Cabin in the Woods
This was a nice little cabin in the woods. It reminded us of a boy/girl scout type cabin. It did have an odd odor to it. I'm not sure if it was a damp smell or a shut in smell. I know this is in the woods, but there were SO many bugs in the house. We watched a light show of lightening bugs as well laid in bed. Our son killed a couple roaches and ran from the big spiders. This could be totally normal but it creeped me out a bit. The couch was cozy and the wifi worked well. The kids had fun with bunk beds. Just an FYI to tall guests, you will hit your head on the ceiling while showering if you are 6'4" or taller. We were excited to see a bear on the way to the cabin and a turkey in the backyard. Thank you!
WHITE OAK CANYON COTTAGE
We Loved the White Oak Canyon Cottage & the entire surrounding area!! The cottage was like home away from home! We would DEFINITELY STAY HERE AGAIN!!!!!
We had an amazing time staying at Bill’s cabin! The place is perfect, close to Shenandoah State Park! It had all the amenities we needed for our trip! The place is peaceful! Bill was very prompt in responding to our questions. We will definitely come back and stay again!
Great Location! Very accommodating people!
if you want to be VERY close to some of the best hikes in Shenandoah National Park, this is a great place. We were able to stroll down the road in our flip flops to cool off in the stream. But be warned: because this cottage is just steps away from a popular trail and swimming hole, there will be lots of traffic around on the weekends (We were there in August). The amount of people trying to park nearby took us by surprise. The evenings are very peaceful though.
The cottage isn't fancy, but it had what we needed. The owner Bill was extremely accommodating--if something was wrong he was more than happy to make it right. Also the neighbor Scott was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. He gave us the impression that we could knock on his door if we needed anything.
Overall this was a very nice place to stay. My family had a great time.
Was happy with the location. White Oak Canyon trail head was just a two minute walk. We also had bears in the backyard every morning....
However there was 4 of us and we only had 2 towels 2 washclothes and 2 hand towels and the phone (landline) did not work the whole stay. This is a problem because there is absolutely no cell service and closest town is 15 miles. The matresses were clean but need replaced on bunkbed. We enjoyed our stay and hopefully Bill can get all these things fixed. He was really helpful but he doesn't live close. Needs to update some things and hire better cleaning service. Bathtub was dirty and floors unmoped. Also yard was unmowed and growing tall. We would rent again because of location. Beautiful scenery.....
Thanks for your feedback. The guests informed us that us the phone was not working. I immediately called the phone company, but unfortunately the first appointment available for a technician to come out to troubleshoot was four days. Our phone is provided for local and emergency purposes only. Also, we have hired a new cleaning service.
Really close to hiking trails, but just ok
Let me say on the positive side; it was as advertised. It was close to the white oak trailhead, which was an amazing hike. It was remote and quiet, and a mama bear and her two cubs loved to eat from the apple tree in the back yard, which my family and I loved watching. Bill even let us check in early, was great at communicating, and it was well-stocked. On the down side, the window air conditioner tried its best, but isn’t strong enough to really keep the place cool; some fans might help. The top bunk was missing, so one of our kids slept on the couch, which was under the air conditioner, so he didn’t really mind. The main bedroom’s mattress really does sag quite considerably. And as the previous reviewer stated, while it seems like it gets surface cleaned, I don’t think its been cleaned well in awhile. There is visible grime, hair and dead bugs in corners, behind faucets, doors and windows. My biggest problem is it had some bugs, and not just the kind that fly in while the door is open. I hesitated leaving this review, but in the end decided I would have appreciated a heads up.
Thanks for your feedback. Our accommodations are small; however the window air conditioner can't keep up on the hotter days. Also, we expect our accommodations to be very clean and have hired a new cleaning service.
