Before we get into how beautiful Tarantula Ranch is let me save you some money. I only do business over the phone so if you will call me instead of emailing me it will save me time( the pain in the rear computer) and you some money on your stay. My numbers are (432)371-2784 or (432)897-4433. Both numbers are land lines and both are hooked up to answering machines, however you must leave your number as i don't have caller I.D....I'm "old school". BIG NEWS!!! Tarantula Ranch has remodeled its detached unit and can now accommodate a group of 8 people. It is now open for guests. If you are only a couple and the large cabin is rented by someone else you can rent the detached cabin as a separate party. The detached cabin has a queen size bed, kitchen, indoor shower and toilet and satellite tv. You will have to telephone me regarding the availability of the detached cabin.NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS!!! I've been informed by vrbo/home away that have been bought out by EXPEDIA. AS A RESULT BEGINNING DECEMBER 4, 2017 I( and all the other property owners) WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO SPEAK WITH YOU OVER THE PHONE UNTIL YOU HAVE PAID FOR YOUR STAY OVER THE INTERNET TO VRBO. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BOOKING TARANTULA RANCH IN THE FUTURE PLEASE SAVE MY PHONE NUMBERS AND I CAN STILL SAVE YOU SOME MONEY ON YOUR STAY REGARDLESS OF HOW LONG IN THE FUTURE. I'LL ALSO BE ADVERTISING ON OTHER SITES AND STARTING MY OWN WEB SITE WHICH WILL BE PHONE RESERVATIONS ONLY AND SAVE YOU SOME MONEY. NOW ABOUT TARANTULA RANCH....Incredible sunrises and sunsets especially in the summer months. Living out in the wilderness sharpens your senses, the wildlife, the smells the sounds. Life at the end of the road. Comfortable and quiet accommodations in the wilderness, Tarantula Ranch is over a hill and two miles away from the nearest paved road. Swafford Road literally dead ends at the gate to our compound. The cottage(casita) is a four room facility, It has one bedroom with a full size bed the other room has a queen size futon and a full size futon. It has a full kitchen with a full size gas range and new full size refrigerator. It also has a microwave, plates, flatware, coffee maker etc. The cottage has been remodeled and has sautillo tile floors, custom cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom, his and her sinks in the bath and the highest rated insulation in the walls and ceiling. The cottage has a porch to the west which is nice to have breakfast on during the warm months although you may have to share with two friendly burros and a horse. They are the worlds biggest beggars. Watch where you step! I'll try and have some carrots in the frig so you can give them a snack, only one carrot each as equines have a delicate digestive system. The cottage has real electricity and water from a well. We have a real septic system that works. We have 220 fenced acres and another 120 acres outside the fence line here at the compound. As a result we have several hikes to great vistas right out your front door. One of my favorites is Jack Eden Mesa. I own the highest peak on Jack Eden and it's nice to sit on top with your 360 degree view where you can see Texas, The Big Bend National Park and Mexico while eating lunch. The guest cottage sleeps six but if you have eight people in your party i have another cabin that sleeps two. It has a queen size bed, its own indoor shower & toilet. This cabin is only ten steps from the large cabin. In addition to property here at the compound Tarantula Ranch llc also has other properties in the area. One in particular is at a lower elevation (warmer) for our winter time sunworshipers. It's common to have 75 to 80 degree days there in the winter. That property also has pictographs both Indian and Spanish. I have a jeep and a 4 wheel drive suburban that i can take people on a tour to my various properties to see how people have lived in the Big Bend from 8000 years to present with a little geology thrown in. You can sign up for that when you make reservations. If you are a golfer, as a member of The Lajatas Country Club, i can save you 20% off your green fee. At the end of a day of playing in the big bend it's nice to kick back with a drink in our hot tub that sits on a cliff facing west, listening for coyotes and looking for shooting stars. We also have an observation deck that hangs out over that same western cliff that the hot tub is on. The big bend has some of the darkest skies in the world. Here at Tarantula Ranch you are an easy drive( by west Texas standards) to all the tourist attractions in the area, the national park, the state park, river rafting outfitters, horseback riding, jeep tours and the Terlingua ghosttown where good food, good drinks, good music and good times are alive and well.

Keywords: remote, spectacular vistas, friendly burros and horse will interact with you, wide open spaces, great sunrises and sunsets. Also since we have real electricity we can offer all the electric appliances you need to make your stay comfortable, refrigerated air conditioning, kitchen appliances, satellite telivision. You will NOT have to walk across a parking lot or drive miles to use the restroom and shower. We have indoor plumbing!!!~ Also we have no traffic since we are more than two miles away from the nearest paved road AND inside a compound. Oh and you don't have to sleep on the ground in a tent (unless you want to).

Great sunsets! Great burros! Great owner!

  • 4 of 5

Curt is such an interesting and genuine person. We really enjoyed our talks with him, and wish we would have had more time to spend doing that. His property is very accurately described. As someone said, "Not the Ritz", but it was certainly comfortable and had everything we needed. The queen bed was very comfortable. Nice big two lavatory bathroom made for easy husband and wife prep every day. Full kitchen. Wi-fi that was good enough to allow us to call family via wi-fi, since we had no cell service there. The "living room/second bedroom" had a TV with satellite service, comfortable recliner, and a couple of not-as-comfortable futons, but we didn't really come there to hang out in the cabin, so we didn't spend a whole lot of time there. We definitely enjoyed our evenings on the porch watching the sun set. We also enjoyed meeting Billy and Maggie, the two most friendly "lap burros" ever. I call them lap burros, because by the second night, it seemed they literally wanted to sit in our laps! An experience we will never forget!! We came to see Big Bend National Park and the dark skies. This location was a little more remote for that purpose than we realized, partly because of the two miles of rugged path that leads from the paved road to the cabin. From the other reviews I read, I guess I didn't realize just how rugged that path is. But don't let that deter you... If you want a place that is remote, but with all the amenities you need, this is a great place. And you will make great new friends in Curt, Billy and Maggie. Stock up at the Cottonwood grocery in Study Butte, and definitely stop and have a drink at the Starlight Theater in Terlingua. They had live music the night we were there, and the food and service was great. This place will make great memories!!!

Remote, Rustic getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was amazing. It was great fun for the adventurous family. My children loved the 2 burros and a horse right outside your door. We got to see a star filled sky with a full moon, that was breath taking as well as the sunsets. Curt has so much knowledge of the area and entertained us as we learned about the area. We loved coming back to our rustic home after a rafting down the Rio Grande or hiking in the Big Bend Park. It was an adventurous trip that was made complete by our host, Curt and his cabin. We will define try stay again, if we are ever in West Texas.

Sunrise to starry night-a fantastic rustic getaway

  • 5 of 5

Hiking and rafting through Big Bend country for the week was fantastic beyond words, but it was truly enhanced by staying at Tarantula Ranch. The first trek up the 2-mile "driveway" is a bit unnerving, but once Curtis greets you at the gate, you know you're in country you can't wait to learn more about. And, Curtis, is a wealth of geology and history lessons for inquiring minds! He proved to be a great "conci-ahrrrge" if you need one, too, finding us a rafting trip through Dark Canyons at the last minute to kickoff our adventure. The cabin had everything we needed and the ranch was a pleasure to hike in itself. It's 30-miles to Study Butte but that's a stone's throw by West Texas standards and driving is part of what we enjoyed in Big Bend anyway. The burros, Maggie and Billie, as well as shy Eileen, made porch-sitting in the evenings entertaining. Maggie proved great at letting us know when animals might be making their way to the runoff pond. Can't wait to experience more of this rocky treasure in Texas, and Tarantula Ranch will surely be a base camp for us again. Thank you for sharing your ranch with us, Curtis.

What a Hoot!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed two weeks at Tarantula Ranch and heard an owl almost every morning. Never ran out of fun things to do. Hiking in Big Bend, row boat crossing into Mexico and a horse ride to town for lunch, Terlingua- ghost town, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Alpine-museum. The ranch was secluded and the cabin rustic. Exactly what we were looking for. The views are awesome, mountains, sky and night stars. Curt is the best host we certainly made a new friend. His rescue animals burros (Billy & Maggie) horse (Eileen) dogs (Jackie, Haagen, & Das) became great friends with us and our Great Dane Mr. Peepers. If you are an animal lover this is the place for you. Thanks Curt for your hospitality we will be back.

Basic Texas Charm

  • 4 of 5

I stayed in the small cabin. It has all the basics you need and Curt is a charming host with a wealth of information about the area. It is a bit of a drive to the entrance of Big Bend park including a couple bumpy miles but it is quiet and has amazing views. One of the highlights for me where the rescued burros that hang out by the cabins. Be sure to bring extra apples and carrots.
