About the property

Panoramic Ocean Views in Exclusive Samara Reefs, 40-ft infinity Pool, Sunsets

Casa Colibri is a 5000 sq ft luxury house located within the Samara Reefs gated community. It is the largest of the 7 homes and was designed with comfort, elegance, and entertaining in mind. With two full master bedroom suites and a total of 5 bedrooms, it is the perfect choice for an extended family or 3 couples looking for a spacious house close to town with a large pool, a large sundeck, and lots of room to relax. Casa Colibri has 5 bedrooms (each with spectacular ocean views), a completely outfitted gourmet kitchen, a 40-foot private saltwater swimming pool, an elegant outdoor dining room, and an over-the-top bbq grill/outdoor kitchen. Throughout the house, natural materials such as local rock, local hardwood, and bamboo accentuate the relaxed tropical ambiance.

Built in 2008, Casa Colibri is one of 7 luxury houses in the Samara Reefs Gated Community in Samara. The houses are situated along a ridge 150 feet above sea level and overlook the horse-shoe shaped beach of Playa Samara. Behind Samara Reefs is a dense green jungle canopy - forests of huge native trees you would expect to find in much more remote sections of the country. Because of its elevated position and a deep green valley located behind the house, Casa Colibri receives both off-shore and on-shore breezes, which help to keep the house feeling fresh and cool. The location is unique - you have stunning ocean views plus the sunrises to the east, AND incredibly beautiful sunsets to the west.

Unlike other luxury developments in the Samara area, Samara Reefs is accessed by paved roads the entire way. And it is located within easy walking distance to Samara Beach and to the town-center of Samara. Grocery stores and restaurants are a 7-minute drive and walking the beach takes approx. 10 minutes. Samara is a funky, friendly little town with many excellent restaurants (including Locanda, Gusto's, and Mama Gui's), dozens of activities (such as surfing with great, and amenities including the very helpful Samara Info Center, 2 banks, 4 grocery stores. A car is not necesary - several of our guests have opted to use taxis and go "car-less".

Casa Colibri Features:

- 2 Master Bdrm Suites, each with a large ensuite bathroom

- 1 King size bedroom (upstairs)

- 1 Queen size bedroom (upstairs)

- 1 Guest bedroom with single bed (main level)

- A gourmet kitchen with European gas cooktop, microwave, wall-oven, and refrigerator/freezer/ice-cube dispenser on door, completely outfitted.

- Highly functional outdoor dining room with seating for 8

- Pool-side covered outdoor grill/kitchen

- A large TV room with a/c, comfortable leather sofa, sliding door opens onto shaded garden.

- The main living room has two banana leaf sofas and round coffee table.

- 4 bathrooms

- A covered roof-top sunset deck

- 1 outdoor bathroom plus 2 outdoor showers

- Your own laundry room with full size washer/dryer

-40-foot SALTWATER infinity edge pool, with jets, lights. Because it is salt-water, very little chlorine is used so there is almost no chlorine odor at all.

Built by Architect Karin Nagel, and local interior designer Julietta Jurado, Casa Colibri is elegant AND extremely functional. The house is very modern and open. The vaulted ceilings and huge foor-to-ceiling windows add to the feeling of spaciousness. The windows and doors are of the highest quality; ceiling fans and well-placed screened windows ensure maximum comfort. Throughout the house, soft colors and natural materials create a comfortable, relaxed feeling. One of its best design features of the house is how the rooms flow seamlessly from one to another - this house has great flow! Large glass patio doors off the living room open up and connect all the main rooms into one large living space: the kitchen, dining room, and living room, the pool, and the pool deck.

The kitchen is the hub in this house. It is extremely well designed, has all-stainless steel appliances, and high quality wooden cabinets. Gourmet chefs will appreciate the gas stove, the large countertops, and the super-functional layout. It is bright and inviting, with windows on all sides and is spacious enough for multiple chefs. On the large kitchen island there is a high-end European 6-burner gas stove, two full length granite countertops, a wall-oven, microwave, and a 4-person sit-up bar. A unique feature of this house is the large walk-in pantry adjacent to the kitchen. This room is air-conditioned and humidity-controlled and is the perfect area to store wine, beer, fruit, vegetables, and dry goods.

The upstairs master bedroom is very large, taking up 1/3 of the top floor. It has a king-size bed, solid almond floors, remote control A/C, a Tommy Bahamas ceiling fan, reading lamps, tons of storage and closet space, a very large bathroom, beautiful frosted glass doors, and a large ocean-front sundeck. You can open up the curtains and enjoy huge panoramic ocean views - right from your bed! The sundeck runs half the length of the top floor and, being on the 2nd floor, you get a spectacular view of the entire Samara Bay AND gorgeous sunrises.

The master bedroom en-suite bathroom is very large. It has 3 windows from which you can enjoy 3 very different, very beautiful views. A large portion of the hillside to the northwest is owned by WingNuts Canopy Tours and is an ecological preserve.

Also having access to the sundeck is the Executive Office. Bring your computer and make yourself comfy. There is an office desk, an office chair and it is a perfect, quiet place to catch up on emails. In the morning, this sundeck is our favourite place to enjoy that first cup of coffee. At that hour in the morning, the birds are singing and the place feels peaceful and intimate. The comfy chairs are perfect for relaxing in for catching the sunrise, with the pastel colors of the sky changing literally before your very eyes. Enjoy seeing the many varieties of songbirds flying around, the hummingbirds, and the sound of howler monkeys off in the distance. Throughout the day, you will see large flocks of parakeets (4:30 pm), butterflies, and every day, dozens of hummingbirds (colibris) dart in and out of the pink-flowered trees below. In front of you are layers: a dense canopy of trees, then sandy Samara Beach, and beyond that, the island called Isla Chora - this is the view that Samara is famous for.

Because Costa Rica is so close to the equator, the sun rises at 6 am and sets at 6 pm year-round. The temperature stays warm in the evenings; there is no need to pack a sweater. The barbecue grill, located at the edge of the sundeck overlooks the canopy below and is so perfect that it has inspired the phrase "Barbecue Envy" from recent guests.

The house has 2 pool-side hammocks, 3 lounge chairs, and is large enough so that, even with 8 people, quiet corners can be found to enjoy a book or have a nap. If someone wants to watch TV without disturbing others, there is a separate air-conditioned TV room.

Adjacent to the house is a unique feature - Samara Reef's amazing waterfall feature. Modeled after our favourite hotspring resort, Tabacon Resort in Arenal, there is a waterfountain with water flowing along a "river". The water falls down over a wall, cascading down into a "jungle pool" below. One of our favourite activities is sitting under this water and getting a great shoulder massage! It is exhilarating and ultra-relaxing. During the hottest hours of the day, do check out the shady grotto behind the waterfall. Note that the water comes on automatically each morning for only a few hours.

Another unique feature of the house is our "sunset deck". This is located on the rooftop of our carport. One day we realized how wonderful the sunset view was - and the views of the surrounding back hillside. So we built some seating and put a string of twinkling lights up. Now this area is one of our favorite evening spots where we regularly enjoy wine and appetizers. By day, it's a quiet spot to do yoga. It's also a great spot for watch troops of monkeys swinging in the jungle on the nearby hillside.

Another surprising feature of this house is the wonderful cross-breezes that flow through the house; off of the ocean, cool breezes flow into the house. At other times, the cool mountain air streams from the hillside behind flows through the front door, keeping the interiors cool and fresh.

But the absolute best feature of the house is the view. Whether you are inside the house, or out, you will find yourself utterly captivated by the stunningly beautiful panoramic ocean views, the rounded shoreline of Samara beach, the small island of Isla Chora, and the protective reefs that appear and disappear with the tide. From the bedroom windows you will have a bird's-eye-view into the surrounding hillsides watch, kayakers heading to Isla Chora, or fishing boats headed out to sea. It is truly a magical place.

About Mary-Ellen Meyers, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

My husband and I built Casa Colibri in 2006-7 and moved in in 2008. We love the tropical sunshine and it is the perfect place escape from the cold Canadian winters. When we ourselves cannot be in Samara, we very much enjoy sharing our piece of paradise with others.

If Casa Colibri is not available for your dates, do check availability at Villa Mirador (vrbo 393786) which is 2 houses away, or ask me about the availability of two other Samara Reefs houses: Casa Centenario or Driftwood House. Also, check out Casa Estiyul (vrbo 553084), our partner's house on the hillside just below Samara Reefs. Pura Vida!

Why Mary-Ellen Meyers, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada chose Sámara

Casa Colibri is an easy walk to Samara Beaches and a short drive to the town-center. Samara has everything you DO want and nothing you DON'T want. It is a small, friendly town with a surprising number of great restaurants, 4 excellent grocery stores, and TONS of activities including hiking, fishing, zip-lining, beach activities, surfing, kayaking, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. In the town-center there is plenty of shopping choices and amenities such as car rental, a dentist, doctor, 2 banks, and some boutique shopping. Also, it is only a 5 minute drive to Playa Carrillo, considered by many (including the Lonely Planet) to be a jewel of Costa Rica: one of the country's most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. We vacationed here with our toddlers (now in their teens) and loved the safety of Samara and the small, friendly town of Samara. Because of the shape of the beaches and the protective offshore reefs, there are no LARGE waves, making these 2 beaches some of the safest swimming beaches in the country. And both win awards for outstanding cleanliness standards. We love having 2 beaches: for body surfing and boogie boarding, we prefer the waves at Carrillo; for people-watching and surfing, Samara is unbeatable. The town of Samara is wonderful: very friendly, relaxed, and even though it is small, it has a surprising number of great restaurants! And there is a huge variety of activities available - it is truly the perfect fit for a family vacation. The locals (who call themselves Ticos) are very friendly, positive, and happy people.

Samara Reefs is a very special location, incredibly beautiful. We feel it surpasses all other developments of its type on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Come share our piece of paradise.

What makes this house unique

The two beaches, Playa Samara and Playa Carrillo, are both fantastic. If you want to sit in a restaurant with your feet in the sand (margarita in hand) and be just feet away from the water, then Samara is the right beach for you. Not only is the choice of restaurants great, but at several of them, you can sit comfortably in the shade watching your kids play in the sand, swim safely in the water, take surfing lessons right in front of you. When the surf lesson is over, they can join you at the restaurant. Perfect! if you like people-watching, Samara has lots of fun restaurants, cafes, bars, and has a very friendly and relaxed "vibe". Samara is made up of local Costa Ricans, Americans, Europeans, has an International Language School, a Registered Massage School, and is home to excellent surfing so the local vibe is diverse, energetic, and LOTS of fun. People-watching at its best!

Playa Carrillo, on the other hand, is completely untouched by development. Palm-lined and pristine, Carrillo has been called "THE PRETTIEST, MOST UNSPOILED BEACH IN ALL OF COSTA RICA" by Lonely Planet.

A HUGE benefit of Casa Colibri is its wonderful caretakers. If you need assistance or help with the house, our Administrator, Daniel Quiros, and his wife Anna live across the street in their nearby casita. They are extremely helpful and will do everything they can to make your vacation even more enjoyable.

From the Liberia Airport, Samara is a 1.5 to 2.0 hour drive. Ask me about arranging private transport from the airport directly to Casa Colibri. Samara has PRIVATE CHEFS for hire as well as MASSAGE THERAPISTS - These services can hired through the Samara Information Center. Unique Features of Casa Colibri: The sunset deck is a great spot for watching sunsets, monkeys in the surrounding trees, and at 4:30 the parakeets come home to the trees in the surrounding hillside. The waterfall next to Casa Colibri is a unique feature and is something you might see in a high-end Hotel & Spa. Just walk down the steps beside the house - go ahead and get wet! The sensation of the water falling on your shoulders is amazing. What a great massage! Also very cool is the grotto BEHIND the waterfall! The walk-in pantry is a great feature! The room is air-conditioned and humidity controlled and is the perfect spot to store vegetables and fruit, and extra beer

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Casa Colibri sits atop a hill overlooking the ocean. When we arrived and walked through the door, the view took our breath away. The home is very clean and well maintained. We were a group of seven - two families with kids ranging from 5-16. We all had our own space but could come together on the patio for drinks and to watch the kids play in the pool. There is a large bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and another bedroom with two beds on the first floor. There is a full bath on the first floor. The second floor has a master bedroom and ensuite bath and two bedrooms with a shared bathroom. The two lower level bedrooms open to the pool deck by sliders.

We loved sitting on the roof top area above the carport at night to watch the sunset. All of the bedrooms were spacious and clean with plenty of closet space. The master was HUGE. The deck off the master was a favorite spot for coffee and yoga in the morning. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed and the cooled pantry kept perishable items cool and dry (we did have a running joke about needing to check supplies in the pantry since it was so cool and refreshing in there!). Any issue we had was rapidly addressed by Daniel (on site) or Mary-Ellen via email. We have used VRBO for many years and have rented a ton of homes from Virgin Gorda to Bend, Oregon and I can honestly say Mary-Ellen is the MOST responsive owner we have ever encountered. Every email was answered promptly and she provided a ton of information to us before we left about restaurants, things to do, etc. Our only suggestion would be to rent a car or ATV's while you are there. The home is up a hill and after a long day at the beach, it is nice to be able to load up and zip up the hill. The walk is certainly doable but with beach towels, toys and kids the ATV's made it easier. We also enjoyed having them to run around town. I would highly recommend Outback rentals for the ATV's. This was our first trip to Costa Rica. We all had a great time and would definitely recommend Casa Colibri.

First, I'd like to say that Mary Ellen was quick to respond with communications and info, so that helped immensely.

Second, first vacation in along time we didn't need a vacation from our vacation. We were all ready to head back to reality. Super chill. Just what we needed! We were easily entertained with large pool rafts, and much animal watching. The monkeys were a hit. We named the iguanas.

We had plenty of room/privacy with a multigenerational family of nine.

Finally, we got to break out our Spanish and enjoy the people we met. The ocean was mesmerizing throughout the day. The caretakers do a great job. The sounds of the canopy were musical. The lush landscaping was a verdant treat. Quite a gem. Look forward to a return trip.

Absolutely Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

This has to be one of the nicest vacation homes we have ever stayed at. Exceeded our expectations, photos simply don't don't do it justice.

This is the 4th vacation home that my wife and I have been involved with renting in 4 years. We noted that, unlike some other places where we have vacationed, Samara was the first location where we felt perfectly safe among the locals. Very friendly people with an overall laid back surfer vibe.

We were a party of 6 people (3 couples), none of which had vacationed in Costa Rica before. We were there from March 2 thru 9 2016. We were not disappointed. From start to finish, this was a great vacation.

This house is fantastic. All the bedrooms have a great view. Master bedroom has its own balcony. The house is huge and the open concept made it feel even bigger. Not once did anyone feel that they were in each other's way or tripping over each other. The professionally designed kitchen is awesome. It is well equipped with whatever one might need for cooking/entertaining and was often a focal point for all 6 of us while meals were being prepared.

Hint - The huge air conditioned walk-in pantry keeps wine at a perfect temperature.

Mary-Ellen was quick with her responses and was helpful with every aspect of the trip. No question went unanswered so we had a high degree of confidence of what to expect even before we arrived. While staying at Casa Colibri, Brenda at the info center was our number one go to person for activities, shuttles, etc. Her knowledge on just about everything in and around Samara (and beyond) is truly amazing.

It is very hot in Costa Rica. Our group found that early morning beach walks were best, before the sun became too intense. We also discovered that between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, it was best to be at the house (just too hot in town ..... unless of course you're at a beach side pub!) enjoying the infinity pool or indulging in a siesta. After 5:00 PM, we would head into town to grocery shop, hunt for souvenirs or visit one of the many beach bars or restaurants.

We did not bother with a rental car. The beach was a short 10 minute walk and the center of town just a few minutes further. If we over indulged while in town or had groceries to bring back to the house or just too tired to walk, taxis were always available.... $5 takes you right to Casa Colibri's front door.

Of all the vacation homes we've had the pleasure of staying at, this is the one place we would not hesitate to return to.

If your looking for a first class home with a breathtaking view and pool, this is your place. We had iguanas suning by the pool everyday thousands of parrots flying in yard along with a steady stream of butterflies passing over the pool all day long Each morning we would go out front to watch the monkeys passing by in the trees you have truly built a paradise in a paradise. Thank you so much for sharing this place with us. I would also like to thank Daniel he is truly a gem sincerely Larry

This house is incredible. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we are already planning our next visit. The views from this home are beyond description. The photos don't do it justice. All the bedrooms have a view so everyone will be happy with their room. There is plenty of privacy in each area of the home so it is perfect for several couples or families. This was a family vacation for us and we often were going in different directions but this home made a great gathering spot. A couple people from our group rarely left the home, it was so comfortable and the house has such a nice open concept. The pool is perfect for lounging. The kitchen is perfect for cooking as a group and the grill is great for all the fresh food in the area. Samara is a relaxed and fun place to visit. It was exactly what we were looking for in a vacation destination. Beautiful beaches, casual restaurants and really nice people. Brenda at the info center is a great resource for activities, car rentals, shuttles, etc. Mary-Ellen was amazing. She was so quick with her responses and was helpful with every aspect of the trip. This was a vacation our family will never forget.

This house is fabulous .... open concept with loads of room for the whole family.

Our family of 5 has rented many different upscale vacation rentals over the years and this without question was our favorite by far... The views of the ocean from every room are amazing, we woke up early every morning to listen and watch the families of howler monkeys around the neighborhood and we really enjoyed all the different wildlife and nature this region of the world has to offer.

Mary-Ellen and Shane were great to deal with ... lots of communication prior to, during and after the trip to answer all of questions and provide us with beneficial insight and information about the house, the gated community and the region around it.

Thanks Mary-Ellen and Shane .... this was our family's favorite vacation :-)

Casa Colibri is a 5 minute drive from two of Costa Rica's very best beaches: Samara and Carrillo. You will find perfect waves for body surfing, boogie boarding, and great waves for beginner and intermediate surfers. You can rent boogie boards for $2/hour, rent bicycles, ride horses on the beach, rent ATV's, kayak through slow-flowing rivers or go ocean-kayaking to the nearby island of Isla Chora, or go diving or deep-sea fishing. Experience world-class zip-lining operated by the fabulous guides at WingNuts. We recommend taking a guided hike through "Samara Trails" with Alvarro, and going ocean-kayaking to the tiny island of Isla Chora. Or go stand-up paddle boarding (during the day or by moonlight) with Chillasana. Kayak slowly through wide rivers and get a great view into the natural jungle off the beaten path. Go snorkeling or diving and see a huge variety of sea life, including colourful fish, turtles, and even lobster. This is a great opportunity to fly in a gyrocopter - great pilot and great rates. Check out Flying Crocodile.

Samara and Carrillo are known for having spectacular deep-sea fishing. (home to the President's Cup Championship). You can go deep-sea fishing for BIG fish - sailfish or marlin, or charter a smaller boat and bring home a tuna and mahi-mahi (dorado) for dinner. Either trip you will see dolphins do their fabulous tricks in their natural habitat. Guaranteed, you will not run out of thrilling and thoroughly enjoyable activities, spectacular sights, and memories that will last a lifetime.
