About the Property
Panoramic Ocean Views in Exclusive Samara Reefs, 40-ft infinity Pool, Sunsets
The Samara Reefs gated community is located on a long ridge overlooking the horse-shoe shaped beach of Samara and 150 feet above sea level. Behind Samara Reefs is a dense green jungle canopy - forests of huge native trees you would expect to find in much more remote sections of the country. Because of its elevated positon and a deep green valley located behind the house, Casa Colibri receives both off-shore and on-shore breezes, which help to keep the house feeling fresh and cool. The elevated, panoramic location allows you to enjoy great beach views, stunning sunrises to the east, AND awesome sunsets to the west. This setting is truly unique. Returning to Casa Colibri, after an exhilarating adventure out on the water or a day lounging at the beach, is a total pleasure.
What sets this house apart from many other luxury houses in the area is its proximity to Samara Beach: Casa Colibri is an easy 10-minute walk to the beach-front and another 7 minutes to the town-center of Samara where there are many excellent restaurants (including Locanda, Gusto's, and Mama Gui's), surf rentals, The Samara Info Center, 2 banks, 4 grocery stores, and many other amenities. Our location is so convenient to town that many of our past guests have opted to just use taxis and go "car-less".
Casa Colibri Features:
- 2 Master Bdrm Suites, each with large bathroom, one with soaker tub
- 1 King size bedroom (upstairs)
- 1 Queen size bedroom (upstairs)

- A covered roof-top sunset deck
- 1 outdoor bathroom, 2 outdoor showers
- Fullsize laundry room with full size washer/dryer
At over 5,000 sq. ft., Casa Colibri is one of the largest homes in the Samara Reefs gated development. Built by Architect Karin Nagel along with designer Julietta Jurado, the house is not only elegant but extremely functional. For instance, the windows and doors are of the highest quality and the well-placed screened windows ensure maximum comfort. From its circular staircase, with its wrought-iron palm leaf design, to the beautiful hardwood kitchen cabinets, each and every element in the house was artistically crafted. Throughout the house, soft colors and natural materials create a comfortable, relaxed feeling. And over-the-top WOW architectural features such as the 30-foot vaulted ceilings and ocean-front floor-to-ceiling windows make this house totally unique and very special. One of its best design features of the house is how the rooms flow seamlessly from one to another - this house has great flow! Double-wide glass doors off the living room open up and connect all the main rooms into one large living area: the kitchen, dining room, and living room, the pool, AND the pool deck all become one perfect living space.
Gourmet chefs will love the kitchen. The lay-out is bright, invitingl, with windows on all sides, and It is fully outfitted. Its contents would meet (or exceed) even a high-end chef's expectations. On the large kitchen island there is a European-imported 6-burner gas stove, two full length granite countertops, a wall-oven, microwave, stainless steel appliance, and a 4-person sit-up bar. A unique feature is the large walk-in pantry adjacent to the kitchen. This room is air-conditioned and humidity-controlled and was designed to store wine, beer, fruit, vegetables, and dry goods.
Another unique feature, perfect for entertaining, is the pass-through counter off the kitchen window - perfect for handing serving platters out to the barbecue chef. Glass patio doors open onto the dining room beside it. Opposite this sliding glass door is another window,: perfect for allowing refreshing cross-breezes to keep the kitchen (and the cook) cool and comfortable. Enjoy picking fresh oregano and basil from the beautiful kitchen garden.
The house is so large with so many good sitting areas to expore that no one will bump into each other. If someone wants to watch TV without disturbing others, there is a separate air-conditioned TV room; it has patio doors that open outside onto a shaded fountain/garden area.
A unique feature is the amazing waterfall feature adjacent to the house. Modeled after our favourite hotspring resort, Tabacon, water flows along a "river", over a wall, and then cascades down. Try sitting under this waterfall - you get a great shoulder massage! It is exhilarating and ultra-relaxing. During the hottest hours of the day, do check out the shady grotto behind the waterfall. The shady nook is guaranteed to cool you down - truly delightful.
Another great spot is the "sunset deck". We built on top of our carport when we realized how wonderful the views were of the surrounding back hillside. And it's high enough to get the VERY best view of the sunset. A string of twinkling lights transforms this area into a great evening spot to enjoy wine and appetizers. Concrete furniture provides plenty of seating. By day, it's a quiet spot to do yoga. Hint: It's also a great spot for watch troops of monkeys swinging in the jungle on the nearby hillside.
Located off the Master bedroom upstairs is a huge sundeck. Both the bedroom and the neighboring Executive Office open onto this deck. The deck runs half the length of the top floor and, being so high up, you get a spectacular view of the entire Samara Bay AND gorgeous sunrises. Bring your computer and make yourself comfy. There is an office desk, an office chair - it is the perfect, quiet spot to catch up on emails. In the morning, this sundeck is a gentle way to wake up with a cup of coffee. It feels peaceful and intimate. The comfy chairs are perfect for relaxing in while enjoying watching the sunrise, with the pastel colors of the sky changing literally before your very eyes. Enjoy the sounds of the many, many songbirds, monkeys off in the distance, and the gentle ocean surf. Visiting the nearby trees are large flocks of parakeets, flocks of butterflies, and every day, dozens of hummingbirds (colibris) dart in and out of the pink-flowered trees below. In front of you are layers: a thick canopy of trees, then sandy Samara Beach, and beyond that, the island called Isla Chora - this is the view Samara is famous for.
When the sun goes down, the temperature is still perfectl (no need to pack a sweater). The barbecue grill, located at the edge of the sundeck overlooks the canopy below and is so perfect that it has inspired the phrase "Barbecue Envy" from recent guests.
At the eastern-most corner of the proper is a curved teak deck where you can stand and look west (for great sunsets) or look down overtop the waterfall feature, the "centerpiece" of Samara Reefs. The water comes on automatically each morning for a few hours.
The house is designed to allow cross-breezes to flow through the house; wonderful ocean breezes flow in off the water and cool mountain air streams through the front door, keeping the interiors cool and fresh. Whether you are inside the house, or out, you will find yourself utterly captivated by the stunningly beautiful panoramic ocean views, the rounded shoreline of Samara beach, the small island of Isla Chora, and the protective reefs that appear and disappear with the tide. From the bedroom windows you will have a bird's-eye-view into the surrounding hillsides watch, kayakers heading to Isla Chora, or fishing boats headed out to sea.
The upstairs master bedroom is very spacious, taking up 1/3 of the top floor. It has a king-size bed, solid almond floors, remote control A/C, a Tommy Bahamas ceiling fan, reading lamps, tons of storage and closet space, a very large bathroom, beautiful frosted glass doors, a tiny balcony overlooking the front of the house, and the large ocean-front sundeck. You can open up the curtains and enjoy huge panoramic ocean views - right from your BED!!
The master bedroom en-suite bathroom is very large and has 3 windows from which you can enjoy 3 very different, very beautiful views. A large portion of the hillside to the northwest is owned by WingNuts Canopy Tours and is an ecological preserve.
To Samara Beach, the walk is 10 minutes. It is not strenuous at all; just walk down our paved road for about 600 meters, cross the street, and then walk 100 meters along a wide, shaded path, and you are at the entrance to the beach. Another 7 minutes and you will be within range of 7 or 8 good restaurants, the Samara Info Center, grocery stores, surf lessons, kayaks departing the shore, boogie board rentals, bike rentals, ATV pick-up spot, etc.
From the Liberia airport, it is a 1.5 hour drive to Casa Colibri. Please feel free to ask me for photos showing Samara, various activities, the walk to Samara Beach. I can also send you an info page onTransportation Options from the airport.

Only 5 minutes away are two of Costa Rica's very best beaches: Samara and Carrillo. You will find perfect waves for body surfing, boogie boarding, Samara is great for beginner and intermediate surfers. There are 3 surf schools in Samara: Pato's, C&C Surfing, and Chillasana Surf & Yoga. "Professional" waves are at a 3rd beach, just 30 minutes away. You can rent boogie boards for $2/hour, rent bicycles, ride horses on the beach, rent ATV's, kayak through slow-flowing rivers or go ocean-kayaking to the nearby island of Isla Chora, or go diving or deep-sea fishing. Casa Colibri is just 10 minutes away from world-class zip-lining operated by the fabulous guides at WingNuts. We recommend taking a guided hike through "Samara Trails" with Alvarro, and going ocean-kayaking to the tiny island of Isla Chora. Or go stand-up paddle boarding (during the day or by moonlight) with Chillasana. Kayak slowly through wide rivers and get a great view into the natural jungle off the beaten path. Go snorkeling or diving and see a huge variety of sea life, including colourful fish, turtles, and even lobster. This is a great opportunity to fly in a gyrocopter - great pilot and great rates. Check out Flying Crocodile. If exploring some National Parks is on your list, Samara is close to 3 of them: Barra Honda, Playa Ostional. and Palo Verde River.
Samara and Carrillo are known for having spectacular deep-sea fishing. (home to the President's Cup Championship). You can go deep-sea fishing for BIG fish - sailfish or marlin, or charter a smaller boat and bring home a tuna and mahi-mahi (dorado) for dinner. Either trip you will see dolphins do their fabulous tricks in their natural habitat. Guaranteed, you will not run out of thrilling and thoroughly enjoyable activities, spectacular sights, and memories that will last a lifetime.

About the owner: Our group of Canadian partners began building the 7 Samara Reefs beach houses in 2006 . Our partners - who live mostly in Vancouver and Toronto - love the tropical sunshine over the cold and rainy Canadian winters. When we ourselves cannot be in Samara, we very much enjoy sharing our piece of paradise with others. If Casa Colibri is not available for your dates, check out Villa Mirador (vrbo 393786) which is 2 houses away, or ask Mary-Ellen about the availability of two other Samara Reefs houses - Casa Centenario or Driftwood House. Also, check out Casa Estiyul (vrbo 553084), our partner's house on the hillside just below Samara Reefs. Pura Vida!
Why the Owner Chose Sámara, Costa Rica:
Casa Colibri is THE perfect location for families or couples traveling together. If you want a spacious house with a big pool, a great kitchen, and gorgeous panoramic ocean views, but also want to be close to great beaches and great restaurants, Samara Reefs is the perfect location. It is within easy walking distance to Samara Beach and a comfortable walk into the town-center of Samara. Also, it is only a 5 minute drive to Playa Carrillo, considered by many (including the Lonely Planet) to be a jewel of Costa Rica: one of the country's most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. We vacationed here with our toddlers (now in their teens) and loved the safety of Samara and the small, friendly town of Samara. Because of the horse-shoe shape of the beaches and the protective offshore reefs, these 2 beaches are some of the safest swimming beaches in the country. And both win awards for outstanding cleanliness standards. For body surfing and boogie boarding, we prefer the waves at Carrillo. For people-watching and surfing, Samara is awesome. The town of Samara is wonderful: very friendly, relaxed, and even though it is small, it has a surprising number of great restaurants! And there is a huge variety of activities available - it is truly the perfect fit for a family vacation. The locals (who call themselves Ticos) are very friendly, positive, and happy people. Besides being close to the beaches and to town, and besides its outstanding panoramic ocean views, its unique position 150 feet up on an elevated ridge gives it fresh tropical breezes! Samara Reefs is a very special location, possibly surpassing all other developments of its type on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
The two beaches, Playa Samara and Playa Carrillo, are fantastic. If you want to sit in a restaurant with your feet in the sand (margarita in hand) and be just yards away from the water, then Samara is the right beach for you. Not only is the choice of restaurants great, but at several of them, you can sit comfortably in the shade watching your kids play in the sand, swim safely in the water, take surfing lessons right in front of you. When the surf lesson is over, they can join you at the restaurant. Perfect! if you like people-watching, Samara has lots of fun restaurants, cafes, bars, and has a very friendly and relaxed "vibe". Samara is made up of local Costa Ricans, Americans, Europeans, has an International Language School, a Registered Massage School, and is home to excellent surfing so the local vibe is diverse, energetic, and LOTS of fun. People-watching at its best! Playa Carrillo, on the other hand, is completely untouched by development. Palm-lined and pristine, Carrillo has been called "THE PRETTIEST, MOST UNSPOILED BEACH IN ALL OF COSTA RICA" by Lonely Planet. A HUGE benefit of Casa Colibri is its wonderful caretakers. If you need assistance or help with the house, our Administrator, Daniel Quiros, and his wife Anna live across the street in their nearby casita. They are extremely helpful and will do everything they can to make your vacation even more enjoyable.
