Overview

About the property

Historic Home, 6 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 12-16)

John W. Maynard constructed this center-entry side gabled brick house in 1844. At the time the home was in the middle of a large, undeveloped block. Catherine Street did not extend between Division and State Streets until 1898. Maynard was a successful grocer with a store on Ann Street and his brother, William, was the city's most successful land developers during his time and the Mayor of Ann Arbor in the mid 1800s. Maynard street in Ann Arbor still bears their family's name as they were some of the early settlers of Ann Arbor. John and William Maynard were also responsible for donating land they personally owned in order for Ann Arbor to win the bid as the future location of the University of Michigan.

In the 173 year life of this home it has served as student centers, a church, and the home to many of Ann Arbor's finest residents.

Today the exterior of the home still has the most charm of any home in Ann Arbor but in 2006 it was meticulously restored and no expense was spared. The home has a viking range, sub zero fridge, wine bar, huge wrap around porch, patio, kohler fixtures, surround sound throughout the house, and much more. Probably the best feature of the home is that it is absolutely in the heart of Ann Arbor and within walking distance to anything and everything.

The house has recently served as a temporary residence for Neve Campbell, Hillary Swank, and other celebrities which should also indicate that it's one of the best in Ann Arbor.

The set up for the beds in the home is 2 bedrooms with king sized beds, 2 bedrooms with queens, 1 bedroom with a full, a full sized pull out couch, and 2 twin beds in a newly remodeled attic. There is also plenty of floor space for air mattresses if need be.

Although the home is already beautiful we have projects and refining done throughout the year to make it better and better. Without a doubt this is the best home to rent in the Ann Arbor area.

Beautiful house with great location and gathering space for large groups!

  • 5 of 5

Our third time staying at this beautiful house. Our group enjoys the wraparound porch, family room with huge TV, great location for campus, town, and stadium. Highly recommmed. Only issue is the cost.

Great House

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time planning our family reunion around a UM football game. The house was large, immaculate, and perfectly located for seeing the sights in Ann Arbor. Unlike many rental places, there was nary a whiff of mold anywhere in the house, not even the large basement. The house is close to many bars and restaurants (2 blocks to Zingermann's), but not too close as to hear all the noise. The huge porch with rocking chairs was perfect for hanging out. David was great in showing us the house and talking a bit of its history when we checked in. I'll surely be back.

Lovely home

Great stay at a beautiful house- large and well-appointed. It was perfect for our large family reunion, and the kids had a blast with the upstairs kid's room. Owner was very nice and available.

Maynard House made our Big Chill weekend

  • 5 of 5

When planning a special Ann Arbor weekend for my 25th undergrad reunion, as well as my husband's 20 B-School reunion, I came across this house on VBRO and thought it might be a great place to gather. The house was immaculate and very comfortably slept 11 of us. While we did flip for the two basement bedrooms, the bathroom on that level is very nice and no one felt shorted. The house was perfectly located for every weekend activity - Main St, Zingerman's, Angelo's and Michigan stadium all a short walk away. We were constantly gathered in the well appointed kitchen, comfortable LR and in front of the enormous TV to watch the Cub's win the playoffs. One of the best memories of the weekend -- our group photo on the front lawn reenacting the Big Chill movie poster. We are already plotting our return in 5 years and friends who were enamored of Maynard House have hinted that they will try to poach this house. Not on our watch!!! Thank you for making the booking easy and the stay such a pleasure. The house really was central to a memorable weekend.

Graduation!

  • 5 of 5

David:

My wife and I would like to thank you for your hospitality. Your house created an exceptional atmosphere for us to enjoy our son's commissioning into the United States Navy and Graduation from The University of Michigan. This is without a doubt the best VRBO property in all of Ann Arbor. Your location is ideal for shopping and dining. The house is everything you advertise it to be. Any large family with a son or daughter graduating from Michigan would be remiss if they didn't consider reserving your house for their special occasion. Again, thank you! We will cherish the memories from our very special weekend at your home.

All the best.

More than the comforts of home in a perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our experience was stellar. The property exceeded our expectations. It was meticulously cleaned and the layout was ideal. Despite the location on a well traveled street, our rooms were peaceful and quiet. One unforeseen bonus was the home's Sonos system.

"Good customer service" does not begin to describe the owner David. He was always prompt and reassuring when communicating via email, and he graciously met us at the house upon arrival despite the late time. His friendly demeanor enhanced our visit.

The house is located only a couple of blocks from Kerrytown. It is also an easy walk to both Central Campus and Main Street. We enjoy Sava's for breakfast and my vegan daughter loves The Blue Nile for dinner. I have an affection for the Kelsey Museum, whose exhibits are world class.

I highly recommend this property and look forward to returning to it one day soon.

Thank you David for making our visit to Ann Arbor a success.
