From Vineyard Style Magazine: 'Colin Whyte, President of Martha's Vineyard Construction, left his happy childhood home near Biscayne Bay, FL to start a wonderful and varied journey that would one day lead him to sailboat summers, Martha’s Vineyard mansions and a company built from fortitude and perseverance. “I had enough support and stability at home that I could just go. I never knew that when I left home at age 16, I’d never be back again.” Choosing to go to an all boys boarding school in Tennessee, McCallie School taught hard lessons of discipline and survival. It was there that Colin made life-long friends and began to desire the mysteries that life and experience had to offer. In hope of avoiding a sojourn in Vietnam Colin took off on his motorcycle, partnered with friends, and threw himself into education and small-time enterprises. Self-taught, he learned how to run a successful business from varied jaunts including: house moving, dictionary selling, surfboard renting, interning in the Senate, and—finally, construction clean up. Graduating from Brown University with a liberal arts degree led him to a winter at Law School, and a stint back at Brown Graduate School in art. “Applying to schools, I was really just a kid trying to stay out of Vietnam; little did I know, it was the motorcycle that would save me. A serious accident taught me the power of the motorcycle. My back was handed a lesson and Martha’s Vineyard became my home.”'
Colin purchased this House in 1992

A truly special spot
We just returned home from spending the Thanksgiving holiday at Turtle Pond. This home is spectacular!! The owners were very hospitable and clearly take the time to make sure that no detail is overlooked. If you are looking for a private, beautiful, cozy, extraordinary place to rent, look no further!! We were sad to leave this slice of paradise and look forward to returning!!
Fantastic! Spectacular grounds. Awesome house for two families
Gorgeous property close to Lampert's cove beach. The house is really well stocked with tons of beach towels/chairs and kitchen extras (like condiments). Lots of common spaces on both floors making it wonderful for two families to share. Rent this place!!!
Ain't no MV virgin no more! 😎😎
Since our wedding day nearly 34 years ago I've been promising friends "I'm coming next year." I didn't know what I was missing. MARTHA'S VINEYARD is truly a magical place with an unmistakeable, unique, feel good energy and vibrant history that has attracted legions of vacationers for decades. I now understand why. We stayed in West Tisbury (15-20 min from Oak Bluffs & Edgartown) on this 16 acre slice of paradise in this most incredibly comfortable, warm and inviting home and guest house. These great photos still don't do justice to its charming splendor. The owner Colin has exquisite taste and meticulously maintains the house and manicured grounds. Mani, Bodhi, Dede and our guest loved it immensely. Ahhhhhhh, what a week of BOV (Bison on the Vineyard) camaraderie, peace, fun, food and recharging.
I strongly recommend staying at TURTLE POND on your next visit!
AMAZING stay at Turtle Pond
I do not know where to begin about our stay at Turtle Pond. We were a group of 8 mid - late 30s adults (2 couples and 4 singles) and the accommodations were beyond perfect for/during our stay. Colin met us at check-in time and gave us a tour of the house and the grounds. The house is extremely spacious and well decorated. The size and layout of the house allows people to have privacy when they want/need it as well as many options for group socializing. None of us thought the pictures did the house any justice as the rooms are more spacious than they appear on the website. The house was extremely clean and felt like a home. The kitchen is well stocked with any utensil you may need for both indoor and outdoor cooking. The beds were comfortable and the bed linens as well as the towels are of high quality. The house is approximately 20-25 mins from downtown Oak Bluffs, South Beach, Menemsha, Edgartown, the airport, and about 10-12 mins from vineyard haven (a good number of minutes of the driving time is spent getting from the house to the main road). Cab service to and from the house was not an issue. A plus was the nearby farm that offers farm fresh eggs for $5!
Colin met us at check-in and gave us a tour of the house/grounds. He made sure that we had everything we needed and when an issue popped up he responded and fixed it ASAP. If my friends and I decide to return to the vineyard next year we will definitely book this house again!
Beautiful Home, great property, minutes drive from the beach
The house is ideally set up, starting with a spacious kitchen with two ovens and an eat in alcove. The kitchen can be closed off with a dutch door -this was clutch for corralling the youngsters. There are several living areas in the house which meant that for our group of 11 adults and 2 (young) kids the house never felt crowded.
Colin did a fantastic job showing us the property and went above and beyond throughout the week with all of our questions. I would recommend this place for any families trying to relax .
