About Bruce Batten
Vista Country Home is located on Fiddler's Green, a working farm in the gorgeous rolling hills of Maryland countryside that has been in our family for 5 generations. Owner/managers are siblings Bruce, Chris and Mary Batten, who grew up playing in these creeks and fields, riding horses, milking cows, bailing hay, etc. Bruce's wife, Toni, and Chris' wife, Melissa are essential parts of our family team. Here, where Big Pipe Creek joins Bear Branch on our property, we would wander the banks where Civil War soldiers camped the day before the battle that shaped the history of our nation. It was here we gained our appreciation of history, and the sacrifices made by our ancestors for the blessings that we enjoy today. Chris and wife Melissa are the on-site managers who lives in the ante-bellum farmhouse nearby. Bruce and Mary divide their time between Vista and Fiddlers Green, and their other residences in Alaska.
Bruce Batten purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1946
Why Bruce Batten chose Taneytown
Our family built Vista Country Home, designed by the award-winning, Registered Landscape Architect Chris Batten, on our family farm known as Fiddler's Green in 1990. It was originally built for and home to US Navy Capt. (ret.) Hugh N. Batten, a WWII fighter ace, and his wife Mary Thomas 'Tommy' Batten. Both are now deceased. This location has been a family farm for some 200 years, and looks much the same as it did 150 years ago during the Civil War, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland numerous times. Scores of battles large and small raged within short distances from this farm. Tens of thousands of soldiers marched through these fields, or camped along Pipe Creek, which runs through this property, on their way to destiny at Gettysburg. Its proximity to Gettysburg, Antietam, and other National Parks and battle grounds makes it an ideal home base for day trips to some of the world's finest battlefield visitors centers, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Baltimore and Washington D.C. But in addition to its location in a America's historic heartland, Vista is situated among some of America's most charming countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms. We wanted to share this magical place with people who love history and this country's agarian roots.

The home was perfect!
The home and property were very nice and provided a comfy open space for our group of 7 and a dog. We loved the fireplace. The owner was very responsive and timely. Very very comfortable, peaceful and clean. We hope to come back!
Vista did not disappoint!
Our family (four adults and two dogs) spent 5 nights at Vista and completely enjoyed ourselves. The house was large, very comfortable, and furnished with all the amenities needed to make the stay enjoyable. The surroundings were beautiful and secluded; we particularly enjoyed watching the birds during the day and the clear view of the stars at night.
A gem of a property with incredible managers/owners.
If I could give the above rating six stars, I would! Our stay was to be one of adventure and reconnecting with family who live nearby. Adventure as we were flying in from CA and staying at Vista and planned on entertaining a small group of family on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and additionally, cooking Thanksgiving dinner the next evening.
Melissa and Chris were so kind and were flexible with our late check in we flew in from the west coast. Melissa is a person whom you meet and you feel as though you've known her for years. She graciously showed us around the place, made sure we knew how to work the fireplace and TV's and made sure we were comfortable.
The kitchen at the Vista was perfect for cooking and the dining room and Living rooms were perfect for entertaining! The kitchen is well stocked and has everything!
The property itself is beautiful, full of nature, and feels remote, however, Taneytown and Westminster are minutes away.
We were able to reconnect with family and friends, enjoy our holiday and rest and relax all in the span of 4 days! In a word it was unforgettable. We will return for sure.
House for our band
We are members of the Chicago Fire Dept Pipes & Drums, in town for the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial.
This house was amazing. Big rooms and very comfortable throughout. All the major appliances worked well and the bedding & towels were really nice.
The scenery is beautiful and there are windows and decks & patios all over to see it, plus the patio & deck are great for people to gather. The trails around the property are pretty cool and involve the creek that also flows through.
The property is like being on an isolated farm, but then it's literally only 10min to grocery stores, pharmacies, Dunkin Donuts, gas stations, etc. Truly the best of both worlds.
The owners were very courteous, quick to answer inquiries and eager to help. The onsite people were just as quick and helpful.
We absolutely loved our stay.
Wonderful experience...gracious and inviting
