About Bruce Batten
Vista Country Home is located on Fiddler's Green, a working farm that has been in our family for 5 generations. Owner/managers are siblings Bruce, Chris and Mary Batten, who grew up playing in these creeks and fields, riding horses, milking cows, bailing hay, etc. Bruce's wife, Toni, and Chris' wife, Melissa are essential parts of our family team. Here, where Big Pipe Creek joins Bear Branch on our property, we would wander the banks where Civil War soldiers camped the day before the battle that shaped the history of our nation. It was here we gained our appreciation of history, and the sacrifices made by our ancestors for the blessings that we enjoy today. Chris and wife Melissa are the on-site managers who lives in the ante-bellum farmhouse nearby. Bruce and Mary divide their time between Vista and Fiddlers Green, and their other residences in Alaska.
Bruce Batten purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1946
Why Bruce Batten chose Taneytown
Our family built Vista Country Home, designed by the award-winning, Registered Landscape Architect Chris Batten, on our family farm known as Fiddler's Green in 1990. It was originally built for and home to US Navy Capt. (ret.) Hugh N. Batten, a WWII fighter ace, and his wife 'Tommy' Batten. Both are now deceased. This location has been a family farm for some 200 years, and looks much the same as it did 150 years ago during the Civil War, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland numerous times. Scores of battles large and small raged within short distances from this farm. Tens of thousands of soldiers marched through these fields, or camped along Pipe Creek, which runs through this property, on their way to destiny at Gettysburg. Its proximity to Gettysburg, Antietam, and other National Parks and battle grounds makes it an ideal home base for day trips to some of the world's finest battlefield visitors centers, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Baltimore and Washington D.C. But in addition to its location in a America's historic heartland, Vista is situated among some of America's most charming countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms. We wanted to share this magical place with people who love history and this country's agarian roots.

Nice New Years getaway
We were looking for a nice quiet getaway over New Years weekend, and this place did not disappoint. There were 4 of us (two couples) including our dogs, which was more than enough room. The walking trails around the property were great especially with the dogs, and the proximity to Liberty Mountain provided a great day of skiing. There stores, shops and restaurants all close by which was convenient. The heating did go out one night, however the owners came by immediately after we called them with space heaters, and even gave us money for our inconvenience. And a short while later, a contractor came and fixed the heating, so the quick accommodations were greatly appreciated. Great place with warm and friendly owners!
Beautiful, serene escape near Gettysburg
My husband and I, our two kids and their three cousins spent two wonderful nights at Vista. The setting is nothing short of idyllic and the house itself is simply lovely. We had everything we could possibly need and more. From the time of first booking through to the end of our stay, the Battens were quick to respond to e-mails, answer questions and were extremely personable and welcoming! We came during the winter and made a visit to Gettysburg and went snow tubing nearby. I would love to return in the spring or summer. It truly is a unique and beautiful property In close proximity to Gettysburg. Thank you Bruce and Chris!
Perfect Country Getaway
Our family had a wonderful Thanksgiving stay at the Vista house. It is situated on a large family farm and feels quite secluded, even though you are 5 minutes from a grocery store, gas station, restaurants and convenience stores. The owners were extremely friendly and accommodating and helped make the stay special for our family. As noted by a prior guest, the kitchen was stocked and organized. The tv reception was not the best, but it was not an issue for us. There is plenty of outdoor space and the owners showed us the various trails that you could walk/run. The farm also had a "tent city" next to the river where the kids could play in a place house and the family could have an outdoor fire. It is a wonderful property with great owners. We hope to return in the near future and would highly recommend.
Wonderful country getaway - great for families!
We loved everything about a Vista - the birds, the deer, the fireflies, the butterflies, the bunnies...and the fact that it was close to everything we needed, but secluded and away from busy roads! The balcony, gazebo and lawns were perfect for meals and gazing at the stars. The creeks were fun to play in, and tranquil to relax by. And our daughter is enamoured with the farm dogs, barn cats and goats at the family farmstead just over the hill. The house was great for our three generation gathering. We made wonderful family memories here!
absolutely beautiful, and very private. i would come back again !
I would definitely consider renting again .Owners were very friendly, House was very clean, for nine retired executives on a annual motor cycle trip, it worked out perfectly. Close to York Pa. , Close to Gettysburg , and the beautiful mountains, it does not get any better! Only recommendation would be to have a few more cots available.
After 48 perfect 5-star reviews, we are thrilled to get another great review for Vista Country Home--this from the largest group of men (nine) who have ever asked to stay at Vista.
Our goal is for EVERY guest who comes to Vista to have a quality experience, including sleeping on our luxurious bedding. We want every guest to know exactly what we offer in terms of bedding BEFORE BOOKING, so the website is clear on what the bedding set up is. Vista is a "boutique" estate home, with only 3 bedrooms. We have bedding for up to nine people, but that maximum number assumes some guests (couples? children?) will have to share double/queen beds.
I explained in detail and in person the bedding arrangements to these guests before they booked Vista. I was reluctant to accept the booking for so many adults, but I relented when the guest personally insisted the sleeping arrangements for nine men would be acceptable to them all.
In response to the friendly suggestion that we should offer cots: We do not and will not offer our valued guests bedding in cots, which we would consider below the standard of bedding we strive to maintain for Vista Country Home. There are lots of other nice lodging options in the area with more bedrooms and more beds and cots.
Better than expected!
Absolutely loved our stay at Vista house! The privacy was great but very convenient to Gettysburg and Washington DC. We were treated like family upon our arrival and felt very welcome. I would highly recommend this home! My plans are to return again someday.
