With Vista as your vacation base, you can EASILY DRIVE TO DOZENS OF HISTORIC SITES and some of the world's finest visitor's centers to experience history where it happened, and honor those who fought and died to make America the great nation it is today.

A mere 15-minute drive will take you to Gettysburg--to where Chamberlain stood moments before he led a bayonet charge down the slopes of Little Round Top; to Cemetery Ridge, where the rebel yell still echoes from Pickett's Confederates as they charged to the 'high water mark' of the war; to the Gettysburg Cemetery, where Lincoln delivered the most famous speech in history honoring those who gave 'the last full measure.'

Vista offers easy access to many of America's other most important historical sites, as well, including Antietam and Monocacy Battlefields, as well as cultural and recreational sites in and around Washington DC and Baltimore, home of our national anthem!

After a day of sightseeing, golf, or ANTIQUES SHOPPING in the MANY OF THE EXCELLENT ANTIQUE SHOPS very closeby, you can kick back at Vista. Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine from under Vista's gazebo as steaks sizzle on the grill, and a red setting sun yields the dimming cornfields and sycamore trees to a constellation of sparkling fireflies. Keep comfortably in mind that Vista Country Home is at the center of our ALL ORGANIC, NO-SPRAY, NO PESTICIDES, FULLY ORGANIC working farm, Fiddlers Green, which has been in our family for 75 years!

Or, enjoy the Maryland traditional celebratory feast: a pot of blue crabs from Vince's Seafood, steaming in savory Old Bay seasoning, with cold bottle of delicious locally crafted beer, or a chilled glass of fresh apple cider from nearby Baugher's Orchard.

Prefer to dine out? Vista is only 3 miles from Taneytown, where you can find WORLD-CLASS DINING at the Smokehouse Restaurant, named by USA Today BEST READERS’ CHOICE WINNER FOR BEST HOTEL RESTAURANT in 2020. This fabulous restaurant of the delux country hotel, ANTRIM 1844 an elegant ante-bellum mansion. At the other end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut and other familiar eateries are nearby and offer faster food alternatives. Check out Taneytown's charming Country Kitchen for old style delicious country breakfasts and crab cakes.

The larger, but still nearby towns of Gettysburg and Westminster boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget.

For a quiet evening at your Country Home, enjoy a movie or documentary from a large collection of Civil War DVDs and other movie options on a large HD TV.

For a quieter evening, curl up with one of the many books in the Vista library of Civil War and American fiction and history books and periodicals.

Vista also offers you FREE WiFi for HIGH-SPEED INTERNET access with UNLIMITED data. Use it to look up your Civil War ancestors, check your email, or tell your Facebook friends what a great time you are having!

Thank you very much for another wonderful vacation for my family. Excellent place with the patio our favorite "hang out". My daughters treated me to a very nice 80th birthday celebration here in such a beautiful location. I want to thank Chris and Melissa for their hospitality and helpfulness.

Property managers eager to please; gardens beautiful
Even though there was a snafu with my reservation dates, Chris and Melissa were boots on the ground to make sure my family had a pleasant experience. They had a unique approach to dogs and furniture (i.e. Use sheets provided to cover any furniture that a dog may prefer to snuggle with his/her owner) - what a terrific idea and that should be shared with other VRBO owners! With the amount of gardens around the house, I was surprised there wasn't a grounds crew to take care of it as it is beautifully laid out. The various products used in the house for cleanliness had me asking about them as they smelled lovely - and I will be buying some for my own use at home. This VRBO home is definitely a keeper!

Vista is Wonderful
Our party of 7 stayed at Vista for a week to take in Gettysburg, Ft. McHenry, the aquarium, some Orioles baseball and so much more. Vista was centrally located to all the activities we had planned and was such a wonderful and peaceful place to come “home” to at the end of the each day. The hosts were welcoming and the communication was great throughout our stay. We were welcomed with fresh cut flowers when we arrived and the house was clean. We even made friends with Hopper (the owners dog) and my daughter was sad we didn’t get a chance to say goodbye when we left. Loved the house and would definitely recommend. We would stay again if we make it back out.

This is our second visit to this property and we are planning to return next year. Vista is so peaceful. A good place to hear your thoughts and prayers. This place is very clean and well maintained. I didn’t need any guidance but if I did I know the property owners would have been right there. My daughter and her husband, my husband, George (our beagle) and I love this place.

Nice people and beautiful property
The house was very nice and clean, the property was beautiful and the owners…extremely nice! There is however, a lot of bugs in that house, beetles and crickets. Unfortunately, we didn’t sleep very well. I know it’s a country home, but we have one too and really don’t have that problem. It’s possible doors were left open by other guests.

In the country.
Beautiful private setting. Long gravel drive in, and probably better if you have a big SUV or Truck with a crew cab . We have a Suburban and took it to the Sheetz car wash daily. The home has room to spread out and relax or entertain. Nice trails on the property for hiking or long paved drive from the gravel lane to the house for walking. Very good civil war library on the premises. Kitchen is well stocked with everything you need and good basic appliances. Beds were comfortable and opening the windows at night made for great sleep. The owners were very nice, and available if needed, but not meddlesome. Beautiful fresh flowers on the dining room table when we arrived. It was exactly what we needed to have a mini-family reunion. We will re-book this property the next time we go to Westminster.

This is a very beautiful home and property. The favorite spot for my two adult daughters and me was outside on the marvelous patio and under a very nice pavilion. Kitchen was well-supplied with cooking pots, pans, and utensils. Very comfortable living room. Nice bird feeder attracts lots of birds. Large dining room was not used for much eating because almost all our meals outside under the pavilion. The hosts were very helpful with checking in and answering any questions. We were very pleased with our experience there and would like to return if out schedules match.

The Most Relaxing Vacation We've Had
This was one of the most enjoyable vacations we've had. The setting was very peaceful and a bird lover's delight. We enjoyed walking the trails, exploring nearby towns, and our trip to Gettysburg. The home itself was very clean and relaxing. The hosts were very friendly, and we especially enjoyed our visits from the informal ambassador, Hopper, the farm's entertaining dog. It was really interesting watching the farm equipment used out on the field as well. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we've already discussed coming back to rent again with family members that were unable to join us this time. Thank you once again to Melissa & Chris! Family Rest With Gettysburg Action
From our friendly Doggie Escort, Hopper, and the personal "Welcome" sign along the long, winding road to Vista, we were made to feel special by the Owners. The lovely home and surrounding gardens and patio were breathtaking. A calming koi pond, colorful plants, bird feeders and a variety of feathered friends, a barbecue and fire pit added so much to our enjoyment. The home was very tastefully designed and decorated, with a special emphasis on American history, especially Gettysburg. We wanted for nothing because special care was taken to provide everything needed for our 3-night stay. Simply put, our stay at Vista was perfect and we will be back.

A-MAZ-ING!!
The property was perfect…I wish I had the right words to say how beautiful it was! First, the property owners went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Melissa called a few days before our trip to make sure we had everything we needed to cook Christmas dinner there for our family. Chris came by and helped us with the bird feeder and told us more about the history of the property. The birds were fascinating to watch during the day and the fireplace kept us cozy in the evenings. It was far enough away from everything to give the sense of being secluded, yet close enough (about 10 minutes) from restaurants and shopping. We will definitely book this property again!

To say that the name Vista is perfect for this property is an understatement. The views from every room are stunning. The house was clean, spacious, and exquisitely private. The outdoor deck, and patio were equally marvelous. The location was perfect for day trips to Gettysburg, and Antietam. Don't forget to bring your dog, they will love the wide open spaces and walking trail.

About the host

Hosted by Bruce Batten

Host profile image
Vista Country Home is located on Fiddler's Green, our working farm producing organic hay, grains, herbs and honey in the gorgeous rolling hills of Maryland countryside that has been in our family for 5 generations--This year celebrating 75 years of Family Ownership! Owner/managers are siblings Bruce, Chris and Mary Batten, who grew up playing in these creeks and fields, riding horses, milking cows, bailing hay, etc. Bruce's wife, Toni, and Chris' wife, Melissa are essential parts of our family team.

Here, where Big Pipe Creek joins Bear Branch on our property, we would wander the banks where Civil War soldiers camped the day before the battle that shaped the history of our nation. It was here we gained our appreciation of history, our service members and veterans, and the sacrifices made by our ancestors for the blessings that we enjoy today.

Chris and wife Melissa are the on-site managers who live in the ante-bellum farmhouse nearby. Bruce and Mary divide their time between Vista and Fiddlers Green, and their other residences in Alaska.

Why they chose this property

Our family built Vista Country Home, designed by the award-winning, Registered Landscape Architect Chris Batten, on our family farm known as Fiddler's Green in 1990. It was originally built for and home to US Navy Capt. (ret.) Hugh N. Batten, a WWII fighter ace, and his wife, Navy veteran Mary Thomas 'Tommy' Batten. Both are now deceased.

This location with its ancient barn and ante-bellum farmhouse has been a family farm for some 200 years, and looks much the same as it did 150 years ago during the Civil War, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland numerous times. Scores of battles large and small raged within short distances from this farm. Tens of thousands of soldiers marched through these fields, or camped along Pipe Creek, which runs through our property, on their way to destiny at Gettysburg. (History buffs will know that Gen. Meade, Union Army commander, had planned to fight the Battle of Gettysburg HERE, along our creek, on the his Pipe Creek Line!) Its proximity to Gettysburg, Antietam, and other National Parks and battle grounds makes it an ideal home base for day trips to some of the world's finest battlefield visitors centers, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Baltimore and Washington D.C.

But in addition to its location in a America's historic heartland, Vista is situated among some of America's most charming countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms. We wanted to share this magical place with people who love history and this country's agrarian roots.

What makes this property unique

--Plenty of space, indoors and outside with spectacular gardens and spectacular views: hundreds of acres of your private estate!
--Gorgeous gas-fired fireplace in living room--romantic & cozy inside when it's chilly outside!
--More than 2 miles of PRIVATE trails for hiking, biking, jogging, X-C skiing, through pristine rolling countryside and woodlands, along streams.
--Modern comforts of Central AC, 2 HD-TVs, DVDs, WiFi, games table, books.
--TWO outdoor patio areas, both ideal for al fresco dining, with raised lily pond, BBQ pavilion, hacienda-style walled-in garden, lots of outdoor seating in sunshine or the shade of magnificent oaks, maples, and dozens of ornamental flowering plants and trees.
--CLOSE (less than 3 miles) to great businesses & services, including supermarkets, restaurants, liquor stores, recreation--even two 'Dollar' stores. Also, a fabulous, large antiques mall--one of Maryland's largest!
--Easy access for day trips to Gettysburg, Antietam, Baltimore, Washington, and many of America's finest visitor destinations!
