About Bruce Batten

Vista Country Home is located on Fiddler's Green, a working farm that has been in our family for 5 generations. Owner/managers are siblings Bruce, Chris and Mary Batten, who grew up playing in these creeks and fields, riding horses, milking cows, bailing hay, etc. Bruce's wife, Toni, and Chris' wife, Melissa are essential parts of our family team.

Here, where Big Pipe Creek joins Bear Branch on our property, we would wander the banks where Civil War soldiers camped the day before the battle that shaped the history of our nation. It was here we gained our appreciation of history, and the sacrifices made by our ancestors for the blessings that we enjoy today.

Chris and wife Melissa are the on-site managers who lives in the ante-bellum farmhouse nearby. Bruce and Mary divide their time between Vista and Fiddlers Green, and their other residences in Alaska.

Bruce Batten purchased this chateau / country house in 1946

Why Bruce Batten chose Maryland

Our family built Vista Country Home, designed by the award-winning, Registered Landscape Architect Chris Batten, on our family farm known as Fiddler's Green in 1990. It was originally built for and home to US Navy Capt. (ret.) Hugh N. Batten, a WWII fighter ace, and his wife 'Tommy' Batten. Both are now deceased.

This location has been a family farm for some 200 years, and looks much the same as it did 150 years ago during the Civil War, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland numerous times. Scores of battles large and small raged within short distances from this farm. Tens of thousands of soldiers marched through these fields, or camped along Pipe Creek, which runs through this property, on their way to destiny at Gettysburg. Its proximity to Gettysburg, Antietam, and other National Parks and battle grounds makes it an ideal home base for day trips to some of the world's finest battlefield visitors centers, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Baltimore and Washington D.C.

But in addition to its location in a America's historic heartland, Vista is situated among some of America's most charming countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms. We wanted to share this magical place with people who love history and this country's agarian roots.

Better than expected!

Absolutely loved our stay at Vista house! The privacy was great but very convenient to Gettysburg and Washington DC. We were treated like family upon our arrival and felt very welcome. I would highly recommend this home! My plans are to return again someday.

Home Away From Home in Taneytown

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this home is perfect. Vista is quiet and secluded but easy to get to Gettysburg, Baltimore and even DC, if desired. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and happy. The master suite was roomy and beautifully appointed. If you have trouble sleeping in the morning due to the sunrise, I would advise getting a sleep mask because there is a skylight in the roof and no way to block out the light. It was not a problem for me. The windows are easy to open from inside and allowed nice cool breezes to blow through even in June. The kitchen could not be better stocked or organized. I loved all the labels inside the cabinets so that you knew where everything went when it was time to empty the dishwasher. The dining room and living room are huge. We had a dinner the first night for 10 and the owners put in a table extension to fit our group as well as putting fresh flowers in a vase on the table for a centerpiece of sunflowers. We called Vista our farmhouse. I'm a nature lover and the view was beautiful. We saw two deers, Chipmunks, and many, many birds due to plenty of birdfeeders and seed that were provided. We were lucky enough to have a nest of baby birds in a wren nesting hat that is attached to the wall on the back porch. What a joy to hear them chirping every morning when mom would bring them their breakfast. There is a back patio off the dining room for a peaceful breakfast in the morning and there's a wonderfully large patio in front of the house with a barbecue for grilling. There is plenty of open space in the yard area and we were able to throw a football around in between all our activities. My family was so glad I found this house instead of putting us up at a hotel. We had five adults and plenty of room to roam. My 90-year-old father visited the first night for the big dinner event and was very comfortable. He uses a walker and had no problems navigating the house, but did not go downstairs. We had a video presentation with a USB drive to show my dad and the owner came down from his house at night to help us get everything working correctly. Everything was a great success, mostly due to the owner's generosity and cooperation. This house is about 15 minutes from my dad's retirement village in Westminster and I will most likely stay here whenever I'm in town. I would highly recommend staying at Vista for a single person or a large group.

We had the pleasure of staying at Vista for 3 nights. The house and setting were beautiful and the accommodations were so outstanding that even the the dreary weather did not dampen our fun and enjoyment.Every one of our needs were met. The completeness of the kitchen was phenomenal!! The sleeping quarters, dining room and living room were just picture perfect. The courtyard and patio were so beautifully laid out! While at Vista, you feel nature and it is just a short jaunt to historical sites. Only had time, due to weather, to walk part of the trail...beautiful! Our hosts were so accommodating with our needs. I felt like a welcome guest of the family, not a renter. Will return again. Eileen & Family

Fantastic family retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Exceeded our expectations! Melissa & Bruce have made sure that Vista feels like home away from home. Spacious, clean, inviting - just beautiful! Every detail for our Christmas stay was perfect, from the lights outside to the decorated Christmas tree and beautiful poinsettias inside, nothing was missed! We hosted two big dinners, and everything we needed was in the well appointed kitchen. Twelve people sat easily around the expandable dining room table. That same number fit comfortably in the family room, for games and opening presents. The master bedroom overlooks fields and trees, facing the eastern sky. We were lucky to be greeted twice by beautiful sunrises. The skylight allowed for stargazing, while laying in bed at night. The one morning it rained, the skylight accentuated the peaceful sound of the drops, lulling us back to sleep. Our daughters shared the second bedroom, on the main level, with the same eastern view. Both slept comfortably and soundly. My brother and his two daughters shared the downstairs area, which accommodates six, so the three of them were able to spread out and enjoy the space. The three full bathrooms were a huge plus, with seven of us trying to get ready in the morning, as well as for our large gatherings. We took full advantage of the outdoor space. There are hiking trails around the 100+ acres on which the house sits. Since the weather was so nice, we hiked around the property, enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells. We saw deer, on multiple occasions, and many varieties of birds. We spent some time at the barn, petting the kittens and goats - the younger kids really enjoyed that. All in all, this was one of the best VRBO experiences we've had. From planning to arrival to departure, we couldn't have asked for more. We've already decided that we want to make this an annual stay! Highly recommend it! Five stars!

Vista Country Home - A Piece of Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

We were welcomed on the driveway with a "Welcome Denise & Family" sign, then greeted at the house by Melissa (owner). She had fresh flowers on the dining room table, showed us all the ins and outs of the house. The grounds were very beautiful and well maintained. The walking trail in the woods was just as described and the little extras were great! There were member cards for the local grocery stores, brochures on surrounding attractions, restaurant menus, Gettysburg driving tapes of the battlefields. Immaculately clean! Not a dustbunny to be found. The cable/satellite was recently disconnected and antenna installed. We had a problem getting more than 2 channels in and called Chris and Melissa and Chris came out and fixed it right away even though it was a dark and windy evening. The only things we needed to buy or bring was our personal food. It was a very centralized location. 30 minutes from Gettysburg, 60 minutes from Hershey and Lancaster PA. I would highly recommend this property to anyone interested as we will be keeping their number for future bookings.
