We welcome your inquiries and would be glad to answer any questions you have before booking. At any point you can book online instantly, if the property is available. Please be sure to read the material that appears below and also the rental agreement so that you will know what this property provides (and doesn't) and what obligations it entails. The goal, of course, is to get a good match between what your group wants and whatever house you end up renting.
This house is on the former estate of John Raskob, builder of the Empire State Building. The house is one of seven that Raskob built in the 1920s for his farm employees. Now it has its own swimming pool and dock fronting on Grove Creek, with access to the Chester River and Chesapeake Bay. The house is centrally air-conditioned and centrally heated. It occupies a very private one-acre lot, and across the narrow private road is another acre suitable for games that you might want to bring with you, such as badminton, volleyball, softball, croquet, and the like.
Here is some miscellaneous information:
Please plug your dates into the calendar box at right to view the actual rate, rather than the "avg/night" that VRBO/HomeAway calculates and that is largely meaningless because it sometimes conflates the rates for different seasons and lengths of stay. During the off-season, there is typically a discount for week-long rentals.
To see the photo captions that provide a little incidental information, you have to enlarge the photos to fullscreen format.
Instant booking enables you to reserve the property immediately, and in that case the quoted price is payable via credit card when the reservation is made. If you are booking many months ahead of time, however, you may prefer to inquire about payment in two installments, the first when the reservation is made and the second ten weeks ahead of time.
Check-in time is 3:00 p.m. and check-out time is 10:00 a.m., unless different arrangements are made. If you are a new renter, we will meet you at the house when you first arrive to familiarize you with the property.
House occupancy is limited to eight people unless different arrangements are made.
The cancellation policy is as follows: you get a 100 percent refund if you cancel not fewer than 60 days beforehand. This refund deadline protects us, and renters in turn can protect themselves by buying optional cancellation insurance through the VRBO/HomeAway booking process.
Although fine for two children, the smallest bedroom with a single bed and roll-out trundle is very tight for two adults. When the trundle is rolled out, there is little floorspace left.
Sheets, bath towels, and pool towels are provided without additional charge. Pillows, blankets, and sheets are left stacked on the beds—i.e., we don't make up the beds as in a hotel. We also supply paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, dish and dishwasher soap, laundry detergent, garbage bags, and firewood for the firepit and fireplace. We do not supply charcoal for the grill. Renters should bring their own pool floats and toys.
You may want to bring appropriate lifejackets for canoeing. We have a miscellaneous collection of lifejackets, but much better is to have lifejackets purchased for the specific individuals who will wear them. After all, children and adults come in a wide variety of sizes, and a good fit is important for comfort and safety.
There is limitless free WiFi for use with your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or other devices.
We receive high definition television via Direct TV, with many channels. Using your own account, you can stream Netflix and similar services to our TV through Roku—but we depend on you to know how to do this, because we are clueless. And you can also, of course, stream to your own devices.
There is a free telephone landline that you are welcome to use. For talking or texting via cellphone, the property is near the borderline of service (1-2 bars depending on your phone and network provider), so you might have to go to the sun porch to get an adequate signal. Or you may prefer to use the landline or to talk and text online. As just mentioned, for anything to do with the Internet, including video-chatting, social media, email, and various voice apps or WiFi voice capability built into your phone, there is limitless WiFi and excellent reception throughout the house.
The swimming pool is unheated, so the water temperature depends entirely on the weather before and during your period. From early June to late August, the water temperature is usually in the range of 75-85 degrees. Before and after this period, the water temperature can be chilly or even downright cold. The main way to enjoy the pool in May and September is to be active—to swim and play, as opposed to lounging in the water. If you contemplate renting during the first half of May or the second half of September, please check with us to learn whether the pool will be open.
The nearest town is Centreville, the seat of Queen Anne's County. It is a 12-minute drive from the house and has two large modern supermarkets and several restaurants. The Kent Narrows, site of a half-dozen seafood restaurants overlooking the water, is a 20-minute drive.
The two sailboats in one of the pictures are not for rent.
Again, we would be glad to answer any questions you might have.
