Lorgues, quiet, intimate, yet close to wineries and so many sites in Provence. This is a small, hill village dating from 1100's with an outstanding Provencal market and great restaurants. The main street is shaded by Plane trees with small shops and local cafes that invite one to linger over wine and coffee and croissants watching the world go by.

The house is at the top of the village on a cul de sac that is less than a 3 minute walk from the main street. Somewhere in its 900 year old history it was a barn, but before that recent research indicates it was the residence of local monks associated with Saint Martins Parish. Its medieval lineage shows in the stone fleur de lys carving indicating it is one of the town's oldest dwellings.

Today it is a lovely 1500 sq. foot house on two floors. The remodeling was done 5 years ago by a local designer and the house has both a cozy and spacious feel. It has the most beautiful kitchen. If you want to try your hand at cooking some of the delicacies from the local markets, this is the house for you. WE hardly ever really cook, but often enjoy eating dinner at home after a day exploring the hill towns or at the coast or the golf course, and it's wonderful to prepare our purchases in such an ambiance... or on hot days take a simple dinner to the patio and contemplate the 1000 year old town wall adjacent to the courtyard.

The ground floor of the house has a living room with seating for 6, a fireplace, English and French language TV, stereo. The kitchen includes an excellent new 5 burner stove, frig, freezer, dishwasher, micro, coffee maker and all pots, pans, plates and glasses necessary. The dining room table seats 6 to 8, and gives onto a courtyard through large glass doors.

On the second floor the master bedroom is very large and light with tall ceilings, a skylight, and windows that open onto the courtyard. The air conditioner in the master bedroom keeps things comfortable in hot weather, but the house is stone and keeps cool itself as it is shaded during the hottest part of the day. There is a large bath with tadlakt finishes like those used on the palaces of Morocco. There is a large tub and shower wand, heated towel rack and a closet with washer, dryer, iron, etc. Hair dryers are included. This bedroom has its own study with desk, lounge chair and internet and computer hooked to the internet. Just turn it on and get your email.

The second bedroom is of good size with comfortable double bed, closet and separate bath with sink and walk in shower. There is a separate toilet room.

The stairway leading to the 2nd floor is modern with an unguarded open side making it dangerous for small children. For this reason and the high quality of some of the furniture, the house is not suitable for small children.

There is parking, when available, in the courtyard next door. If not, in one of 2 town lots a block away.

About Gail Reid

Bill and I live in northern California on 25 acres with our 5 sheep, 4 chickens, a small vineyard and our beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Buck. Bill was a banker and I was a French teacher at a local high school. 5 years ago, after retirement, we bought an apartment in Paris. But, marvelous as Paris is, we missed small town life. Last year we found the house of our dreams on the internet and sold Paris and bought this dreamy house in Lorgues. We spend 3 months a year in France, mostly in the spring and fall. We have furnished it with the wonderful things we bought for the Paris apartment. We hope those who rent it will love and treasure our things as we do. In France we love to shop, go to wineries, explore the hill towns, go to Aix shopping for antiques, go the Nice or Antibes for lunch or photograph the uniqueness of the area. And we love the people in Lorgues, their warmth and welcoming ways.

Gail Reid purchased this Townhome in 2011

Why Gail Reid chose Le Thoronet

These colorful hill villages like Lorgues are a thousand years old. They are south facing, warm in the winter and cooler in the summer than the coast. They are much less crowded in July and August than the coastal beaches, but still are in close proximity to the glories of the Cote D'Azur. We can have the easy access and warmth of a small village with the glamour of the great colorful towns of Provence an easy hours drive. Lorgues is a 15 minute drive from the train station at Les Arc that serves the TGV from Paris and Nice. It is also very close to theA 8 auto route to Nice and Italy to the East and Aix, Marseille and Lyon to the West. The Gorge of the Verdun is 45 minutes north.

What makes this Townhome unique

So many wonderful places to visit in the area yet such a tranquil ambiance!

A Beautifully Restored Stone Townhouse with Excellent Kitchen equipped with top Grade Appliances

                                                            Philip S.

The VRBO description of this lovely stone Townhouse in the Medieval section of a delightful small Provencal Town is totally accurate. Due to its excellent restoration, the House stands out from its Neighbors in a quietly elegant manner. inside, it becomes immediately apparent that the Interior had been gutted; the lovely, honey colored Stone Walls preserved and a modern 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath Maisonette with an unusually large Modern Kitchen with top grade Appliances custom built. One of the many outstanding features of this House are the use of skylights which wash the Interior with Natural Light by day and, by night, via a clever use of lighting and transparent ceilings in the Guest Bedroom Toilet and Shower Rooms, the Stairwell Wall and Living Room are bathed with Light. The presence of a Shower in the Guest Room is a nice Plus for Americans accustomed to Showers rather than Baths. The large Bath in the beautifully tiled Master Bedroom Bathroom offers a good, hot soak after a days touring. The House is also equipped with excellent TV and Wi-Fi for visitors traveling with Lap Tops and 'Smart' Phones that can use Wi-Fi in lieu of a Service Provider, so calls anywhere could be free!

The Kitchen is a 'Cooks Kitchen' equipped with top grade German Appliances, including 2 under counter 'roll out' Cabinet Style Refrigerator capacious drawers and an adjacent under counter Freezer. The 5 Burner Range could easily handle every kind of Menu from a Thanksgiving Turkey to a simple Morning French Omelette. The House is about a 5-10 minute easy walk through narrow Medieval streets to the literal Center of Town where one can find almost every type of Restaurant, Brasserie, Cafe, Boulangerie (Bakery), Marche de Viande (meat), 'Casino' (well equipped Convenience Store), ATMs, etc.

The only difficulty, as is the case in every such Medieval Town, close -in Parking can be hard to find, but, happily, there are two Parking Areas for the Residents within an easy 5 minute walk.

We plan to go back for a re-visit as soon as Time permits.

In Sum, a remarkably fine, comfortable, well designed and equipped French Home (away from 'Home')! Highly recommended.

My husband and I and two friends spent a wonderful week in this Lorgues village home this September. It is walking distance to town and is very well appointed. The kitchen is large and has everything for serious cooks. The bedrooms are also large and the additional toilet was appreciated (in addition to the two full baths). Gail Reid sent us a detailed documents suggesting things to do and see and we did most of them. We also visited a number of vineyards where we tasted delicious wines. I would recommend this VRBO to anyone who wants to visit this part of Provence and wants all the comforts of home.

Centrally located Var property perfect for exploring

                                                            Katie M.

We visited Lorgues in August with our 2 kids, ages 11 and 9. We were looking forward to getting a "locals" experience in the country after spending a week in big cities. Our expectations were far exceeded!! First, Bill & Gail's house is immaculate! With so much attention to detail, the house is beautifully decorated paying homage to its locale. For a family of four, we had plenty of room. The house is much larger than the photos portray. The house is fully equipped so we were in need of nothing other than some groceries. Lorgues is a full service town with a small convenience store, a few restaurants and the requisite patisserie/boulangerie all within a very short walk from the house. In addition, the town hosts a massive market once a week that offers everything you can imagine from the best French produce, meats & seafood to your unexpected need for a new pair of sandals! The best surprise of our stay in Lorgues was the town's proximity to so many other places to visit. We spent one day driving north to the Gorges du Verdon where we spent the day swimming in the river and touring the gorge in a pedal boat. Another day we drove south to the Riviera and spent a day enjoying the sea on a sandy beach. A third day we explored the surrounding towns by parking the car nearby and getting lost walking the tiny little streets. But these days of wandering did not overshadow our days of just being in Lorgues and enjoying the quiet little town and Bill & Gail's comfortable home. We left lots of details of our week long trip in the guest book so if you visit, take note of those recommendations. We hope we can come back to visit again soon!

Beautiful home, so many attractive small towns, & lovely countryside in the south of France

                                                            BarbaraNew Hampshire, USA

My husband and I had a wonderful two-week visit to Lorgues and the Reid house at 3 rue du Paty. The house is beautiful: the exterior is a handsome High Medieval stone building, the interior recently renovated and artfully decorated, and there is a lovely private garden terrace off the dining room. When we travel, we like coming home at the end of a long day to our own home base, to relax with some wine and make our own dinner with food we bought at the market – roasted chicken, baguette, olives, gorgeous salad greens, and the freshest chevre cheese. We had a dessert contest on several nights, each selecting a different tart or cake or cookie at one of the 3 bakeries in Lorgues. The ultimate winner was the tart frambois cassis at Aux Delices (also the best croissant for breakfast).

Most days we picked out a town to drive to and explore: one day Tourtour with a wonderful view of the valley and fine shops; the next day to Aups, charming; north to Lake St. Croix, breathtakingly blue with a sandy beach/kayaks then the small mountain town of Moustiers Sainte Marie, wandering between the medieval buildings and lunch at a shaded outdoor café; to Aix en Provence, a busier town, tea by the central fountain La Rotonde and walked the Cours Mirabeau, a wide boulevard with refined French architecture (much of it designed by Louis XIV); south to the Thoronet Abbey built by Cisternian monks circa 1175, impressive, a highlight for us; and a long day to St. Maxime on the Mediterranean (a beautiful drive/highway), took the shuttle boat to St. Tropez, admired the yachts of the rich and famous and had lunch in a quiet outdoor café on a back street.

The best part was simply living in Lorgues. We grew accustomed to walking down the steep hill to the main street and shops and cafes to partake of town life (for a leisurely tea and coffee at 4 p.m., buy croissant, or buy a few things at the little Casino store) then climb back up the hill to home. The local restaurants in Lorgues are quite good. The pizza is excellent. The market in Lorgues every Tuesday morning is fantastic and fun -- the main street lined with vendors under tents: a vegetable stand, fruit stand, then olives, cheeses, bread and pastries, saucisson and chickens, beautiful clothes, hats and on and on. A delightful feast for the eyes and senses! It was a splendid two weeks living, indeed, in a very different place and culture that appreciates and accentuates beauty and simple pleasures.

                                                            Comfortable house, good location

                                                            IanSonoma county, California, USA

We rented this beautiful house with another couple (close friends) and had a wonderfull time. The house is very suitable for 2 couples or a family. The kitchen is lovely, one of our party wanted to cook while in France so she was very pleased with the kitchen and all the equipment. The rooms have plenty of space and the furniture is comfortable. Even though most of the houses are in very close proximity because the town is so old, the locals are very quiet and generally you would not know that everyone is so close. It's a tight squeeze if you decide to park next to the house, but parking in a local square is just a short walk away so it is not a problem. The streets of the town are suitable for a horse so are either a snug fit for driving or you walk. A bit of a hill between the center of town and the house so I would not recommend walking if you have any disabilities (we have none in our party). The main street has most things that you need for daily life and a good selection of restaurants and cafes. The owners will give renters a list of items in the house and a list of restaurants, all the ones we tried were very good, places to see and go to, market days and sights to visit. A great document which we used and referred to all the time, really helpful. Wineries are nearby for a visit, a 13th century Abbey was very interesting all the small hill towns with wonderful restaurants and a train ride to St. Tropez. Lots to do.

We definitely would recommend this property. We all hated to leave.

                                                            Owner's Response:

Thank you so much Ian. We love our town too. Everyone seems so happy in our house and this makes us so glad to share it.

                                                            Great house, town, and region!

My husband and I had a wonderful time in this house in Lorgues. It was very spacious and beautifully decorated. The kitchen is amazing! We loved the town of Lorgues - it seemed very real - not touristy. Try the pizza at Le Main de la Pate (sp?) on "pizza street". The local convenience store, Le Petit Casino, was very good for wine and cheese, and the bakeries were great. We drove to Gorges du Verdon (a MUST), to St. Maxime (parking at Elephant Beach very easy on a Friday, with free beach, showers, bathrooms), then took the ferry to St. Tropez, which was very nice for walking around, getting ice cream. Also, driving around some of the hill towns was wonderful. La Garde-Freinet and Salernes were beautiful! Lorgues is a great location for driving around the Var. Wineries and olive oil mills abound. Great time!

Lorgues has a fabulous Provencal market weekly and is in the heart of the wine country, surrounded by vineyards, local farmers markets and olive groves. It is half way between Nice and Aix en Provence and a half hours drive to the coastal towns of the St. Martine and the ferry to St. Tropez.
