Recline on the cool wrap-around deck and watch toucans, sloths and blue butterflys in the one acre private tropical garden of Casa Bella.

This newly built house combines the comforts of western living with the ease of the Carribean indoor/outdoor style. Tropical hardwoods, beautiful design and modern amenities make Casa Bella an ideal destination.

From the large wrap around deck you pass through an airy and bright living room into the spacious modern kitchen, with its full-sized fridge, stove/oven and double sink. The kitchen comes equipped with cookware and dishware.

There are two bedrooms with queen sized beds, private ensuite bathrooms with hot water showers, fans, lots of shelving for hanging/storing clothing and luggage, and a safe.

Up the external spiral staircase from the deck is a breezy loft apartment that can be rented with the main floor to accommodate 2-4 more people. At the top of the stairs is a wide balcony where you can sit back and take in the canopy view. Inside is an open living area with queen-sized bed, kitchen, dining area, safe, fan, closet and three piece bathroom. There are two single beds, if your group is more than 6 people.

A tropical sanctuary, the lot at Casa Bella has friut trees, flowering bushes, palm trees, ylang-ylang, open spaces and shady zones. We often have howler monkeys and sloths visiting, and if you look up you can catch a parrot or toucan party in our trees.

The house is on both municipal and well water systems. Water is abundant and clean.

There is parking for up to 3 cars at the rear of the house.

From the lot is a 3 minute walk to the public access path to Playa Chiquita Beach, rated the best beach on this side! The path is another 2 minute walk down to the beach. Playa Chiquita Beach is sheltered by an off-shore reef making it a kid-friendly place to swim. With series of sandy coves you can splash and swim, or wade and wallow in the coral fringed pools that decorate the points.

Centrally located in Playa Chiquita Village, near groceries and restaurants, Casa Bella is tucked away in its private spot a mere 1 minute walk from the main road.

We are on site and happy to help you find what you need in Playa Chiquita. We are very approachable and full of local knowledge.

Playa Chiquita is minutes from Puerto Viejo, Limon. This area is an off-the-tracks surfing destination in winter months, and snorkeling and diving in the summer. People come here all year round to view wildlife and experience the Caribbean culture through music and the colourful character of the region.

Another reason to visit? Food!!!

Food is the best reason to come here! From Puerto Viejo, through Cocles Beach, Playa Chiquita to Manzanillo you can savour local Caribbean delights and world-class cuisine. Italian, Argentinian, French, Thai, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Indian, Jamaican...the flavours abound. People are coming to experience the best eating in Costa Rica, and some of the best eating in the world! (see owner profile for some of my 'best of').

About Erinn Bell

We are from Canada where my husband is a carpenter/contractor. We have combined the endurance of Canadian building standards with the beauty of local tropical hardwoods and other artistic touches to create a house that is suited to the Carribean, comfortable, bright and clean. This project has brought us to Costa Rica for the past 9 winters and we have fallen in love with the place.

One of the main reasons we've stayed is the food. Foodies of the world should be put on notice, this is a destination for all who love to eat! Some of my favourite meals: Chicken tacos (2x1 Tuesdays) and a super cold cerveza at Tasty Waves Cantina, Ceviche from Marisqueria Mopri, Falafel Pita from Pita Bonita, Asian Buffet Night at Chili Rojo's, Tenderloin in Green Peppercorn Sauce from Pura Gula, Prawn and Papaya salad from Jungle Love, Cappuccino and Banana Chocolate muffin from Caribbean's Coffee House, and anything on the menu from Bread and Chocolate. That's just the international flavour...the local cusine you can experience at sodas like Selvin's , Tamara's, Miss Lidia's is phenomenal. Try a whole grilled red snapper with all the fixin's, chicken is caribbean sauce, or 'rondon' seafood soup. Wash it down with a mojito or a pinacolada and you'll know you're in paradise.

Erinn Bell purchased this house in 2006

Why Erinn Bell chose Cahuita

Playa Chiquita is a special place. International flavour blends here with an established local population to create a funky and colourful community - and it is a real community of friendly and creative people.

For us the beach is a real draw. Playa Chiquita beach is sheltered by an off-shore reef making it a kid-friendly place to swim. From a series of sandy coves to the coral fringed pools that decorate the points you have your choice: swim, snorkle, wade or wallow.

We like to walk the long lonely stretches of beach from here at Playa Chiquita to Manzanillo (2 hours), ending the day with a legendary seafood platter at Maxi's Restaurant.

When I first saw our lot I knew we'd hit the jackpot. Tall trees, lime trees, clusters of flowers and sunny open spaces make an ideal spot for birds, sloths and butterflies to drift, fly or hang about.

I feel most at home when I'm lounging on the deck, drinking my mojito with limes fresh from my trees and eating fresh cut salsa with wild cilantro picked from my own yard.

What makes this house unique

With 8 restaurants/cafes, a grocery store, clothing store, massage spa, martial arts studio, yoga centre, Wednesday farmers market, chocolate art cafe and bakery a flip flop away, Playa Chiquita is a small but vibrant village.

Lately we've become addicted to the cappuccinos at Punto Y Pasta. It's a fantastic place to hang out and watch the people flip flop or coast by on their bikes. The lemon cake is awesome. For dinner we've been spending a lot of time at DIWO. Ivan is such a great guy, and the food and drink are fantastic.

The road from here to Manzanillo (14km round trip) is so peaceful in the morning that we often go for runs, heading out before 7:30 so that we rarely even see a car. Boot camp or marathon training would be great goals to strive for here. The warm air keeps you loose and limber.

If you want external motivation for fitness there are yoga classes, kick-boxing, and a professional personal trainer and martial arts instructor all happy to add you to their clientelle. Then you can end your day with a massage at Body and Mind Spa. We have it all on this little half-kilometre stretch of road!

Jungle oasis

  • 5 of 5

We had 8 relaxing nights at Erinn and Darren's property in Playa Chiquita. The main building has high quality construction and a modern, open design. The new pool really sets this place apart. We had some in our group who never wanted to leave to go to the beach because it was so easy to settle in around the pool all day. You hear the howler monkeys every morning, and see agouti in the yard. After the first couple days we saw the monkeys nearly every remaining day, as well as toucans and a sloth. The flowering plants all over the property attract constant hummingbirds.

The kitchen is large and functional, and each bedroom had a nice bathroom. The water in this area is high in calcium which does cause some troubles for plumbing so it's good to be prepared for minor water issues, but that would occur any place in the region. The showers had plenty of hot water. Standard sunscreen does turn white clothing and sheets a shade of orange so do try to find the mineral-based sunscreens they recommend.

The owners are from Canada, extremely friendly, and a constant source of information and advice on options for the area. After exploring Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo, Playa Chiquita was the best location along the stretch for our family group with little kids. The home is set back and a bit removed from the main strip which is nice for privacy. Playa Chiquita has a few good restaurants and a great little grocery. It seems to be an area with quite a few ex-pats and caters to tourists well. The beach is a bit of a walk but it is the prettiest section of coastline we saw in the area, with nearshore reefs that offer some protection for children playing in the water, make for a more visually interesting shoreline, provide close to shore snorkeling if the water isn't too rough, and a few nice surf point breaks if there are swells. Most days started calm and glassy, and got windy and wavey in the afternoon.

The house is open air with screens which I loved and helped with the sense of really being in the jungle, but for our November trip it was hot. And there will be some insects.

Overall we loved the place and didn't see anything else as nice in the area during our time, particularly considering the pool. Thumbs up.

Owner's Response: We enjoyed your families visit, and loved seeing how much enjoyment and use you got out of the pool. It is certainly easier to swim here on the property than take the five minute walk to the beach...although I was glad you were keen to hit the beach most days, and even do some SUP-ing and snorkeling! I agree, Playa Chiquita beach is the prettiest since it is more private and has lots of options. Our new coffee maker is easier to clean so I think the calcium problem is resolved, but we still have the french presses and Costa Rican pour-over coffee makers as back up...or for groups who need a lot of coffee right away! I agree it's nice to keep the windows and doors open so you can be closer to the jungle, and with the fans on the air circulates nicely. My in-laws are here right now and they love sitting in the shade by the pool with the fans on low. Best way to keep cool when the sun's out! Glad you guys got to see so many animals. That sloth is still hanging around in the viney tree most days. And we have toucans nesting next door right now. Breakfast in the jungle is like a proper nature show! Hope to see you all down here again some day!

Extended stay with family from Canada

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Bella for the month of January. Our family of 5 (3 kids aged 10, 7 &2)stayed in the ground floor of the main house and we had extended family join us in the other living areas. This was such a great way to have a family reunion as we all had privacy but could see the others when we wanted to.

The indoor/outdoor area is perfect and spacious, it's a great place to enjoy the sounds of the jungle.

The walk to the beach is easy and convenient. The beach is fantastic, Erinn helped by letting us know where the safest place was for the kids to swim.

While in Costa Rica we took a couple of trips to Boca Del Toro and then to Arenal. Both trips were amazing and I highly recommend them. Casa Bella was a great home base to be able to come back to. We really enjoyed the area and everyone was really friendly and helpful. Puerto Viejo is fairly touristy but in a laid back more bohemian way. We rented bikes and this was a great way to get around.

Erinn & Darren were so helpful and informative. We weren't initially sure about how we'd feel about having the owners live on the property, but this turned out to be so convenient for us. When we had an issue with the internet, Erinn addressed it promptly. They are very knowledgeable about the area and had great recommendations for things to do and restaurants to go to. We went surfing with Herschel - loved it! Taco Tuesdays at Tasty Waves, very yummy. And it was very helpful to be connected with drivers - we used Rigoberto frequently and he was great.

Going to Costa Rica for a month was our first big family adventure and it couldn't have been more amazing. I know that we made amazing and lasting memories for all of us.

Owner's Response: It was fantastic to have your family here for a whole month! It's always nice when guests really have a chance to get to know our community. I love biking around, too. And it's fun to be able to go into Puerto Viejo and check out the restaurants and music and shops, then come back to our quiet little village and chill. Hope to see you guys again soon! Perhaps you'll come back to take a splash in our new pool!!! PS...the upgrade in our internet service is complete! We now have the best/fastest available!

At home in the jungle

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 8 nights with our 3 kids (5, 3, 1 yrs.) in this beautiful house in the middle of the jungle and felt so much at home. We used only the ground floor of the main house which was spacious enough for the 5 of us. Thanks to the handy sliding doors you can almost completely open up the living room towards the terrace, creating a huge wooden platform... and the floor is just great to walk on! Both inside and outside are perfectly equipped with comfy chairs, couches and hammocks... and then you´re out there in the jungle! 360° of wildlife around you, only a few steps set back by a beautifully maintained garden.

The property is set back from the main road far enough to offer tranquility and making us feel completely safe, and still everything is close by: good restaurants (the best dinner during our 4 weeks in Costa Rica was at Pura Gula!), a well stocked supermarket and a nice beach can all be reached by foot. You don´t necessarily need a car, most people get around riding bikes, but we enjoyed having our car... it´s defintely easier with kids and also helps to spontaneously decide on what/where to eat (highly recommended for chefs: fresh fish from the pescaderia in Puerto Viejo!) or which beach to go to (our favourite: Punta Uva).

The owners provide an extensive set of information when confirming the booking (regarding the house, POI, restaurants, and so on), and continued to be just as helpful during our stay. They live on the other end of the property and were always happy to assist in case we needed something.

After one week in the central valley / Arenal area and two weeks on the Pacific Coast, we were not sure where to stay on the Carribean side (Cahuita? Puerto Viejo? ...). For us, Casa Bella with its surroundings was the perfect spot! Puerto Viejo is very vibrant, but also touristy and it can be a bit messy... okay for a dinner, but then we were happy to return back to our retreat :-)

I´ll never forget the early morning hours with groups of howler monkeys fighting for the "I´m-the-loudest"-trophy, innumerable singing birds, the first rays of sun coming through the giant trees, hummingbirds, agoutis and sloths stopping by... and me just smiling out of one the hammock chairs with a cup of fresh coffee in my hand :-))))

New Year's Eve at Casa Bella

  • 5 of 5

There were 10 of us total that stayed from 12/27 - 1/5. 8 in Casa Bella (main house) with 2 in the Casita. Our objective was to be dropped in to the day-to-day life of Playa Chiquita and that is exactly what happened (w/a little TLC).

Erinn scheduled transportation for the entire group (which was the way to go) and stops on the way - including a wonderful place to eat and that was our first taste of food yet to come! We arrived at the property about 9:30 and were welcomed with open arms, a home cooked meal (Erinn - you are great!) and a stocked refrigerator. The place was spectacular and we were in the jungle!

The houses were great! I was a bit hesitant about the 'hardness' of the mattress but slept soundly every night! No need for many blankets given the night time temperature and there were fans if you wanted to use them. The kitchen was stocked well enough for us to cook for our group with no problem. We had a starter pack of coffee, plenty of water and other items to get us on our way! I did take some spices from home and would suggest that just so you don't have the expense of purchasing them. Most time was spent on the very large deck playing cards, laughing and just having plain fun! Our hosts were even able to come play with us! There was plenty of seating, hammocks and room for work outs.

Everything needed was provided: tons of information and our hosts were over the top with suggestions and answering any questions. They shared some of their favorite places (Tasty Waves......Briton!) and provided contacts for our needs (cabs, bikes, etc). I can't say enough for the experience!

The grounds are meticulous! A lot of love and care has gone into this property. We woke every morning and heard howler monkeys throughout the day. There was the resident Sloth mom (Shirley) with her baby, other sloths, the playful monkeys, goudy's, toucans and all sorts of other animals around! It was amazing! Of course, the dog was the nicest thing ever!

We walked, rode bikes all over, some went zip lining, drove the scooter to Panama. Went to Bread and Chocolate for breakfast (AWESOME). Not enough space to keep going!

The beaches....Playa Chiquita, Playa Cocles, Punta Uva, Playa Negra..oh my - you can walk forever. Any direction you go is nothing short of beauty!

I could rant on and on but here's the simplest message.....GO! The property is great! The people are great! We'll be friends for a lifetime! We will be back! PURA VIDA!!

Owner's Response: It was so great having you all here! Can't wait to see you again. We'll have a pool by August, 2017, so come after that if you can. I'm glad you did some proper beach walking. You can walk both directions, pop up to the road for the bars and restaurants when you want, without crowds of people...some days you don't see another soul. Glad you liked the dinner and start-up package and was happy to help you organize your time here! See you soon.

Excellent Property, Location & Hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week and a half stay at Casa Bella. We had a wonderful time. We had arranged for dinner upon our arrival (which I highly recommend after a long day/days of travel). It was delicious and helped us settle in and feel right at home. We slept soundly every night to the sounds of the jungle and woke every morning to the howler monkeys howling in the trees around the property. We saw sloths on the grounds too! The house is well thought out and has everything we needed for a comfortable stay. It is clean and well kept. We were 8 in the main house and 2 in the casita. The yard and grounds are beautiful and private. You feel very safe there. Erinn and Darren are available for questions and help when needed and provide a wealth of information about restaurants, excursions, beaches, etc. The area is fun to explore. We loved the Jaguar Sanctuary and the zip line tour. We had a vehicle for part of our stay which was nice for exploring Cahuita and Manzanillo. We also rented bikes and enjoyed getting around that way as well. The food we ate at every restaurant was delicious the entire visit and the local folks were friendly. We were traveling with our children, 8 & 12 and another family. It was a perfect location to gather and spend time together relaxing. Thanks Erinn and Darren for everything you did to make our experience so memorable-including meeting both of you!

Owner's Response: Thank you for choosing to stay with us! We enjoyed meeting you guys, and are happy you had a great time! Our sloth keeps having babies, doing her job maintaining the population! And the monkeys make their rounds. This morning they were right over our house again. Nice wake-up call! Hope to see you guys down here again. Keep in touch!

Wonderful place to stay!!!

  • 5 of 5

I arrived on march 1st of this year with 9 of my friends and we were all very impressed with the place! Even though we got there pretty late, Erinn was there to greet us and make us feel welcome. We were able to see Shirley, the sloth, on the tree behind the casita with a baby! It warmed our hearts. There is an amazing home of montezuma oropendola birds just to the side of the property that awakes when the howler monkeys do and I couldn't get enough of those!! The insects and wildlife are just inches away from you at all times. Luckily, we didn't have any problems with that inside of the casitas though!! The community is tight and very helpful! The little shop on the Main Street was a good place to grab drinks and delicious croissants in the morning (they are made fresh daily), the pizza place across the main road was delicious too!! Rent bikes right there to get you to any one of many beaches and restaurants. A favorite was Caribeans, a coffee joint with chocolate at its center focus, made locally. Only a 15 min bike ride!

Erinn and Darren couldn't have been better hosts. They helped with absolutely anything that we needed or asked and have a wonderful home! Thanks again!!

Owner's Response: It was great having your group stay with us. I agree that renting a bike is a great way to get around! And we do have all we need right in our little 2 or 3 block village of Playa Chiquita. It's always great when guests are so enthusiastic about the wildlife. The birds and monkeys and sloths and agouti are amazing. Though we, too, are glad the creepy-crawlies don't find their way indoors. This is the benefit of building well up off the ground. After reading your review I've got a craving for some of that excellent chocolate they make at Caribbeans. I am not exaggerating when I say Paul makes the best chocolate I've ever had. I hope you all come stay with us again! I'm thrilled you enjoyed your stay.
