Mind-blowing view and sunsets. Just crazy amazing@ Book filled, wildly romantic, cozy and colorful one bedroom (half opening to living room) with gas fireplace, full kitchen, covered deck... It's funky and fantastic - with a canoe for two. (bring please organic soap/shampoo products please, to protect the lake, so close!) Why do I say funky? The tub/shower is behind a screen in the living room/kitchen area. The toilet is in a closet next to the kitchen! If you need LOTS of privacy, this isn't for you! People who love this place don't mind letting it all hang out. I would say they were Bohemians, world-traveled, with priorities other than the set up of the cottage. VIEW VIDEO- that sums it up... ! Narrow part of Lake Champlain, so you can canoe to New York State and some beautiful inlets. On a quiet 'dead end' lakefront dirt road, no traffic, just the sounds of the waves, the birds, the crickets, a train whistle across the lake. There are a couple of other cottages down the road - so you can borrow a cup of sugar if you want to!- but pretty private and quiet... Great retreat to finish your novel or start one. Doggies LOVE it. Plenty of squirrels to chase and no cars. Long walks in the farm fields or the nearby trails up to gorgeous views of the Adirondacks. Google Snake Mountain. You can sit and watch the lake and sunset from the porch or walk down a short winding path to the Look Out. Fires on the beach are the best, with a slate fireplace, - and plenty of beautiful smooth slate rocks to design your own. When I come back to visit there are often beautiful sculptures make of rocks. As I mentioned, the clawfoot tub is in the corner of the living room behind a Thai Screen! with a shower, yes-- but you can take a wonderful tub while talking to your beloved who is cooking you dinner! The toilet is in a little closet near the kitchen in a closet of its own. (Water Closet they used to call it?) Again, it's funky! This is NOT Motel 8! The mosquitos don't like the wind from the lake, neither do the flies, so that's a big plus. Every night there is a spectacular sunset, varied, intense, life changing. I ask that guests bring towels and double bed sheets. If you're flying in, can make arrangements. Yes, there is wireless, who can do without it? but NO TV. Huge selection of books you meant to read last year. Great fishing, perch and bass right off the shore, or take the canoe out. Great birdwatching! Eagles, huge woodpeckers, hummingbirds, eagles! This area of the Northeast has the darkest night skies -- so the stargazing is spectacular! Grill on the beach at dusk, or the deck, or take the canoe out and watch the stars. Wonderful hiking trails nearby and waterfalls... This is a great part of Vermont... ! It's 20 minutes, a beautiful easy drive to Middlebury. Or head to Bristol Gap. Doggies LOVE it here! Down the way there is another cottage, mine, that either I stay in, or rent out, but there is a fence dividing and you can't see each other. That being said, often renters get together and have cocktails! If I'm around, ( I have an art studio on the property but am seldom there) I will join you. This place is warm, inviting, and sane. If you are uptight and have lots of issues with who knows what, you just won't fit in. I need to say that up front. There is a special feeling here, because it's not a staid rental, but really a home. I keep in touch with many guests who have been here through the years because they are my kind of people. Open, warm and friendly, exploratory, curious, outdoorsy, adaptable, bibliophiles who love to cook out under the stars.
Incurable Romantics need sweet, quiet book filled love nests.

About Laurel Casey
Performance artist, writer, painter, jazz singer, - Yes. A person without a pension.. which is why I love guests at "Camp Casey" -- I didn't think I was cut out for landlady status but I have met the coolest people when I am in town, and they return again and again, almost like an extended family. You can't get more Vermont than this. People have been known to leave the rent in the cookie jar if they stay an extra day.
Laurel Casey purchased this Cottage in 1967
Why Laurel Casey chose Bridport
This cottage is perfect for loners, people who want time to themselves to think clearly and get to know somebody REALLY WELL! Take the canoe out and drift and watch the stars. Difficult to really see the stars in this busy world. But with no street lights in Bridport, it's not a problem! I've installed outdoor lighting and people come and turn them off~! The darker the better!? Wth a full kitchen and a grill on the deck, you can eat well and sleep well and recharge. Long wonderful walks on the lake front itself .. beach combing ( fossils) fishing, late night bomb fires, no need to behave- nobody will hear you-- And close to Middlebury, 20 minute drive, if you want some non-wild nightlife.
What makes this Cottage unique
I'd have to say the ambiance. You don't find this kind of Parisienne artist's studio feel very often. People arrive and they immediately want to create. They ask for paints, a canvas, they start writing poetry. They sit on the deck at the table, and watch the waves. They wander down to the lookout and then the private beach. They build a camp fire. They drink wine and look at the stars. They skinny dip. Uptight people will not like it here. It's that simple. (for example, there is an oil painting of a nude in the living room, and somebody duct taped a towel over it! It took the paint off her face!) But please, NO Smokers.

cozy retreat time
I spent 3 nights at the cabin with my dog for a little cozy, peaceful getaway, and it definitely fit the bill! The electric fireplace added to the charm and cozy effect, with the ease and convenience of being hooked up to the thermostat, so that you just set the temperature, and the fireplace would rev up as needed. It ended up being a rainy couple of days, so I missed out on getting to see the beautiful-looking sunsets, but would be worth another trip back, just to experience those! We did manage to get out for a hike one day to Snake Mountain, as others have suggested, and that was perfect, and only about 15 minutes away. Another day took a little outing into Middlebury, cute college town, and visited their natural foods coop, very well-stocked place with all you could need. The kitchen area is small at the cabin, but I brought supplies and food with me, and managed to cook up a nice beef stew one day! I found the bed to be kind of hard for my preferences, but I then opted to sleep on the daybed the other two nights, and that was fine. If you are looking for peaceful, simple, rustic but with a few nice amenities, this is a great find. Also, Laurel was very helpful and kind, offered some good suggestions about the area, and was nearby so stopped over when I was having trouble with the wifi and helped me get it hooked up correctly. And her dog is a charmer too!
Perfect Romantic Getaway!!!
Couldn’t have been better. So beautiful. So much to do and enjoy. Having the lake right there was amazing. Hope to come back soon. Quaint cozy and romantic accomadations. Had everything we needed! Thanks Laurel!
We just spent a wonderful long weekend at this lovely lakeside cabin - and it is perfect! Inviting and warm, it was just the right size for John & me & our pup Coraline - who had a glorious time splashing in and out of the water, chasing a ball and exploring the beach and the woods. We spent hours inside reading by the warmth of the fire, took the canoe out on the lake, sat on the porch at twilight and watched the setting sun, and saw more stars than we’ve seen in years. The cottage is peaceful, quiet and intimate with a wonderfully eclectic library, funky lamps and art, and is so full of color and life - a perfect antidote to the chaos of our normal city lives.
Thanks guys, beautifully written!
Perfect fall weekend at Camp Casey
My husband, our pup and myself all stayed at Camp Casey last weekend and enjoyed every minute of it! We arrived later in the night and Laurel had the door opened with a note welcoming us! The cottage was clean and even had some fresh flowers on the table :) The cabin by no means is large but it was a perfect size for what we were looking for. The cottage has everything you need! It is on a beautiful part of the lake and we saw an amazing sunset while we were there right from the deck. You are able to walk right down to the water and enjoy a nice canoe ride if you would like!! Our pup was able to run all around off leash and no one seems to be bothered by it which she loved! We drove to Burlington for the day which was about an hour drive but we got to enjoy driving through a bunch of towns in Vermont which we enjoyed and Sunday before we left we hiked Snake Mountain which was very close to where we stayed. It had amazing views like Laurel stated! Laurel was very accommodating and even chatted with us about her place and what to do near by. She gave us our privacy but was there if we needed anything. There are house closes by but it is very quiet and feels private. We look forward to going back to stay at Camp Casey! Our only regret is we didn’t get to say good bye to Laurel upon departing!
Wonderful people!! We MUST be related!!! Thanks for the great review, means a lot to me. xx Laurel
Lovely view, peaceful
Laurel is incredibly easy to work with, and has a great home! The views are amazing, and it's cozy and peaceful. We very much enjoyed our stay in her home. If you want to get away from it all, this is definitely the kind of place you want to go!
I will say, if you are looking for luxury or high end finishes, this is not the place for you. I only say this so people don't go expecting something else. If you have ever thought you might want to live in a tiny house, this is a good test of that! It is pretty small, and so you are in close quarters. The bathtub is right there in the open (although there is a curtain), and there isn't much privacy. That did not bother us, but it might others, so be aware of that. I would also say it is not a place for you if you have a disability or any mobility issues. Laurel is great about being up front about that though. As for why only 4 stars instead of 5 for me, my husband and I love to cook and are big foodies, and unfortunately the kitchen is not much for cooking. You can cook, but it is difficult as there is little room. Again, all things she is up front about. With such great markets, cheese, wine etc. in the area though (and limited restaurant options if you don't feel like driving one night), I would have loved to be able to cook a little more. All this being said, it's a great place to get away from it all, it's got a gorgeous view and our dog absolutely loved it. Thanks Laurel!
Great place to stay. Exactly as it seemed in the profile!
Had a wonderful and relaxing time!
Google Middlebury, Champlain Valley-- several great beer breweries, so many farmers markets and street fairs. This is the real Vermont. Glorious swimming holes in Bristol and East Middlebury. Revolutionary Forts across the bridge in New York State. Amazing hikes up Snake Mountain.
