Stylish Beachfront House at French Leave Beach,Walk to Town,NEW PRIVATE POOL

Bedrooms 6
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

6 Bedrooms, 5 Baths, Sleeps 14

Welcome to Alfred House, a new, luxurious, and secluded beachfront estate with private pool on the north end of world-famous French Leave Beach (formerly Club Med Beach). There are no houses between this house and the mile-long beach of pink sand where a Club Med once stood, the most sought-after beach location on Eleuthera. The ocean is turquoise, shallow, and historically safe, having served Club Med well for many years. Children love this shallow beach. Enjoy thousands of feet of deserted beachfront, extensive ocean views from every major room, and the sound and smell of the ocean from everywhere. Alfred House is located just a mile from the main town, Governors Harbours, which has stores and some excellent restaurants.

Alfred House is a 4000-square-foot, 5-bedroom Colonial style home plus one-bedroom guest cottage (800 square foot), located just 50 feet from the beach. The house was designed and decorated to reflect the laid back feeling of the cabanas at the Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda. Both the upstairs and downstairs of Alfred House have a wall of glass french windows, so as you move through the house, you see the sea at every turn. The house is furnished with distressed Indian teak antiques and custom pieces made of teak, mango, & cherry woods, and black and white photographs of movie icons.

Downstairs, Alfred House features a vast great room that looks out through a wall of glass french doors at the beach and ocean. The open-plan kitchen faces the ocean, and features custom wooden white shelving with Mexican shell encrusted stone counter tops. Appliances are stainless steel. The kitchen island is capped with a ten-foot teak counter with matching teak bar stools.

There are Honduran hardwood floors, cypress cedar ceilings, marble and slate tile, and mini-split air conditioning units. The upstairs features a huge media room overlooking the sea, along with four bedrooms, with a fifth bedroom downstairs. Four of the bedrooms have huge ocean views. The fifth has a hill/sunset view. Three large bedrooms have king beds; the two smaller bedrooms have two twin beds in each. The three king suites have ensuite bathrooms. There is a powder/shower room downstairs. The media room upstairs is huge, another gathering spot, and faces the ocean and shows turquoise water through several french doors.

The upstairs sun deck, with its grand row of honduran mahogany shutters, runs the length of the house (60 ft), with miles of beach and ocean views. It is furnished with comfortable white lounge chairs. Beneath it is a covered terrace, a shady spot for enjoying the sea breeze and the sound of the ocean. The floor of the terrace contains a lovely mosaic of a conch made by a local island artist. Seating for drinks or coffee is available on the ground terrace, where you can see and hear the ocean.

There is a one-bedroom beachfront house 50 yards from Alfred House that can be rented along with it for an additional charge, subject to availability. It has a huge 1100-square-foot teak wrap-around deck overlooking the sea. Inside, the house has 800 square feet, a large great room, full kitchen, separate bedroom, and a full bath. The living room has two day beds, so the cottage can sleep up to 4 guests. By including this cottage, Alfred can sleep 14 guests.

Amenities at Alfred House include full AC, a large flat-screen TV with DVD in the media room, high-speed internet with WIFI. The house does not have cable or satellite TV. Light housekeeping of two hours is provided three times per week.

Alfred House is surrounded by over 20 acres of secluded wild nature, full of casuarina trees, coconut palms, giant cacti, sea grape and lettuce, even though we are only a mile or so from town. (See the aerial view). Explore French Leave Beach, and see the ruins of the old Club Med, which was swept away by a hurricane. The grounds and gardens of Alfred House have palms, palmettos, cacti, hibiscus, and oleander. There is excellent snorkeling right off our property.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Your home is beautiful and we loved everything about Eleuthera and our stay at Alfred House. It was the perfect spot to relax and a wonderful place to come home to after our many adventures in and around the island. Your welcome letter and tips were so helpful. My children said Eleuthera is one of their very favorite places we've ever visited (and we travel quite a bit). We all hope we can return one day soon! Many thanks again!

Reviewer Comments:

A group of eleven stayed at Alfred House and Med Point in Feb 2018. Both houses were lovely. They were well supplied with kitchen ware, bed linens, towels and soaps. Christine Rolle led us to them the first time - definitely needed, but it was easy after that using cars rented from Tracy. Christine made us a great Bahamian meal. She and David were very helpful the first night when we lost power for a short time. This was really the only problem we had all week and it was minor. The Club Med/French Leave Beach was as beautiful as we remembered it from 25 or so years ago, but the snorkeling was not as good - partly due to lots of wind and partly due to fewer colorful fish around. The beach really is quite spectacular - and it is so long that it never seems crowded. At most there may have been another dozen or so people on it at any point in time, and usually fewer than that. Many of the other near-by beaches were totally uninhabited - and the weather was perfect! The local grocery - Eleuthera Supply - was good for most of what we needed, but the Island Farm store in Palmetto Point was really terrific for fresh spices, vegetables, bread and specialty spreads. The fishing boats in Governor’s Harbor and Tarpum Bay come in around noon-1:30 and were great spots for fresh lobster and grouper. Be sure to bring bug spray to use in the afternoon as the no-see-ums can get you! The Beach Book (two were at the house) were very useful for helping us find beaches for specific qualities (e.g. a shelling beach and a great calm water beach, etc). Norma's in Governor’s Harbor was a good place for local souveniers. We enjoyed dinner at Tippy’s and the Friday Night Fish Fry, but for the most part enjoyed cooking at the houses and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. The stars at night are really quite spectacular! Here are some recommendations we would make: Have at least two non-feather

Reviewer Comments:

We just spent a week at Alfred house and it was a wonderful place to stay. The location is perfect because it's a five minute drive into Governor's Harbour, but we basically had the beach to ourselves and all the privacy of a very remote location. The house was well equipped. The kitchen had everything one would need and more. Everything was very clean and well maintained. There were some beach chairs and even a few children's beach toys available. Overall, we had a great stay and found Alfred House to be in excellent condition which is saying a lot for any rental villa on the Atlantic ocean in the Bahamas. The minor issues like a tricky door handle or a loose toilet paper roller were trivial. People traveling to Eleuthera or any of the more remote Bahamian islands should know that power outages do occur and are part of the price of enjoying such a pristine and unspoiled location. Alfred House was lovely and we hope to return soon.

We had a wonderful stay at Alfred House. Matt Simon was a pleasure to work with. From our first conversation he was responsive and very helpful. The staff at the house was very friendly and professional. I almost hesitate to share the accolades of this property and would love to keep it private for us. But Matt, Tara, the owner and the staff were so nice to work with and I feel I should share my comments for them.

The house is well appointed, like a lovely hotel, and is situated on a beautiful beach. We have traveled extensively and rented other homes and this is definitely a 5 star property. Our family consisted of 3 adult couples and one 8 month old baby. We were completely comfortable. The house has nice amenities and is spacious. We loved that there were three areas in the house to gather; the downstairs living room and kitchen, the upstairs media room and the upper deck. The beach is one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever been on. I would get up every morning for sunrise and walk the beach, it was so picturesque I really recommend doing that.

The people of Eleuthera were very friendly. The house is situated in a very convenient location. We enjoyed dinners at Tippys, 1684 and were regulars at Bacchus Fine Foods. We really enjoyed the Friday Fish Fry in town. However our favorite meal was lobsters that Christine's sister Beulia's husband caught. I boiled them and they were delicious. Definitely try to get them. I ordered basic groceries from the market at Rock Sound and I should have ordered more bread. Ordering ahead of time was very convenient as the local markets may run out of things.

My husband loves to snorkel and there was good snorkeling at the beach and at Twin Coves. The water is calm and the sand is so soft is was perfect for the baby's first beach experience.

It's an easy fun day trip to Harbor Island but just staying at the house is enough to have a fabulous vacation.

My family had a fantastic experience and I definitely recommend this property. We look forward to renting again!

Beautiful Home in Amazing Setting

  • 5 of 5

Alfred House was the perfect setting for our family vacation. Two families were able to comfortably spend a week together with plenty of room. The furnishings are very nice with a large and comfy couch and seating area upstairs with a TV for watching movies in the evening. A similarly nice area was downstairs for the adults to relax and read books. The kitchen is well equipped with stainless steel appliances.

The beaches immediately in front of Alfred House were incredible with soft pink sand and places to snorkel or swim right in front of the house. Located in Central Eleuthera, we were able to explore the island without having to spend too much time in the car. Literally a few minutes from Governors Harbor, there were many close options for lunch or dinner. Banks Deli had great sandwiches and cheese with nice beer and wine selections. Baccus Fine Foods is another place to eat or get what you need to prepare a gourmet meal at home; we cooked fish we caught with Paul Petty's son Richard. Dinner at 1648 located at French Leave Resort was a special treat enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

Matt Simon and Tara were a big help with identifying resources and activities which allowed us to plan our week. Caretakers David and Christine Rolle were very nice and helpful as well. Everyone checked in with us and made sure we were happy during our stay which we were. We would stay at Alfred House again.

Paradise found on Eleuthera!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have rented homes on Eleuthera on quite a few occasions and Alfred House is without a doubt our favorite. The property has it all; views, privacy, easy access to outstanding beaches and the house is exceptional on all fronts. Matthew and his team at Eleuthera Vacation Rentals provide a seamless, enjoyable experience when booking your stay.

Relaxing stay

  • 4 of 5

We recently stay at the Alfred House. The house & beaches were beautiful. The Alfred House is very nicely decorated throughout. The house was clean upon our arrival. I was pleasantly surprised to find the kitchen drawers absent of crumbs & grime which unfortunately in other rentals we come across this quite often. Unfortunately rentals are not always kept clean. I was also thrilled we had no incidents with roaches during our stay as that is always a concern of mine---sorry I detest roaches & don't want to have to deal with that during a vacation. The house did have a few maintenance issues to address (door out to BBQ didn't work, front door knob came loose, 2 toilets ran & so the only way to flush was to keep the lid off the entire time and flush that way, roof leak). Christine, the caretaker, was very nice and checked in on us a few times to make sure we were fine. She also sells some nice treats & delivered a dinner she cooked for us one night. The house had beach chairs and umbrellas along with some beach toys and accessories for young ones which was nice to have on the beach since there is no shade to speak of. We used both the beach right out front which was great but we preferred the beach to the right which was a lot calmer and had a cool little reef area to check out. BTW while we were snorkeling one day my husband and I came across a Caribbean reef shark-that was pretty cool.

Couple of Suggestions for Owners:

-leave pen and paper for the guests as we had nothing to make notes or lists with

-perhaps have a few more games and movies (that work) for the guests as there is no cable/satellite service & many of the movies where scratched beyond being able to watch

-provide a working house phone as the one there never worked for us - not sure what the issue was but we couldn't use while it was charging & it always seemed to need to be charged

-leave a list of tips inside the home of when places are closed, when places may start to run out of items etc. The Welcome letter definitely had some good info but it could use a few more good tips

A few recommendations for Guests:

- definitely bring bug spray & be ready with it around 5 pm as the bugs really come out then and they were bad

- bring some games/puzzles etc if you can fit into your luggage (see above)

- Make a trip to the grocery in Rock Sound (The Market). It really was the only one stop shop place that had any real type of selections and the prices were a tad better

Alfred House is set on a point between 2 beautiful beaches: Club Med Beach, which is shallow and safe and superb for snorkelling, and boogie boarding, and Casuarina Beach, which is equally long and beautiful. The town of Governors Harbour, less than a mile away, is an easy and pleasant walk along the beach, and up a small hill. Snorkel and swim off our wide pink sand beach, then shower in our garden. 1000 feet up the beach is Twin Cove Beach which has the finest snorkeling in Governors Harbour. Our beaches are shallow, and historically safe, protected by a large reef system. The water is among the clearest in the world. Walk a mile to 1648 Bar and Grill, for a sunset dinner and live music. Sky Beach Bar is about 2 miles away along the beach. On Casuarina Beach, turtles nest at night, because it is so gloriously unspoiled. There is a SUPERB SANDY JOGGING/WALKING PATH extending north and south, along our beach, which is at times shrouded in foliage, and at times open to vistas of the ocean, on the old Banks Road, which is far more secluded and rustic than Banks Road on the south. One of the loveliest drives on the whole island, is the drive north, from Alfred House, to Knowles Drive, along the water, on the Old Banks Road. There is a youtube video on this. You will brush palm trees and sea grape, and see rare birds and hear the crickets sing. This is Club Med Solo. Set up your iPod and do yoga on the deck as the sun rises over the Atlantic.
