About Jim Florance
From left to right: Jim, Wes, Josie, Robin. Our family first visited Costa Rica in 2010 and fell in love with the Arenal area. Two years later, we spent our first week in the new house. We're in NJ most of the year. Jim is a marketing manager for an electronics company, Robin is an accountant. Wes is a senior in HS and Josie is a sophomore at URI.
Jim Florance purchased this House in 2012
Why Jim Florance chose San Carlos
You'll hear many stories about people that visit Costa Rica and experience an epiphany or an awakening. That's what happened to us. We began searching for land in Aug 2010 and found the Old Ceiba Tree lot. A year after beginning construction, the house is nearly finished. There is an energy that one can feel when you are there; it's indescribable but undeniable. Once you experience it, you'll be going back over and over.
What makes this House unique
We designed the home to bring the outdoors and indoors together. There are floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors that open to lake and volacano views. The cool mountain breezes flow thoughout the home. The temperatures average about 75°F year round so no airconditioning is necessary. We get our pure crystal clear soft water from a mountain spring ('naciente') that is about 6km in the virgin cloud forest. At night the temperates typically drop about 10° and in December and January you might even need to put a fleece on to stay warm. Being on the edge of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, we get a lot of rain but if you wait an hour the weather will change and when the sun pops out be careful because you can get a sunburn even when the sky is overcast (ask Josie). Each room has a terrace facing the lake/volcano side of the house. We love to enjoy the unbelievable cooking of Emilce, the former owner of a restaurant in Fortuna (Vaca Muca). She has the ability to take just about anything that's in the refrigerator and turn it into a meal that you'll never forget. Our favorite is 'pescado al ajillo' (corbineta or tilapia filet sauteed in fresh garlic) served with home fries, mixed vegetables (be sure to ask for chaote, cauliflower and carrots) and 'patacas' (plantain chips). Be prepared to rise early to the sounds of howler monkeys that frequently spend the night in our guarumo tree (a favorite hangout for all kinds of monkeys and birds) or the cacaphony of our flock of loras (red-lored parrots) that reside in the remaining branches of the 500 year old giant Ceiba tree that has unfortunately reached the end of it's life but still stands majestically on the west edge of our property. It's a local landmark that can actually be seen in satellite photos. We have a hiking trail that connects to the Linda Vista Hotel that winds past the Ceiba and down through the forest. Another trail has been cut farther up the hill that leads all the way down to the river for a refreshing dip.

Million Dollar View !
My husband and I, along with our son and his family stayed at Jim's beautiful house March 30-April 2, 2018. Upon entering the house we could not get over the amazing view. You could see the volcano and lake from every room. We found the house warm and inviting. After our teenage grand kids reluctantly put away their electronic devices, they had a great time playing board games, which were provided. They also gave the ping pong table a good workout. The pool was nice, although a bit cool. The hot tub however was perfect. We enjoyed making meals in the kitchen and found a wonderful little restaurant, The Phoenix, just a short walk up the hill. The caretaker was helpful in recommending places to eat and things to do. Our only complaint would be the screens were in disrepair due to damage from previous renters. We had a fantastic time and would wholeheartedly recommend this house and country to others.
Gorgeous setting and deliciously cooked food amidst nature!
We really enjoyed our three night stay here! The house comfortably fit our family of 5 (2 couples and 1 child).
- The view is stunning and you are surrounded by nature.
- Emilce, Luis and their son are incredible cooks and caretakers. We enjoyed their meals much more than any of the meals out, and wished we had used them for every dinner Though it may seem indulgent, we recommend breakfast by them - the traditional Costa Rican breakfast was our favorite!
- We enjoyed hot springs at Eco Terminales, hiking to the La Fortuna waterfall, and a hike in the national park. We intended to do the full hike to swim in the craters, but didn't make it all the way, but still enjoyed the hike and seeing monkeys and toucans. We would also highly recommend the Butterfly Conservatory located just 5 minutes beyond the house.
- La Vendanita has great smoothies! Located between the house and the butterfly conservatory in El Castillo.
- The drive to get there can be somewhat treacherous - both the route from Liberia and the rocky driveway. Make sure to come during daytime and have a sturdy car. We also highly recommend having access to GPS (we used Google Maps via an international plan on our smart phone) because signs are limited and we found the written directions to be inaccurate at points.
- The wifi barely worked so don't expect to be able to have regular or fast enough connection to do anything.
- The screens of the doors need to be repaired or replaced.
- If you're planning to spend most of your time near La Fortuna, it is a solid 45 minute drive.
Overall, we would return - it is peaceful, relaxing, and beautiful!
The house has a nice layout and was comfortably furnished if a bit well worn.
The kitchen needs a serious editing and a good cleaning. We had planned on cooking most of our meals but ended up eating out more as the kitchen grossed us out. We found several roaches in the cupboards and kept all of our food items in the fridge to keep the bugs out.
One of the reasons we rented this home was to enjoy the swimming pool and spa. We did use the pool for two days but by day three the water was completely clouded so we didn't use it again. Very disappointing.
This home does have fantastic views of lake arenal as its high up on the hill. A four wheel drive is absolutely neccesary to get there. Great driving directions were provided and we had no trouble finding the house but did we weren't prepared for how far out of town the home was going to be.
There are beautiful birds in the area, we saw monkeys one morning and loved both the lightening bugs and the chorus of frogs at night.
I gave this a three star review based on the condition of the kitchen and swimming pool.
What a wonderful place to stay! I would highly recommend this place Allan and Jim for great! Fabricio cooked for us each morning and the food was fantastic. The views are amazing.
Fantastic views and amazing location for rain forest activities
Wow, what can we say but thanks to Jim and his family for such an amazing place to spend a few days! We started our Costa Rican vacation here and were simply in awe of what we woke up to every morning!
From the gorgeous views from the many porches (coffee in hand) to the house itself (perfect for three travelling couples), to the amazing dinner prepared by Emilce and her husband, to the perfect recommendations by Allan, this truly is an outstanding place to experience the Costa Rican interior. Thank you Jim, we will be back!!!
Nice home in AMAZING location; great for families
We loved staying in a home that is pretty much in the Volcan Arenal Park! The house is clean and has amazing views; loved my morning coffee overlooking the lake and volcano. I definitely recommend having Emilce cook a few dinners; she and Juan are EXCEPTIONAL people. We only stayed 4 nights but could have easily stayed more - there is SO MUCH TO DO in the area and we only touched on it. Our favorites were hiking up by the Arenal Observatory Lodge, Tebecon hot springs including dinner (fantastic food), and Proyecto ASIS. Our only bummer was that the hot tub didn't get hot, seemed to be having an issue with power as it kept tripping the switch. The pool and ping pong table were a nice bonus for our family with kids. A GREAT family house for our 6 family members!
