Why Dan, Darcy & Neal chose Casco

The Markat house, so named for our parents Marty and Kathy that bought the house over 20 years ago, has been the site of many great memories for us. We hope that it can also be a place of great memories for you too. The property is on Thomas Pond which is a quiet lake perfect for water skiing or listening to the loons. Enjoy the water, croquet or bocce on the back lawn.

What makes this house unique

Our updated family home is well taken care of so you can relax with all the expected amenities of home!

A beautiful home in a beautiful area but really needs to be updated.

  • 4 of 5

Right off the bat, the owners were great. They were helpful and called right back when I needed them. There was an issue I dont want to mention online but they were great about it and refunded some of our money. The pond and back yard was absolutly beautiful, the view was amazing. This was one of my favorite family trips ever. That being said, we came with a 6 and 4 year old. Friends in the area came for dinner... The furniture and entertainment area are so old... the tv was a tiny little tube tv. The world series was on and it was so sad to watch on that little tv. It rained so we couldn't go out and explore and so we read books and let the kids watch cartoons and it was not a great experience. The couch was pretty uncomfortable. The biggest part is it smelled musty and there was dead bugs and dust everywhere. (We bought candles and febreeze for the whole house.) Dan mentioned the house keeper came the day before, I highly doubt it. We had to clean when we got there as well as do laundry. The sheets and towels had stains on them and had "camp" written on them in permanent marker. Some of the towels had ragged edges and were super rough. I vacuumed the bugs and the poor vacuum smelled and sounded like it was going to explode. The electricity went off in a storm and there were flashlights, no batteries. We found one candle and went to bed. We tried to open and close the window pull down treatments and three different times they completely fell off and we had to figure out how to put them back on. It was just too old of a house for young people and kids to stay in. We would need to find something more modern and comfortable. I hate to say it but its the truth. I highly doubt we'd stay again. Plus we ended up buying two more water bottles and trash bags because there was none else. I don't want to have to worry about things like that on vacay. The top bedroom really needs some sort of a closet to hang clothes. We had to use the one on the whole opposite side of the house. I was really sad we weren't allowed to use the fireplaces. One last thing, the pool table is crazy...It is basically falling apart, its terribly uneven, the sticks had no tips etc. We made due. Thank you for your time.

Not as promised

  • 3 of 5

Before writing this review, I want to say that we rented this place in Maine the week after Labor Day. I am not sure if this contributed to the issues (because it was not during the summer season).

The house has the potential to be beautiful. The kitchen area is wonderful - large, well equipped, and updated. The location is excellent.

From there, we had issues. One of the questions I asked before renting, and always ask, is are there air conditioners in the bedrooms. I will never rent a place that is not air conditioned. I was assured all 3 bedrooms had AC. And it was advertised as a home with AC. Well, the rooms had room air conditioners, all of which were removed from the windows and in a closet. We were there with my sister and brother-in-law and all of us are over 70. Putting an AC in the window was not possible. Especially without the proper tools. Additionally, one of the bedrooms didn't even have screens, so opening the window wasn't possible. The day time temperatures reached 84 degrees, which is unusual for Maine, but I know Maine weather, and know those temperatures are not impossible. One of the bedrooms registers 90 degrees at night.

I also asked about easily accessible bathrooms to the bedrooms. One of the bedrooms is up a steep set of stairs and there is no bathroom. None of us are physically comfortable going up and down stairs in the middle of the night. I understand that for some this is fine, but I do wish we would have been told this.

Finally, the house sits on a beautiful pond. But there was nowhere to sit and no chairs to move down to the water's edge to sit down.

Earlier in the summer, we stayed in a place in Windham which was perfect and had all the amenities as advertised.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations. You are absolutely right about the air conditioners. You did ask, and I did answer that they were in the bedrooms. As you suggested, because it was getting late in the season we had taken them out. It was around 60 the week before and the rooms were cold. However, obviously warmed up again as can happen and you bore the brunt of our mistake. There is no excuse. I'm sorry. From now on we'll leave them in until we shut down for the year. I wish you had contacted us so I could have had the property manager come by to put them back in. Still, my mistake for taking them out. I apologize. In terms of chairs for the dock, there are multiple folding chairs in the garage that are available to be taken down to the water. I'm not sure if you were unaware of them or was just too much to carry down. Again might have arranged something had we known. Regarding the bathrooms I thought I had been clear, but see that I wasn't quite. My response indicated that one bedroom was across the house from any bathroom. You are right I didn't explicitly mention stairs. I didn't mean to mislead you. Again I apologize that this detracted from your stay.

Loved the house needs a little updating

  • 4 of 5

Loved the location and the water. The only things I would change is the linens need to update to fit beds. The pillows are terrible bring your own. The house itself was very nice and I would come back but this time with my own linen and pillows. (Also needs an air conditioner in the kitchen area)

Clean, home away from home....

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay! 4 boys ages 13,11,6 & 4! More than enough room for all of us! Loved the dock for swimming and fishing. The house was so clean and fully stocked with everything we needed to cook. I was able to make dinner almost every night and felt right at home! Easy to communicate with the owners with any questions. They were very prompt in returning messages. Overall a great week and would definitely consider renting again!

The Perfect Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This house was nothing short of perfect. There were 9 of us and we had more than enough room. The lake was beautiful and we were able to fish and do lots of water sports. The house was exceptionally clean. I loved the big kitchen and the windows overlooking the lake.

Great Summer Holiday Stay for Party of 10

  • 5 of 5

We had the best the 4th of July to date. The house had everything we needed for our group: 6 adults and 4 kids under 6 years old. Thomas pond lived up to it's reputation of having great fishing and light boating traffic. The floating dock made the entire trip! There was space for us to sit and watch, take turns loading and off loading boats, tubes, paddle boards, etc. We hope to renting this home again in the future!
