Comfortable and functional
Very handy location close to shopping and beach. Walking distance to car rental companies with gas station across the road. Apartment has 1 car spot with clear markings. Small balcony with view to other buildings and beach.
There is an aircon, although noisy for such a small apartment WiFi is very good and the TV is a bit hard to use.
Good place, no pool
The property manager was adequately helpful.
The vacation rental was spotless.
I was very happy with the location.
I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.
Overall, I recommend this vacation rental.
Place was clean. Could have used more little things, had to go out to purchase garage bags even. Thought we were staying at a place with a pool but it has been under construction for awhile. Poor communication over the VRBO app.
Nice condo, convenient location
We had nice holiday. The apartment sleeps well 3 and is vety convenient.
Property has an ideal location for just about everything. The royal kuhio is central to everything and a short two blocks to the beaches of Waikiki and Parking is a definite plus! Unit is equipped with two beds and a pull out sofa in the living area with a small kitchen. A nice size patio and partial ocean views are also a nicety while in the area. The negatives included a very moldy bathtub (grout, baseboard and terribly moldy shower curtain) and filthy leftover cleaning equipment (mop and swiffer). Chairs at dining table are too tall for the table itself and uncomfortable to sit at. Make sure you bring sugar, salt, pepper, condiments and any cleaning supplies you might want for the time you spend here.
Pluses and Minuses. Easy fixes I hope they make
Great location. We’ve stayed at Royal Kuhio many times, and we like it. Not super fancy, but well maintained, currently being updated, friendly staff. Also in the center of everything--food, high end & discount shopping, short walk to beach, etc.
Unit itself is bright, clear, well organized. Owners clearly care enough to keep it clean and well maintained. Nice dresser & towels, a decent TV, AC filter had been cleaned, etc.
Frustrating because place could’ve been much better with a little effort. We stayed 3 weeks and wouldn’t do it again unless they fix some things below.
Kitchen: A super easy fix, wouldn’t even cost them much. Not enough utensils, bowls, etc. There were only 3 teaspoons, 1 soupspoon, 4 or 5 forks, no chopsticks, not enough bowls, (shallow soup bowls but no decent size microwavable bowls), etc. This made no sense. One reason you get a unit with kitchen is so you can cook and save money. We had to borrow a ton of stuff from our in-laws to make this work. They could fix this problem for $30 at Walmart (or $5 at the Goodwill in Kaimuki). A little more and they could get enough pots and things to cook with. Other units in Royal Kuhio have these things--disappointing this place did not. Hope they fix this since it’s super easy, cheap, and would greatly boost the experience.
Bedding: My biggest complaint. A little more expensive to fix, but still not too much, and it would completely change the experience.
Unit is listed as sleeping 4, but it’s not set up for it. The sofa bed in the pictures isn’t currently in the unit. They must have replaced it with a smaller one that only fits one person. Couldn't even fit two kids. We had to buy a $10 inflatable bed from Walmart to put on the floor. Also, it was the most poorly designed sofa bed I’ve ever seen. There’s a pointy spike in the dead center of the bed. None of us could sleep on it, so we had to buy an additional inflatable bed from Walmart to put on top of it. The owners wasted their money buying that bed. They should replace it or stop listing the property as sleeping 4.
The regular beds were also awful. The mattresses were the squishiest, most unstable ones I’ve slept on—almost as unstable as our $10 Walmart air mattresses. I get it, they want to keep the price down so they don’t want to spend a lot on mattresses, but seriously, they could pay for decent mattresses just by charging an additional dollar a night for a year. I really hope they do that.
