About Carol Kaurish

I (Carol) grew up in this home. The home was built in 1954. My family farmed the land and the property is still owned by myself and two brothers. We will be glad to share with you stories about growing up in the area in the late 1940's to the present. The house sits on approximately 3 acres of land with many maple shade trees and a nice creek running through the property. The neighbors are friendly and most are my friends who grew up with me. I live on a farm which is located on Limestone Drive with my husband. We are both retired but we enjoy doing lots of volunteering. Also, we have 5 wonderful grandchildren which live nearby and 1 wonderful grandchild which lives in Hi. My husband grew up in Cold Springs, Ky. across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Carol Kaurish purchased this house in 1954

Why Carol Kaurish chose Abingdon

I have decorated the house to reflect the 1950's and 1960's. This home looks like Mother's when I was growing up and is very comfortable. It is a home where children can roam inside and outside with very nice neighbors. The place is quite and tranquil. You can sit on the deck and read a book while enjoying the beautiful mountains. Also, you can watch the fire flies at night and the many birds during the day. The surroundings are very peaceful and quite. In the evening build a fire in the fire pit (roast marshmallows & hot dogs) and have a picnic on the picnic table. When the sun goes down and night falls enjoy gazing at the beautiful moon and stars. Also, take a walk whenever, lots of room to wander and children to play. Just plan on coming here to relax and have a good time with whoever travels with you. Three acre of land to roam about.

What makes this house unique

Beautiful rural countryside surrounded by mountains and forest. River and lake nearby which is great for boating and fishing. Spectacular and famous (Applachian Trail, Creeper Trail) to go hiking and bicycle riding. Old country stores, replica of the Alvarado Train Station, beautiful fields with cattle grazing, sheep, and goats. Also, enjoy shopping at the Abingdon Farmer's Market for fresh produce grown locally. We have several different festivals going on through the year. Hungary Mother Park, Backbone Rock Park, Bristol Caverns, and Hidden Valley Lake (this lake sits on top of a mountain). You can use a paddle boat but not a boat with a motor. It is very unique and different.

The house has lots of room with the 4 bedrooms and basement. Lots of people enjoy walking around on the 3 acres of land and children love to roam. Also in the basement is your laundry room and a place to hang your fishing equipment, park your bicycles, coolers, etc. Lots of room. Another thing that children or teenagers enjoy is the room downstairs with 2 double beds plus a very unique and different closet. They have referred to this as their own pad. I have found in the closet a pillow and a sham where some little fellow has taken a nap. It was so sweet and brings back lots of memories of my growing up years.

The reason I named it Alvarado Vacation Home is that I want everyone to feel like this is their home away from home. All the leisure of home but not having to clean but just having a lot of fun. A good place also for a homecoming or get together with family who might live in the area.

Just check us out.

Beautiful country retreat.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay, it was very clean and cozy with a spacious deck and yard.

It is a short drive to town where there are restaurants and shopping. Mr. and Mrs. Kaurish

were great hosts who filled us in on some local history and answered any questions we had.

We are looking forward to maybe staying there next year.

Wonderful and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here recently as "home base" for riding the Creeper Trail. There were 7 adults and we were very comfortable. Plenty of comfy seating in the living room, and enough seats for all of us in the kitchen, too. The property is loving and peaceful. Convenient to Damascus or Abingdon. Had and wonderful time and highly recommend these hosts!

Lovely, quiet house

The house was in a secluded area that was very quiet. It was extremely clean and inviting as well. I enjoyed my stay there, and will stay there again if I return to the area!

Quaint Family Retreat

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying at this beautiful family home in Virginia. Carol and her husband were awesome and very accommodating. My kids loved playing outside. There is plenty of room for the entire family. Just note the two double beds are in the basement, in case you have small children. Also if you have a larger family staying you might want to bring some extra plastic silverware. Close proximity to Abingdon. We enjoyed the Creeper Trail and a show at the Barter Theater during our stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your nice review. We appreciated it very much. Come back and visit us any time. The one bedroom downstairs has been a great joy for teenagers when they come with their parents and even small children have loved to take a nap in the closet. They enjoy the space plus it is kind of like having their own little place to hang out. I never have thought about having plastic forks because I have silverware for 12 people. Thanks again for the great review. Carol Kaurish

Cozy, clean home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in September staying here with our 3 kids. There was plenty of room for all of us and we were only 2 quiet country miles from the Alvarado station of the Creeper Trail. The home was fully equipped and very clean. Carol was so welcoming! We hope to be back again next year.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for that wonderful review. I am so glad that you all liked the country and the house. Thank you for taking such good care of the house and leaving it so clean. I will look forward to you returning with your family. Also, thanks for mentioning the Alvarado Station. This was a working post office when I was growing up. The mail traveled by the Creeper Train. There were so few houses back then that your mail, just said Rt. 1 Alvarado, V.A. The mail man knew everyone.
