Allen House Family Retreat: 12 Acres of Meadows and Redwoods

Bedrooms 5
Property type estate
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Estate, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed(s), 3 Baths (Sleeps 10-12)

The Allen house has returned as a popular vacation rental. It is perfect for a family vacation with precious privacy out of the coastal fog only 10 minutes from the coast and the historic village of Mendocino. Because it sleeps 10 in beds and 2 (child-sized) on futons, it is a good place for retreats, reunions, yet romantic for 2 on a honeymoon or anniversary. Children love the property with a tree house, a giant swing, a very large lawn for sports and plenty of room to run.

The house was remodeled in 2008 and is continually well maintained.

The main house sleeps 10: One master bedroom with a queen-sized bed and private bath upstairs and 3 bedrooms and bath downstairs with 4 twin beds, one double and 2 extra futons (child-sized). There is another bedroom with a new, plush full-sized bed and bath in the cabin which accommodates two. In the main house, the downstairs bath has a beautiful antique claw-foot tub and a stone shower that feels like showering in a waterfall. The shower has a door onto the deck with a new outdoor spa.

A large country kitchen is the place everyone likes to congregate with a beautiful wood stove that works and a Viking range. If your family likes to cook as much as we do, you will love our kitchen. It is supplied with all gourmet equipment including a Kitchen Aid mixer. The warm dining room leads out to a pleasant deck with southern exposure. We eat outside all year round on outdoor tables with umbrellas that can seat 12 easily. More seating available if necessary. There is another dining table in the living room that can be used as a game table or more seating with its 2 leaves.

Although the house is cozy with 2 fireplaces, one in the living room and another in the kitchen, we have central heating for people who do not want to fuss with fires.

All beds have fine European linens with goose down comforters and pillows. There are non-down pillows also for anyone allergic.

The charming guest cabin near the house is perfect for the grandparents who want some privacy, but close enough to be a part of the bigger family. It is equipped with a private bath and shower with its own hot water heater, a small refrigerator, and fixings for coffee or tea.

There is a new, plush full-sized bed there with the same down comforters and fine bedding.

There is a propane bar-b-Que on the deck along with a charcoal Weber with lots of room for eating Al fresco. Families love the setting! One child said, 'Boy, this is the way to live!'

You have a choice of reading in the hammock by the pond or jumping in the car for a 10-minute-ride to the beach to go swimming, picnic or take a kayak ride down Big River with lots of wildlife: ospreys, herons, otters, seals.

We have weekly maid service and WiFi access. Please note: we have no television reception, though there is a DVD player available and a video rental store in Mendocino. We also have a extensive DVD collection along with CD's and satellite radio.

Our new spa is heavenly! Especially at night because it is situated so that you can see the stars without the ambient light. The children are tucked in their beds and you can have the outside to yourselves! It is cleaned well once a week.

A year-round vegetable garden is at your disposal, where you can pick anything that is ripe and add it to your meals. Raspberries, strawberries, peas, beans, tomatoes, squash, and salad stuff are the summer selection. squash, beets, broccoli, cabbage and root veggies are for picking in the winter.

Concerning pets: you can talk us into bringing a dog as long as you can guarantee it will not dig in the garden, chase our beautiful wildlife: deer, quail, wild turkeys and rabbits, or scratch the doors trying to get out. The only damage we have had was from dogs so we do ask for a refundable deposit.

A short walk to upper meadow and you feel you are alone in the universe. A great place to write, read or meditate!

This is a true retreat. You won't believe the peace and quiet!

About Rosemary Allen

We have been married 50 years and have made our living as artists all that time. Visitors will see some of our work on the walls and books about our work.

Rosemary Allen purchased this estate in 1971

Why Rosemary Allen chose North Coast

We have owned this property for over 45 years. After 4 years of living on ocean front property, we decided we were ready for sunshine and a place to grow vegetables. The ocean is fun to visit, but it's hard to live with the fog every day. We have never regretted making this our home We have added on rooms and baths over the years and take pride in maintaining all the acreage. It is a jewel. We raised our children here, so we love to share it with families.

What makes this estate unique

Privacy and Quiet and Sunshine! Ahhhh.

Excellent Choice for a Cozy Getaway

  • 4 of 5

A very lovely property. The online photos are excellent, but donʻt convey how delightful the house and property are.

We had a party of five adults and two teenagers (17 and 18 y.o.) for a Friday through Sunday stay. It was unanimous that we all had an exceptionally wonderful experience. My husband fired up the old-fashioned wood kitchen stove for heat (after cleaning out eons of ash and dental floss), something he grew up with but hadnʻt done in 35 years, and really enjoyed the nostalgic experience. We didnʻt tell the teenagers about the wi-fi but they had a terrific time reading, taking turns on the swing, exploring the property, and playing with the dog outside. There were no complaints of boredom from either even once.

The house is cheery and bright, immediately comfortable and homey, with lovely skylights in the living room, a well-equipped kitchen (but bring your own preferred spices) with a high-quality gas stove and dishwasher. Very clean and well-maintained in general. Nice to stay in a place where you donʻt have to lock the doors at all.

The paintings, excellent library, the picnic table at the top of the ridge, the swings, the creek, the fish pond ... there were lots of charming touches that were wonderful surprises. I forgot to try out the hammock, but it was probably still wet from the recent rain and fog.

The only quibble we all had was the beds are hard. The first night was extremely difficult. My husband and I stayed in the little cabin above the main house and solved the bed problem by putting a down comforter under the fitted sheet. We also had to shut off the water heater and little refrigerator because they came on all night the first night, waking us up several times. We turned down the heater for the same reason but we were comfortably warm all night. So the second night was wonderful. Okay, one tiny problem ... no extra toilet paper. We had to retrieve some from the main house.

The main things we did were to go to Glass Beach, a little north of the town of Mendocino, and we visited the beach at Big River twice. There are really incredible art galleries in the town of Mendocino, and we had an exceptional lunch on the deck overlooking the ocean at the Mendocino Cafe, 10451 Lansing, Mendocino.

Our entire party would highly recommend the Allen House. We wished we could have stayed longer and would love to go back.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the praise. A very plush mattress had been ordered for the cabin, but not delivered until this Friday. Sorry for the other inconveniences. They will be all tended to before your next stay. We DO have wi-fi connection. I am sorry if that was not clear to you. We stream movies and use facebook! Please come again. The Allens

The Allen House - An excellent choice to plan your family vacation in beautiful Mendocino.

  • 5 of 5

Our experience at The Allen House was absolutely great! The quiet, scenic, peaceful setting of the home, the sweet couple (home owners) who live close by to answer all our questions over the phone and help us with anything, and yet, gave us all the privacy that we needed. The warm cozy house so well equipped with all the essentials made our stay so memorable. Our group had kids of all ages and we had such a terrific time exploring the surrounding areas, playing games in the open, exploring the tree house with the zip-line, swings and of course the hot tub where we would relax after the day long activities. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at The Allen house and would love to come back and visit this place yet again. We have nothing but sweet and fantastic memories of our vacation.

wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5

our stay at the Allen House was one of our more memorable family vacations. The setting, with the house settled in a forrested and beautifully maintained piece of property, was idyllic. Every aspect of the house was as described and the large kitchen and dining room provided us with hours of long drawn out meals with much laughter and enjoyment. We also made good use of the back porch in the glorious sunshine and while we never made it itno the spa, it certainly was there and inviting.

The area, with its craggy rocky beaches was also a delight for its natural beauty.

We deiscovered the fish market and availed ourselves of fresh caught salmon and uni which was an added surprise.

My grown children and their partners and I want to thank the Allens again for the lovely time spent there.

Family Wedding Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

Our family arrived at the Allen House after dark but even so could tell right away we wouldn't want to leave anytime soon. My 11 year old daughter said, "This is my dream house!" The house and grounds are beautiful and so comfortable. Rosemary was a pleasure to communicate with. We WILL be returning for hopefully a longer stay!

This is truly a one of a kind treasure. A beautiful farm house nestled in the giant redwoods is magical. A hot tub to sit at night and see the stars and milky way. A giant rope swing hanging from a redwood tree. Trails to walk or just relax in front of the fireplace or on the decks. We had 3 generations (3 - 75) of our family and everyone was thrilled and want to go back. We can't wait for our return visit. Better than we expected.

Best Place on Earth

  • 5 of 5

Our family discovered the Allen House six years ago! It has been our favorite place ever since!. We absolutely love and cherish our time there as it is a very special place. The outside surroundings are right out of a story book - very peaceful, beautiful and private. The kitchen is well outifitted and is big enough to cook and spend time with friends and family while you do so. The beds and bedrooms are very comfortable as is the whole house. Inside and out are very well maintained and clean. The owners are very delightful to do business with as well. We have stayed in numerous other places in the area but nothing compares to the Allen House. It feels like a second home to us!

On our own property we have trails that you can take that connect with a forest preserve which borders us on 3 sides. Our house sits in the middle of 12 acres which affords lots of privacy and quiet. The town of Mendocino, only 10 minutes away, is made up of historical Victorian buildings which are maintained with little changes since the 1800s and yet have all the modern conveniences, fine restaurants and museum.
