Some tips to decide between our two cabins, Romance and Amor:
- Amor is located on the bottom of the Gracias a la Vida property. Romance is a few
minutes further down the hill, outside the main gate, on the adjoining property to the
north. Amor has a lake view and is more secluded. Romance has a lake and a volcano
- Both have 2 bedrooms and can accommodate a fifth person in a single inflatable bed
in the living/dining area. Both are colorful, light-filled, and have elevated decks.
- Both are well insulated and ecological in design and energy usage. Romance has
- Both are located in a pastoral setting amidst sheep, horse, and cows grazing in the
distance. Our golden retrievers occasionally visit Amor (especially Oso, a gentle soul
who loves children). The dogs do not have access to Romance.
- Romance has Moroccan décor and Amor Egyptian furnishings.
- Amor has its own quincho (covered barbecue area with chairs). Romance has a
portable outdoor grill.
We are naturopathic/homeopathic doctors and authors, married for 30 years. In 2005 we took a kayak trip to Pumalin Park in the South of Chile, and fell in love with the area around Pucon. We were captivated by the breathtaking beauty of our property and bought it the same day! We named our land Ayun Mapu (Mapuche for 'land of love' or 'land that we love.' We built our dream home and house for our caretaker family. Last year we added a cabin. We have landscaped professionally and enjoy gorgeous flowers, native trees and bushes, fruit trees in a park-like setting as well as savoring the bounty of a large organic garden. We now have 9 acres, sheep, chickens, and a resident German shepherd as well as our outdoor cats and golden retrievers who accompany us from the U.S. It helps that Judyth got a degree in Spanish literature and Bob is avidly improving his Spanish. Our home, Gracias a La Vida, which we vacate ourselves seasonally for guests, was so popular that we decided to build a second rental home which was more economical: Amor del Lago. It is also a place for us to stay when our home is rented.
Judyth Reichenberg purchased this house in 2012
The view, the view, the view!! The shimmering water of the huge lake, the smoldering, snow-capped volcano ten minutes away; the countless stars of the Milky Way from the terrace; the delicious home-cooked Chilean meals with the best wine on the planet; the riotous cosmos, dahlias, lilies, lavender; the compact, colorful kitchen with all the modern conveniences; the great mattresses and soft sheets; the long summer days of light until 10PM, more hikes and hot springs and restaurants than we could name; the honking Chilean geese; the elusive, green lorakeets, who show up now and then. Watching our lambs frolic in the pasture next door. Buying delicious fresh or smoked salmon from the local fishmongers. Attending top-notch yoga classes just ten minutes away. Strolling on the beach all by ourselves. Kayaking on Lake Villarrica with outrageous views everywhere, and no other paddlers in sight. Staying toasty with the Amesti woodstove or visiting one of the numerous local hot springs on a rainy day. Savoring delicious, healthy, organic salads and fresh herbs right from our own garden and greenhouses. Eating the wonderful, fresh cheese that you can buy on practically every corner in Pucon and that we hope to make from our sheep's milk this year. Greeting our cheerful cuidador (caretaker) each morning as he asks, unfailingly, 'Como amanacio?' meaning 'How did you wake up?'
It took us less than five minutes after stepping onto our land to decide to buy it! The sheer beauty was jaw-dropping! Earlier this year we found the perfect place for the chalet which offers the unique combination of seclusion (nestled in the forest), expansive view of Lake Villarrica, the surrounding mountains, and our sheep pasture, and a remarkably peaceful environment.
From the guest book:
As all other guests before us, we had a wonderful time at Amor del Lago! Bob & Judyth were fantastic hosts and made sure the cabin has everything one could even think of... It truly feels like a home away from home.
We arrived in the rain, but the rest of the week the weather the weather was very good. We stayed busy most of the time and put in lots of hiking [three pages of detailed information about the various hikes, trails, waterfalls, hot springs]. At the end of each day, we would enjoy Pucon- pisco sour at Mamas & Tapas bar on O'Higgins followed by a meal at Trawen, an excellent restaurant!
Bob and Judyth, thanks for sharing your piece of paradise with us. We truly enjoyed everything here and hope to be back one day.
We stayed for four nights in this wonderful cabin overlooking lake Villarrica in early January. With four adults (mom, dad and two adult sons), we found the place cozy, extremely well laid out and equipped, and views forever. It is a little hard to get there (need a 4x4), but it's so WORTH IT! The owners, Judyth & Bob insist that you visit their house - and by god, do take them up on their offer - it's gorgeous. The area has tons of activities, and so worth the trek. Cannot recommend it more.
Lovely cabana, well equipped and very comfortable, gorgeous view, great area for fun activities. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!
This place is a find. Judyth and Bob honestly want the place to be very livable and have clearly put a lot of thought into designing it that way. They occasionally rent out their palace and live in this cabana. The location is super close to Pucon, but far enough that you are in the country. Cubinato, the horse, is a sly fellow who loves carrots and visiting. The dogs and cats (which generally hang out up at the palace) are super sweet and my kids loved them. The sheep are lacking in personality, but make great backgrounds for photos. The bird life is remarkable. Bring your binoculars as I had pangs that I wished I had mine several times - hummingbirds, parrots, and lots of other birds I'm not familiar with (we saw an Andean Condor on the volcano!)
Other things you'll care about
* WiFi works well and was reasonably speedy on my phone, but for some reason ran like a pig on my laptop (maybe my issue)
* Personally, I don't think you need 4-wheel to navigate the road, but we had it.
* Washing machine worked great - you'll be encouraged to line dry for power reasons, which worked well
* Judyth and Bob know the area super well and are a great asset for ideas for activities and are VERY approachable
We rented a couple of other cabanas in Chile on our trip and they were jokes compared to this (no hot water, no towels, everything was very cheap - low standards). The Pucon area is very interesting and will keep any group engaged for at least a week. We did whitewater rafting, went to a thermal bath, did horseback riding, and climbed the volcano. I'll say one thing about the volcano. Obviously, it is a lot of work to get up and down, but it is a fairly hazardous trail (at least in April) with everyone falling down multiple times and most catching themselves a couple of times before sliding down the "hill" many feet.
Our guides kept us moving with much less breaks than anyone in the group wanted. However, I've hiked all over the world and it was a one of a kind trip - just don't assume it is safe by American/Canadian/Europe standards.
Book it, and if you are thinking about early April it is an awesome time to be in Pucon with very few tourists, lovely weather, and days long enough to tire anyone out.
p.s. Go ahead and bring your good camera as the sunsets from the deck alone are worth the lugging.
Amor del Lago is in a beautiful location with gorgeous lake views surrounding by trees. Our family of three had a wonderful stay, and Bob and Judyth were truly tremendous hosts that answered dozens of questions before and during our stay to make it as wonderful as it could be.
The accommodations are excellent, with many personal touches throughout. All the amenities we needed were available for a very comfortable stay. We would come again, and certainly recommend Amor del Lago to others.
We loved the array of visiting birds (parrots, tiques, lapwings), hares running across the property and sheep moving about.
Access to town was easy, and we had no problem getting around from this location. Great location, great cabana and incredible hosts. Amor.
great way to catch a glimpse of the chilean equivalent of lake tahoe. private w lovely views in a great cottage (very well thought out ) . we especially enjoyed visits from the incredibly well mannered dogs and the mare and her foal. very fortunate to have made the acquaintance of other guests on the property who got us caught up on life in pucon. we hope to return. muchas gracias !
Before arriving here we had spent some nights not sleeping so well because of noisy surroundings. Being able to sleep window open and only hear birds and an occasional distant dog was a real relief. We had our best sleeps during our five week trip in Chile.
The cabana is tastefully decorated and all the stuff was decent and not just "good enough for rental".
We did not have a car or bikes. We paid 6000 pesos a taxi ride to and from the town when we did not walk. Often when walking we got a ride from the owners, housekeeper or friendly locals. It's one hour walk to Pucón. We thought about renting bikes, but we were asked 12000 pesos per bike per day, and the bike renters seem reluctant to rent overnight. The owners and the housekeeper were all super nice, and once we even received a good bagful of self grown salads. You will be asked to pay for the housekeeper separately, around 10%. The bed was very comfortable and the blanket warm enough to allow keeping that window open and enjoy the fresh November nights. The view over the lake is great and it was a pleasure to observe the animals grazing around the cabin.
The perfect year-round getaway to enjoy the wide array of activities in the scenic Chilean lake district. Enjoy hiking in the beautiful nearby national parks, rafting the Trancura river, climbing or skiing the volcano, and soaking in a local hot spring. Visit one of the fifty-plus of restaurants in Pucon or dine indoors or out while taking in the a panoramic view of lake villarrica right from our chalet and terrace. After a magical sunset, view the entire milky way, the southern cross, and other constellations of the southern hemisphere. Listen to the sounds of the native bandurrias (geese). In the winter, get a massage, relax by the fire with your favorite book, take a yoga class ten minutes away, marvel at the snow-capped volcano ten minutes away, snowboard, snow ski, and enjoy the tranquility and exquisite beauty of off-season pucon. Make pucon the beginning or perfect ending of your patagonian adventure.
