3 bedroom, 2 bath on waterfront property with beautiful views

Want a well appointed and cozy home for your next getaway with beautiful sunrises and sunsets, nature calling (eagle nest or Osprey near the end of the pier)and a place to enjoy yourself? This is the place.

No fighting the traffic or crowds, this lovely home is located on Holiday Island, a small residential community on the Albemarle Sound, 15 minutes away from the main roadway (Route 17 or also known as Ocean Highway). Located 30 minutes from Edenton and 30 minutes from Elizabeth City. 60-90 minutes from Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake (lots of military bases and museums) and the Outer Banks .

There are many small towns close by to visit and explore. The home has a fully equipped kitchen and sleeps 7 comfortably.

The home has been completely renovated and updated. The outside space of the home continuously gets changed with new features. and now is being updated with a new 10 foot by 20 foot deck right up to the water edge along with raising the first part of the pier and extending the beach approximately another 30 -40 feet.

There is a 50' flat screen in the great room. Cable TV Wireless internet is provided. Pandora and Netflix are already on the TV sets.

The downstairs bedroom has a queen bed in the master bedroom with a TV. All the bedrooms have wonderful mattresses. One full bath also located downstairs.

One upstairs bedroom has a queen bed. The other upstairs bedroom has a twin over full bunk bed. There is one bathroom upstairs with a beautiful remodeled walk in shower.

All linens and towels are provided. We do not supply beach towels. Please do not use the bath towels for beach towels.

Complimentary coffee, tea, sugar, creamer and a huge variety of spices are in the cupboard along with some paper towels and toilet paper to tide you over until you get to the store.

You can bring some firewood because there is a fire pit next to the beach and a picnic table right in the side yard to have lunch or a snack.

There are beautiful views from the sun room overlooking the water (just 50 feet away). Enjoy the wonderful southern breeze coming from over the water on the pier while watching the pair of eagles, hawks, egrets and on rare occasions, dolphins.

The children will enjoy using the cove, picking up clams or crabs off of its sandy bottom. There is a crab pot provided and they can enjoy kayaking in the shallow cove. For the more adventurous, there are many canals, and you can spend a few hours exploring them in the kayaks.

There are nine freshwater rivers that feed into this sound making it a great place to fish. So a boat would be really nice to have. The ramp is located in the community center about 3 minutes away. Fishing in the canals or out in the sound, you can catch catfish, flounder, croaker, large mouth bass, striped rockfish (striped bass), white perch, crappie, trout, speckled trout, puppy or slot drum (redfish), gray trout, spadefish, sheapshead, tautogs, bluefish, spanish mackerel. Anyone that has fished here has said that fishing was great.

There are also beach chairs, umbrellas, corn hole boards, floats, life jackets, swim floats, paddles for the kayaks and fishing rod holder for the brown kayak and a stereo for music outside of the house all located in renters shed.

A quick note and warning. When you are playing music, keep in mind that there is a new noise ordnance that was just issued in 2017 that limits noise to no more than 50 feet past the property line throughout the county. That includes playing music, singing, shouting, fighting or creating noise through loud or boisterous speech audible off premises. Parents can be help accountable for violations. The same applies to the neighbors. The sheriff (252 426 5615) is responsible for enforcing the new ordinance and carries anything from a warning, $100 fine or 30 days in jail.

Along with the music system that is available there are:

6 kayaks for your use while visiting.

4 bicycles and a child's bike.

We are hoping to put a new 14x 30 foot pool in 2018.

My wife has opened up an Art and Music Studio on the island called Rose Gate Studio for the Arts and a satellite studio in downtown Hertford. The one on the island is located in the clubhouse on Holiday Island. If you are interested in doing some “one on one” art lessons, art projects with your family and friends or just music lessons, give us a call ahead of time. There are multiple instruments: Baby grand piano, guitar, harp, hammered dulcimer and banjo in the studio. Just call before and let us know when you plan to be down and what it is you would like to do and we will try to accommodate you. The website is RoseGateStudio.weebly.com.

Yoga classes/instruction are also available.

Freshly roasted coffee is available by request and can be delivered.

Edenton Coffee House at 302 S. Broad Street Edenton 252 482 7465 is similar to Starbucks. Only sells organic and free trade coffee, espressos, smoothies, teas, pastries, desserts, breakfast and lunch with live music on Fridays from 7-9PM.

Large park with a huge covered area with swings for the children and a place to jump off of the side of the bulkhead into the water along with a large field and a basket ball hoop. Tennis court are also located in downtown Hertford.

You can play golf on a PGA golf course at the Albemarle Plantation that is next door to Holiday Island. A PGA tournament was played there in 2014 and 2015. It is a private Golf and Marina Club, However the public is welcome to dine in their fabulous clubhouse and grill.

There are many 'mom and pops' stores and restaurants around here and we have included a list of them in the email attachment that you will receive when you book this home. There are also a lot of the franchise restaurants and stores too.

There are also Kayak tours in Edenton along with running and bicycle marathons. Edenton hosts yearly house tours of the historic district homes. Fourth of July Fireworks are absolutely awesome as you sit at the water's edge.

You can bring your boat or jet ski. We have an additional lot on a canal to park your boat or jet skis. The boat ramp is about 3 minutes away

We have a boat on site until the other lift is operational that is located on another piece of property a block away. We enjoy taking people out on boat rides and you are more than welcome to take one with us.

We have just listed a few of the things to do here in the area. There is so much more to do. We provide a handout that is emailed to you when you book with a list of additional things to do. We also have card games and board games here too. We do not have any game consoles.

About Nora Crouch

We love the water and the serenity of nature. Our home in Virginia Beach overlooked a beautiful reservoir where wildlife abounds. Our retirement dream was to find a home like ours in Virginia but smaller and on the intra-coastal waterway in a smaller community where peace and quiet abounds. That the idea of rush hour was that if you listened real carefully you might be able to hear the sound of a golf cart or a lonely car go by. I think I can say we succeeded in that point.

After making our getaway available year round to travelers since 2013, we have decided open up the home for just 2-3 months every summer.

Nora Crouch purchased this house in 2012

Why Nora Crouch chose Northern Coast & Outer Banks

My husband and I discovered Holiday Island while on a trip in 2012. We fell in love with the view from the home and its location midway between two wonderful towns---Edenton and Elizabeth City. We were able to purchase the house and begin the process of creating our retirement paradise/resort. Along the way, our friends were so interested in our project; they asked if they could rent it out for a weekend or week. We decided to make it available year round in early 2013. Holiday Island is not a 'touristy destination'. It is just a wonderful area to relax, take a walk or just sip coffee (or wine). A 181 foot long pier has been built with a 16x24 platform in the middle with a picnic table on it. We do keep our boat there on the lift. On beautiful boating days on the largest freshwater sound in the country, you may like to take a ride with us . We acquired the lot right next door to the house which now provides an additional 81 feet of sound front privacy. The pier is located inside of a cove. The water is 8-24 inches deep at the bulkhead and about 12 inches deeper at the end of the pier. At the edge of the cove the water is 5 feet deep, once outside of the cove it goes to 15-20 feet deep. The bottom of the cove is sandy with some sea grass. It is a great place to launch kayaks that are provided, or let the children play. The adjacent lot has enabled us to add a beach, a place to play corn hole, bocce or croquet along with a second pergola and palm tree oasis.

We added a beautiful barn to the adjacent lot this past summer which will eventually house a game room, movie room and studio. Plus, an in ground pool is coming!

What makes this house unique

Once you leave the island, 15 minutes away is the town of Hertford ,chartered in 1758, making it the seventh oldest town on North Carolina. It is a lovely little town with an old school pharmacy and a soda fountain counter. There is an art gallery, coffee shop, dress shop, and antique store for something to do on a rainy day.

The Albemarle Plantation is next door to Holiday Island. The public is welcome to dine in their fabulous clubhouse and grill. The food is super and we always feel welcome there! More information about restaurants and activities are available in the welcome package.

In this area, history abounds with Edenton established in November 6, 1712 and Elizabeth City in 1793. The Outer Banks, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and many other towns are an hour to an hour and half away. You can take a day trip to visit the ocean and avoid the traffic inconvenience and high cost of staying there. Of course, the fishing is great here and boating makes the area even more enjoyable. There are six kayaks on the property. You can rent additional boats from Hertford. You can bring your own boat and launch from the boat ramp on the island. The pier has approximately 16-30 inch water level in the summer and you can tie up your boat or PWC there or use our other lot.

Exactly as We Had Hoped

  • 5 of 5

Our family take two mini vacations a year. This time we decided to do a non-tourist, non event kind of vacation. This property was perfect. The home was very tastefully decorated, and we enjoyed the host's personal art, which could be seen in every room. The layout of the home and the outside lent itself to a "stay home" kind of vacation, yet when someone needed space there was somewhere, inside or outside to go. The outside was absolutely what we needed. Fishing occurred every morning either from the dock or out in the canoe, and the kayaks went out about twice a day. Sitting outside having coffee in the morning is an absolute requirement. Thank you very much.

Owner's Response: Thank you for coming! Alan and I are glad you all enjoyed yourselves. You are correct--- coffee is best enjoyed every morning outside, preferably on the pier! We continue to make improvements to the property and hope you will return to enjoy both inside and out !

Perfect way to relax with the family before school starts!

  • 5 of 5

This home is beautiful and well-equipped for all your needs. We loved sitting outside and watching the sunrise with our cups of coffee in hand. When the waters were calm, the kayaks were perfect for exploring...we were even brave enough to go through the culvert to make the circuit around the whole island! If you like birds, you'll love seeing the osprey, bald eagles, cormorants, woodpeckers, and so much more. A trip to the Outer Banks is just 1 1/2 hrs away and we highly recommend getting donuts at Duck Donuts and having dinner at the Black Pelican. We had two high schoolers and two college students with us and everyone enjoyed their stay. Thank you so much!

Can't say enough about this property ...

  • 5 of 5

Nora and Alan have it all covered! This property was amazing and had everything you could ever want in a vacation rental ... Private beach, kayaks, bikes, long dock stretching over the water, fire pit, covered grill and games, and that's just outside (where we spent 80% of our time). Inside was just as impressive with modern appliances and amenities. In 5 days we only left the property once and that was to pick up food for grilling. Not enough stars to do this place justice! Can't wait to visit again.

Owner's Response: First of all, Nora and I want to thank you personally for such a nice review. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay and it was everything you wanted. We really enjoyed meeting you and your family and you are always welcome to come back anytime you like. Just give us a call. We hope to offer more amenities next year that you will be able to take advantage of such as art, music, yoga, featured films in the new movie room along with limited concierge service. More good news is we just signed a contract with Southern Scapes Pool & Landscape Design and have acquired the CAMA permits to start building the new salt water swimming pool which includes a heater and a cooler. They will be starting in February 2017 which means it will be open next season. At this time, we only plan to rent the entire home out 6 to 8 weeks a year. In 2018, it will be in the May and June time frame. Rest of the time the upstairs will be able to be rented out with full house and access to all the amenities, even if the site shows no availability. Just give us a call first. Once again we want to thank you for the wonderful review and for giving us a segue into letting other people know what is planned. V/r Alan & Nora

Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

I was one of 6 former college room-mates who met for an annual weekend getaway--we had an awesome time! The house was roomy with comfortable beds and a large dining room table where we enjoyed catching up. We came prepared to cook/steam our own seafood but the kitchen was well equipped to prepare most anything (and the owner even offered his steamer pot). Our BEST meal was eaten outside on the picnic table located halfway down the dock--nice breeze, beautiful sunset, and the relaxing sound of gentle waves washing below the pier. Our early risers enjoyed morning coffee in the sunroom overlooking the Sound.

With swimming, kayaking, and snoozing on the hammock/beach chairs, there was plenty to do on the property but we couldn't resist a trip into Edenton. We rented paddleboards for $5/hr (a real bargain), sampled Orange-ades from the fountain at the local pharmacy, and feasted on the local chili, cornbread, and sandwiches at Nothin Fancy Cafe. (We also had great pizza at Tommy's before our arrival.)

The owners have really tried to think of everything. They had lots of information about the local area and a binder to provide all the details needed to enjoy the property. Alan checked on us the first day and even returned on Saturday to give us a boat tour of the Sound and River! We could not have asked for a better weekend and will definitely consider a return trip!

Great Vacation Spot!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a fantastic vacation. The house was even better than it looks in the pictures (and it looks incredible). We had so much fun crabbing and fishing from the pier, even though we didn't get any keepers. The house is furnished with everything needed for a great vacation. We really liked the location and the towns of Edenton and Hertford were lovely to visit. Thank you so much for making this such a memorable vacation.

Great secluded, quiet, picturesque location

  • 4 of 5

The house is very clean and comfortable but the best part is the beach and the sound. The week we were there had excessive heat advisories every day, so doing any in the middle of the day was oppressive, but early mornings and evenings out back by the sound were the best. Although Edenton and Elizabeth City are only 30 minutes away, there isn't much to do unless you venture out about 1.5 hours or so. That said, the quiet and peacefulness of the home and the sound is just what our family needed on this vacation.
