About the property

Volcano Rainforest Lodge - Private Craftsman Estate - Completed 12-2012

The Volcano Rainforest Lodge is a luxury craftsman estate in an ancient forest. GOOD NEWS! NATIONAL PARK REOPENS SEPTEMBER 22! RECENT LAVA FLOWS ARE 20 MILES AWAY.

We are located only a few minutes from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park main entrance near Kilauea summit and the friendly artists community of Volcano Village. Volcano Rainforest Lodge is located in a secluded, private, 3-acre forest. Each room is designed to view the forest and lava outcroppings.

The lodge was designed with privacy in mind. No other guests will be on the property during your visit.

The lodge is a 2,300 square foot, one level, luxury home with three bedroom/bathroom suites, gourmet kitchen, living room with lava rock fireplace, 16' x 20' dining room, and over 1,400 square feet of covered, outside living area (lanai).

The Lodge has Mango flooring, and door/window trim. Mango is also used in the bathroom cabinets and mirror frames. The doors are solid core knotty Alder. The ceilings are beautiful Canadian Pine with Red Western Cedar beams from Oregon. Counter tops in the Lodge are granite. Bathroom walls and floors are gauged Quartzite.

This beautiful Lodge provides all the elements to make your vacation on the Big Island a memorable experience.

The Lodge is like a breath of fresh air amidst the beautiful forest of Ohias and Hapu'u tree ferns; a quiet place to relax and unwind, while being located close to the various adventures in the area.

The Lodge is available for weddings, parties, and corporate events. Please do not confuse our property with Volcano Rainforest Retreat.

Each of the king suites has a Kuerig coffee maker, microwave, private lanai, keyed exterior door, and a big screen TV. The lodge has DISH satellite television and high speed internet.

About Rob Owens

I have over fifteen years experience in the Hawaiian vacation rental business. I wanted guests to experience luxury and privacy in a Hawaiian/Craftsman home, while being able to view and enjoy ancient forests and lava features from every room and private lanai. I built this home to last for generations, with only high quality construction materials being used. The Volcano Rainforest Lodge took years to complete because great efforts were made to spare the forest and lava features. No bulldozer ever touched the lot with the utmost effort being made to protect the many endangered trees and plants on the grounds. The utilities were placed underground to maximize the views from The Lodge.

Rob Owens purchased this estate in 2006

Why Rob Owens chose Royal Hawaiian Estates

The property was chosen because of its location. While only minutes away from the national park, Volcano Village, and the golf course, the home site has a remote, rural feeling for those who desire privacy and quiet. The elevation of the lodge is about 3,025' and the daytime high temperature is rarely over 80. The property is within Hawaiian Orchid Island Estates. The square, three acre lot allows for an extensive hiking trail network exclusive to our guests. The property has numerous lava outcroppings to explore as well as 200-year-old Ohia trees, rare native plants, and 20' Hawaiian Hapu'u tree ferns. Construction of the Volcano Rainforest Lodge was completed in December 2012.

What makes this estate unique

The Lodge has over 1,400 square feet of covered, outside living area. Comfortable patio furniture surrounds the house for guests to enjoy the forest in every direction. After a day in the park guests may enjoy a relaxing rest in the hot tub while viewing the beautiful fern forest and stunning night skies. All of the lava excavated during construction was used in the foundation of the home, fireplace, and retaining walls. Exotic woods add to the beauty and elegance of The Lodge. A giant Mango tree which was blown down in a storm and blocked the highway is now our floor and trim. Come and enjoy this beautiful Hawaiian Craftsman home.

Beautiful sanctuary with amazing scenery

  • 5 of 5

If you are wanting to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Big Island without having to be around a lot of people all the time, then this is the house for you! This house was truly the sanctuary the 6 of us adults needed for our trip to Hawaii!! We enjoyed spending the cooler nights out on the lanai, listening to the sounds of the frogs (once we figured out thats what was making the eerie chirping) and the rain.

Some advice for future guests: go to the house BEFORE stopping at a grocery store! The house was already stocked with spices, condiments, coffee, toiletries, etc.. Sharon truly treats her guests like they are family! Ask her for advice on the different activities to do on the island. There are so many different companies. She can tell you who are the best to use.

We have used VRBO for other vacations. This was truly the best place we have stayed in thus far because of Sharon and the craftsmanship of the house! We would definitely stay here again! Mahalo Sharon and Rob!

This is an Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

This was the nicest VRBO property at which I have ever stayed. The rooms were large, clean, and the entire home was built with high end construction. With that said, what said it apart was how nicely it was decorated as someone has a very keen eye for detail. Needless to say, the next time my wife and I are on the Big Island this is where I plan to stay!

Extremely lovely home, wonderful hostess, not affected by current volcanic activity

  • 5 of 5

We had a really lovely stay here and happily saw/felt no evidence of the volcanic activity while staying there. That should hold some weight because I originally wanted to cancel our reservation because of the current volcanic activity. We stayed in late June 2018. Volcano National Park was closed and there was lots of ongoing seismic activity at the Kīlauea caldera. We spent a decent amount of time at the house and felt absolutely none of it. Air quality was also great during our stay. The house is about 10 minutes from Volcano Village.

Now about the house - it is extremely lovely. My family of 4 agreed that it was the best house we stayed at during our 3+ week trip to Kauai and the Big Island (and we stayed at some remarkably nice homes). The house is built in a craftsman style with beautiful hardwood floors (mango I think?), a fireplace, comfortable lanais, a great kitchen, a lovely dining room with a beautiful live-edge table made of local wood (monkeypod I think?), great bathrooms and comfortable beds. The singing birds during the day and the peeping frogs at night enhanced our stay but never kept us from sleeping well. We cozied up in the evenings with the provided throw blankets and enjoyed some relaxing games and puzzles provided for us.

The home owner's mom, Sharon, is a wonderful hostess. She welcomed us with a tour of the home and lots of charm. She provided us with some starter food/drink as well as her signature homemade banana bread which was honestly the best we have ever eaten. (Sharon, you should start a business!)

The VNP was closed so we headed towards Hilo for our activities. The activities we enjoyed were climbing in Kaumana Caves (bring flashlights, which Sharon provides), visiting the various waterfalls, swimming at Carlsmith Park, talking with the park rangers at the Volcano Art Center, having the best (seriously) shave ice on the Big Island at the Original Big Island Shave Ice Company truck (in Hilo on Thurs, Fri, and Sat), exploring Hilo and enjoying some nice meals there! If there is still volcanic activity going on in the Puna area you can take some beautiful pictures at night by driving on rte 11 from Hilo towards Volcano and then turning off on rt 130 - turn right when you hit the road block and stop at the church parking lot for a good viewing spot. The church (and lava) is about 40 minutes from the house but it's worth the trip.

We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend this home!

Paridise on the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

Our stay couldn’t have been any better. Home is magnificent decorated in a lush tranquil setting. Loved sitting on the porch with a book as the rain fell. Sharron was most welcoming; her banana bread is second to none ! . I look forward to returning one day.

Owner's Response: Dear Christine, Thank your for taking the time to review your stay at our island home. We really appreciate it and hope you will be able to come again. We’re happy to be welcoming John and his friend back this week so they can view the lava flows. Again, many thanks. Sharon at the Lodge P. S. Desi and Lucy, the pheasants here at the Lodge, just had a clutch of four chicks. I don’t remember if you met them during your visit. They’re so cute and the parents are very proud.
