Peace, quiet, cool July temperatures and a great screened in porch

Perfect for a couples getaway. The owner did a world class job of taking care of us. A 5 star restaurant right down the hill. We had a wonderful 4 night stay.

Decided to do this trip last minute during the Thanksgiving holiday and this stay was amazing! For our family of 4 this was the most user friendly stay. If you are a hiker/walker the water falls/trails are very close and the town center for any logistical needs is as well. Highly recommend to check in during daylight to get an initial lay of the land. My eastern NC family will be looking forward to staying again. We loved it and hopefully so will you.

Wonderful property in perfect location!

We have stayed in many VRBO's and this property was the best and the cleanest! The owner was very conscientious and made sure everything we needed was in place. The house is beautifully decorated and it felt like home the minute we arrived. We cooked a couple of meals in the fully equipped kitchen. The screened porch was our favorite. Our son's family enjoyed the house in the evening and my husband I enjoyed the lovely private apartment above the garage. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone!

Absolutely Wonderful.

We had the pleasure of spending a girls weekend at this lovely home in highlands for the weekend. The interior decor was perfect and very clean. We enjoyed coffee on the back porch every morning. The "croft" room over the garage was such a great space as well. This property would be great for families or couples traveling together too. I can't say enough good things about the customer service. I felt like we were renting from a family friend. I would highly recommend this property and we will be back for sure.

Great Highlands weekend getaway cottage with lots of natural lighting

My family stayed here one weekend while hiking and rafting nearby. The updated cottage is very clean and tastefully decorated with many books to read and games to pick up and play. The open kitchen has everything you could need including a grill on the deck (which we didn't use). WIFI was included and worked fine. The best part is a large, screened in back porch overlooking a beautiful, large backyard lot (complete with tree house). Lots of seating and truly you will spend most your time here. The only thing preventing me from giving it 5* is the master bedroom (main house) is an open loft and lacks privacy. That said, this cottage is great for 2 couples (twin beds in guest house) or a girls weekend. Thanks and we'd love to return sometime.

Perfect!

It's was our first time renting Marie's house and it was great. I came with my husband, twin girls(8yrs), my Mom, and my aunt and we were all comfortable and very happy with the place. My Mom and Aunt stayed at the suite above the garage and they loved it, it was very clean, well decorated and really cute!. My husband, the kids and I stayed at the main house, everything was really clean and organized. There is plenty of space for parking, lots of great books, and an amazing cute covered porch !. We love how bright and airy the whole house is and you can't beat the location. The owner, Marie, is an amazing person and I felt so lucky to have the chance to meet her via email and texting. She is kind, caring and really cares about how comfortable we were, she was very fast in responding to my text/email, I would recommend this place to all my friends. Thank you Marie for everything, you are amazing:-)))

Quiet getaway exceeds expections.

My husband and I are still talking about what a wonderful time we had celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary at Smallwood. The home which also includes a garage apartment was nestled among many hardwoods and pines in a quiet but accessible neighborhood. The VRBO description and photos aptly represent this lovely property. We were struck by the obvious care with which the home had been decorated and equipped, and we enjoyed the eclectic art and book collection which gave the home much charm. The home was very neat and clean, and I felt completely comfortable with our 9 month old grandson crawling on the floor. My favorite spot was the screened porch where we were able to relax and have some of our meals. Although we didn't use the croft (garage apartment) often, it was great to have the option to shower there and read quietly while others watched TV in the cottage. The property is within walking distance of a lovely community garden and is very close to perhaps the best restaurant we have tried in Highlands called On the Verandah. It is also within a five minute drive to downtown and a leisurely drive to various trails. I have rented a number of homes on VRBO, but I do not recall another owner taking such interest in us and being so thoughtful. Her instructions on directions to the house and general use of the house were detailed and complete. She truly thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable. I feel very fortunate to have rented this property.

A Little Piece of Heaven in Highlands!

My husband and I enjoyed our stay in Smallwood Cottage last weekend. Before our stay, we were contacted several times by the owner to make sure we had all of our questions answered and to let us know that they were available to help us if any problems occurred. Our stay was booked for two weeks after Hurricane Helene, and the property owners made a special trip to Highlands to make sure everything was in working order and ready for our visit. The cottage had plenty of towels and a well-equipped kitchen. The screened in porch was a wonderful place to sit and read or to take a nap on the large porch swing. Smallwood Cottage was a comfortable, happy place to stay in during a beautiful fall weekend. We look forward to a return visit someday!

Petite, Private, Pleasant....PERFECT!

The Highlands area is a magical setting, and a stay at Smallwood made it even more so. Correspondence with the owners and check in was cordial and effortless. The sylvan setting is beautiful and the home was designed to capture that vista from the large windows in the main residence. Smallwood is extremely well appointed with comfortable furnishings, abundant tasteful artwork, big screen TVs, and a kitchen equipped with quality dish and glassware along with everything needed to prepare and enjoy fine meals along with a glass of wine. The screened back porch is spacious and a perfect place to curl up with a good book on the swinging daybed while daydreaming overlooking the forest. There is great attention to detail provided by the owners in every respect and it shows pride of ownership in the property. The place is well maintained and absolutely spotless--the cleanest of any rental home where I've ever stayed. We utilized the garage apartment as well as the main house during our stay and found both to be very accommodating with quality toiletries and fluffy towels. The immaculate garage was also very welcome as we were there for a classic car show in Highlands. I would not hesitate to recommend Smallwood for anyone seeking a beautiful escape in a pleasant, quiet setting. It was an exceptional stay!

Perfect mountain getaway

We loved every minute of our stay at this perfectly-situated and well-appointed home. It was near town and close to a variety of hiking trails and waterfalls. The host was attentive, flexible and very easy to reach. The screened in porch was the perfect place to relax, and the extra apartment over the cottage was perfect for our young adult children to enjoy. We can't wait to return.

Family Vacation

We really liked this property. The main house is really cute with good windows and lighting. The kitchen has everything you need for basic amenities (eg dishwasher pods, S&P, cooking oil). I really liked not having to buy tons of detergent pods for 2 loads of clothes and dishes. Beds were a great setup for our family. We had a 3 year-old in one bed and there is another small room that we used for the younger boy in a Pack-and-Play. Our daughters stayed in the room over the garage and loved it. We used the baby monitor as an intercom to communicate with them. Brought bikes for them but there wasn't a lot of room for them to ride due to elevation. TV and internet work. Host is really sweet and helpful! We had a great time and would visit again.

Very nice small home + apartment above garage

Most people will love this cute house with excellent location. Porch was wonderful. HOWEVER if you have issues with stairs this is not the house for you. The stairs in the main house are steep. The bed was great. The HVAC was excellent. Make sure you poke are around in all the cabinet s. It took us a couple days to find the extra toilet in the mud room. We move it to the bathroom. The grill had not been cleaned. The downstairs tv did not work but we did not care because the WiFi was great and we could stream what ever we wanted to watch. Marie, the owner, is wonderful

Smallwood provides a perfect setting

We loved our stay at Smallwood. The huge windows allowed lots of natural lighting and great views of the hummingbirds. The kitchen was wonderfully equipped with the essential tools to cook your own meals and included some extras you might not expect. My daughter and a friend stayed in the Croft. They loved having their own space and bathroom; which provided more privacy for all. We loved sitting on the screened in porch as well; especially to listen to the rain. The entire house was so clean; we felt very safe given the current COVID environment. Marie was a gracious host and provided tips on grocery stores, restaurants, and beautiful hikes. When we visit the area again, we will definitely try to stay at Smallwood.

A hidden gem

Smallwood is everything as described and more. It is a warm and cozy home with items scattered throughout that represent the fun times and love that has built it to what it is today. I will definitely keep this in my favorites :-)

Perfect getaway close to everything you want to do in Highlands!

My husband and I and our 13 year old son had a fabulous stay at Smallwood. The house is precious and extremely clean and well taken care of. We enjoyed wine on the screen porch in the evening and coffee there in the morning. Quiet setting, close to town.....the location is the best!! Less than 10 minutes and a straight shot to downtown. We enjoyed dinner in town Friday evening and grilled steaks at the house with our friends visiting from Egypt on Saturday. The kitchen had everything we needed to fix our meal. It was a perfect getaway and escape from the Athens, GA heat! Thank you, Marie, for being so kind and easy to work with!

The perfect getaway

This beautiful place feels like home. Marie is a wonderful host and she makes sure the house is stocked with all you need. You will love the back porch! The bed was so comfortable I didn't want to get up. This really is the perfect place for a mountain vacation.
