Why paul barclay chose Sandy Point
We searched for over 2 years searching for a property that was not jut on the ocean but a place with a private beach which is rare in Central/Downeast Maine. Located 13 miles north of exciting Belfast allows us to spend our days on the beach and dine at wonderful restaurants at night. The property is private, quiet and perfect for large groups.
What makes this House unique
Sunrise from our large waterfront deck is mesmerizing. Having your private sandy beach is practically unheard of in this part of Maine. The view from every window in the house looks out to water or forest. Most of our guests are here for family reunions, weddings or multi family vacations. We have owned numerous rental properties in Down East Maine since the late 90"s and The Retreat House is by far my favorite.

We had a great time. the place is nice and handles a lot of people very well. We would return.
We liked the space and the access to the beach. Also all supplies, laundry soap, paper products, etc. Were provided.
Magical place to gather, relax and have fun on the shores of the Penobscot!
We stayed at the Retreat House for the long Memorial Day Weekend (Fri-Mon) 2018 to celebrate our Mom's 80th Birthday and I cannot say enough good things about it. The large meandering house comes fully stocked with everything you could possibly need from kitchen utensils (and basics like salt, pepper and spices), lobster pot and accessories, to stacks of fluffy bath towels in every bathroom, extra bedding, beach towels and lots of beach chairs, firewood, games, etc. The lay-out of the house is perfect for accommodating a large family or group, with wonderful group gathering spaces (in front of the fireplace in the living room or on the large deck with its amazing water views) and plenty of hide-away spots for a nap or some down time. What we loved the most:
* sharing meals at the the enormous wood table with benches (which more than accommodated our group of 12 adults and 2 kids and allowed for some mean puzzle making down at the far end!)
* enjoying morning coffee, evening cocktails and oysters out on the deck, while gazing out at the lovely Penobscot River
* hanging out on the private beach, which was nice and shallow for the kids (who swam and fished every day), and offered the perfect spot for a fire pit, s'mores and fireworks (to celebrate Mom's 80th)
* kayaking on the Penobscot (where we saw seals each time). So great that we were able to launch our kayaks from the public beach just up the road, and then keep them on our private beach during our stay!
* hiking on the lovely trails just a few steps from the property
It was pure magic for 3 days!
Paul and Shankari are wonderful hosts. Made sure we had all the information we needed before our arrival and during our stay. Thank you both so very much for sharing your wonderful property with our family. My Mom says it was the best birthday present we could have given her. :)
Welcoming home on the water...
We enjoyed the warmth of the fireplace and the inviting tables where our family gathered and shared food, stories and merriment. The variety of activities in the area from long walks, to scavenging on the beach, to local charm along the coast kept everyone busy and happy. Communication from the owners was timely and helpful. We look forward to another visit to The Retreat House.
Thank Rebecca for your very beautiful review and for treating The Retreat House as if it was very own.
Hearing of your extended family enjoying meals together at the large custom table and sitting around the fireplace sharing stories and memories. It was an honor to have you in our home. You are very kind.
