About Amy Johnson

Amy & Carl live just down the road from the Homestead with their dogs, Cinderella and Bee, and a cat, Nyenne ("Kitty" for short). Cinderella is disabled and hops around on three legs, but is a happy, elderly girl. Carl and I usually spend our days at the knit shop up the hill, Kniticality, and are there to answer your questions or help you find your way around the area.

Amy Johnson purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Amy Johnson chose Saluda

The acreage where the Homestead resides has been in Carl's family since 1942. Carl began visiting here when he was 2 years old, coming up summers with his grandparents, parents and siblings. Carl and Amy purchased several family shares to combine into this property for everyone to love. Our wish is that it brings joy and healing to those who visit as it has to our family for generations.

What makes this cottage unique

There is a peace here that goes right in to your heart. Carl loves the magnificent views and the breezes. Amy likes that the property is so easy to access from major roads, but still retains the quiet unspoiled feel of deep woods. Both of us just enjoy watching the trees, wading the streams, seeing the wildlife, and wandering the trails with Cinderella and Bee as companions and as guides.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much, Amy and Carl, for making your home available on such short notice. So peaceful and beautiful. It was a great sigh of relief to walk in your woods, visit the waterfall, and rest in the lovely Homestead Cottage. So Clean. Love the hot tub and the porch and the hummingbirds and the huge trees. Saluda is a treat. Tell everybody to go to the Wildflour Bakery and Meanwhile Wine shop. Thank you for your help making us comfortable and putting us at ease while we waited to hear about our own Homestead. You were such a blessing to us in a hard time. Thank you again.

Cozy getaway

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here for Thanksgiving! The highlight was when Bee & Cinderella would come visit us and our pup. It was a perfect cozy getaway.

Private and secluded cabin with stately trees as the only neighbors

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is comfortable with a “lived in” warmth to it. It offers privacy and seclusion with stately trees as your only neighbors.

We picked this cabin because we wanted a remote, private, quiet place to escape. It is! True, the road is some what rough, but our regular front wheel drive SUV was not challenged by it. A Jeep 4X4 is certainly not needed. The drive may not be smooth, but this is in a remote, private place; not a residential neighborhood in the suburbs. (Some of the reviews made me nervious that it was difficult to get to the cabin. It is not hard.) Although, we drove past a couple of cabins, I couldn’t see any other dewellings from this cabin. We enjoyed a quite weekend as carefree couple, away from the joys of parenthood.

If you are looking for a luxurious resort, this is not the place for you. But as for us, we enjoyed how comfortable, and relaxing the surrounds are. This is the perfect place to kick off your shoe, flop on the couch, relax on the deck, or sleep peacefully in a comfortable bed.

If there was anything we didn’t like it would be that fabulous gas stove wouldn’t fit in the back of the car. :) If you are a person who enjoyed cooking, this is the stove for you. Both the living area and the kitchen are roomy. Don’t worry if you don’t cook, because there are a variety restaurants with 30 minutes drive, including a few only 10 minutes.

The yard outside can handle a makeshift flag football game with kids, or to simply toss the frisbee around. The hike down to the waterfall was rewarding.

The Internet suited my needs, but I am not a gamer. Still, why go into the woods if you want to sit in front of a computer screen. Go outside! Breath fresh air and enjoy the surroundings.

We look forward to returning ... this time with the kids!

Great location, comfortable house.

  • 4 of 5

Nicely located on plenty of wooded acreage. Walks through the woods to the charming waterfall were not difficult for two senior citizens and two dogs. The house is roomy and comfortably furnished. The hot tub on the deck is a real plus. Owners were welcoming and helpful. Construction of a new home nearby was, at times, a bit intrusive, but appeared to be near completion. The small town of Saluda offers some interesting shops and dining options, and more extensive services are available in nearby Flat Rock and Hendersonville.

Our stay was exactly as we had wanted. Maybe slightly more wet but was manageable. Owners were helpful and available when needed. Property is close enough to everything that a short drive takes you everywhere you wish to go. Thank you!
