About David & Allison Dunkenberger

My wife and I grew up in the area and moved back after spending ~10 years in North Carolina. Having purchased the property from her parents, and getting inspiration from the Central Coast region of California, we planted the vineyard in 2007 and began selling wine commercially in 2011.

David & Allison Dunkenberger purchased this estate in 2003

Why David & Allison Dunkenberger chose Virginia

This custom built house is nestled away in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Expansive views and remarkable sounds of silence and nature make this a truly unique property. We want you to be able to experience the relaxing qualities in an all too busy and hurried world we live in today!

What makes this estate unique

Feel like you are hundreds of miles away from civilization, yet enjoy the benefits of the surrounding towns/cities with just a short drive.

Luxury All Over With the Heart of Home

  • 5 of 5

From the moment you cross the bridge over the babbling brook and drive up the long approach to the stately house and vineyard, you feel like you might possibly have just fallen into a movie location. The backdrop of mountains and gorgeous sunsets only amplifies the beauty and luxury of the surroundings. Inside, the house is impeccably decorated and light pours in from large windows and skylights to fill the lofty rooms. Fireplaces keep everything cozy and the whole house is outfitted with every comfort of home. My family and I spent our Christmas here, and the owners even went to the trouble of decorating the house for us. Every minute we were there was special, and the memories will be long-treasured. Thank you for a great experience!

Beautiful Home - ideal for a relaxing getaway

  • 4 of 5

The Firefly Hill vineyard home is spacious and lovely, and met our needs quite well for a family gathering in the Blacksburg area. If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation in a pristine, mountain setting, look no further. Our stay was for an entire week, and our intent was to find a roomy, centrally located place for our family that we could book annually for get-togethers in the Fall. Nice as this place was, we will be looking elsewhere in the future. There are some scenic hikes, but most require a 30-45 minute drive to get to the trailhead. We felt that bicycling the narrow, curvy mountain roads that surround the vineyard would be too risky, so this was not attempted. So to improve the experience for future guests who want to do more than simply relax, we have a suggestion: make an effort to feature the “winery” in some small way as part of the rental package. Maybe provide a complimentary bottle of wine, or perhaps a free tasting, especially for someone booking for an entire week. Also, it would be nice to provide bath soap and shampoo for guests, and helpful to move the router from the adjacent building into the main house. There were some unavoidable weather related Internet issues, but even on clear, sunny days the wifi signal was weaker than it should be. This could be easily remedied with a centrally located router (or repeater). Overall, this house is an absolutely gorgeous retreat for a large family gathering, where relaxation in a peaceful setting is the goal.

Outstanding from Start to Finish!!!

I can't say enough about the outstanding service and the beauty of this location!!!

The event we had on Friday evening was totally over the top!!! We felt like we were part of the Dunkenberger Family (the owners).

The rooms were elegant and so very tastefully appointed!!!!

The house guests are already asking if they can book for another time!!!

What a find!!! :)

Great getaway with friends and family - good mountains, great vineyard, wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were planning our first vacation weekend with both sets of parents. As a former Hokie, my husband wanted to show our families Virginia Tech and just have a good "last summer weekend" get away from the city. Parents already want to go back!

First thing first - the house was absolutely gorgeous! Each room was spacious and I felt right at home right when we walked in- love the kitchen. We stayed in the bedroom with the queen size bed and the really nice waterfall designed stone shower. We wanted to give the parents the two master bedrooms- they loved it. We had a lot of paper products provided and I could tell there were leftovers from previous folks. They had a decent spice rack and selection of cooking ware and all.

Every morning, family was up making breakfast. Chatting in the kitchen and catching up with each other. It was really nice and our goal was accomplished where we were all spending time together, but also had enough space to "spread out". The sunrise was absolutely gorgeous watching over the ridge and also looking at the mountains. It was like a pink sky that morning that just made you feel calm and serene while you drank your coffee. Walking around the vineyards was great and we actually helped them harvest some of the sweet grapes! Fun huh?

During the weekend, we would go to nearby restaurants and wineries-- and even had a tasting there that weekend (we had to schedule that). It was really nice. It was such a good weekend overall. At night we were having drinks on the back patio during the sunset and started seeing all the fireflies flying around (Hence the name: Firefly vineyard).

Just some general tips: morning can be a little dewy in the grass, don't walk around with flip flops (wear close toe'd shoes). Bring a jacket (even when it was labor day weekend, it was chilly in the morning and at night). There's also bugs, so bring some spray. Recommend doing some grocery store runs before. Don't be afraid to ask for a tasting (just have to schedule in advance).

House tips: There's no trash compactor, so throw any food away in the trash before rinsing dishes. Water may need some time to heat up, especially if you're the first person in the morning. Tap waster tastes pretty good - no need to bring bottled water. Use the spice rack.

Nearest restaurant: (2.5 miles away)

Nearest Groceries: Krogers in Blacksburg and Salem are equidistant (~15 min away)
