Overview

About the property

2 Bedroom Cottage 'on Golden Pond'

This picturesque lake cottage (Twin Oaks) is literally "On Golden Pond". The golden pond of movie fame is actually this great pond. With 46 miles of shoreline, it is the largest lake in the Belgrade Lakes chain and the largest body of water in the world named 'pond'. The cottage belonged to my grandfather who purchased it in the 1930s.

It is not unusual to hear the enchanting call of loons on the lake, and we have even seen ospreys perched in the branches just off the screened in porch and there is at least one Bald Eagle that can be spotted on this end of the lake.

Cool delicious well water from our private well offers a no cost alternative to bottled water. The cottage features quiet new ceiling fans, WIFI Internet, HI-DEF flat screen TV with dvd and premium cable service. A huge fully screened porch overlooks the beautiful golden sunsets across the cove. You can enjoy delicious grilled meals from the gas grill in the yard. The 32' long 6' wide dock and landing with a fantastic 5' wide stairway with handrail into the water facilitates enjoying the water for people with limited mobility issues The use of two single kayaks for our guests at no additional cost provides plenty of ways to enjoy the water! The kayaks are stable and perfect for first time paddlers. Take lunch and picnic on the pond! Several islands are just a short paddle away. A mere 10 minute paddle from your dock 'darkest africa' as I used to call it, awaits your exploration . While the name may be testament to the childhood exaggerations of a youthful perspective, it is still a picturesque little stream where you may catch a glimpse of turtles sunning themselves above the lily pads or a blue heron fishing the shallow water if you are lucky.

After a stay at Twin Oaks, your memories will be ready to harken you back to the time when you experienced first-hand "The Way Life Should Be" "On Golden Pond" in Maine.

About Tom and Maureen McAvoy

I was born and raised in nearby Waterville, Maine and spent nearly every day of every summer until college barefoot, shirtless and carefree at this cottage. I left Maine for upstate New York for high school when my parents closed the Elmwood Hotel in Waterville, Maine and went to college at Cornell University. A Navy career took me around the world, but now I am looking forward to retiring back to Maine in late 2016. My wife and I are both retired US Naval Officers. Some of my favorite things to do are kayaking around Great Pond, swimming, walking, biking, playing with our dogs and traveling to see new places.

Tom and Maureen McAvoy purchased this cottage in 1935

Why Tom and Maureen McAvoy chose Rome

My grandfather, Richard W. Begley originally purchased this cottage approximately 80 years ago. I was born and raised in nearby Waterville, Maine and spent nearly every summer until college at this cottage. I have fond memories of fishing off the dock and the puppet shows that Mary Lane McMillan held at the camp next door ("Afterglow") for the children in the area.

What makes this cottage unique

The huge screened in porch and nice landing that you can sit and enjoy the lake from are definite pluses. Kayaking on the lake with the 2 kayaks included with your rental at no extra cost is a relaxing way to enjoy and explore the lake. Island hopping, swimming, walking and biking along the roads and even snorkeling along the shore of the lake or out around the islands are fun ways to spend time on the lake. The lake also offers great fishing having been featured on national television shows for its great bass fishing.

Great Pond, great location, views and vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

We loved being at Twin Oaks in Rome, ME. The property was snug and cozy. The screened in porch was our favorite part - we ate all of our meals out on the porch to maximize the view and fresh air. Kitchen has all the things you need to cook and bake. Everything was in good working order. We really appreciated that the kitchen was well stocked. It makes it so nice to "just cook" when your in a vacation house. The downstairs bathroom is dated, but we expected that. It worked fine for 4 people. There isn't a dishwasher, so it led to good conversations at the sink!

The house is at one end of the pond, so it is quiet. You can really enjoy the loons and the sunsets. We were surprised how quiet the pond was. We often had it to ourselves! We rented a boat for the week and the dock was great. The kids loved using the kayaks. Daily swimming is a must.

The location is great. We went to Augusta, Bangor and Watermill, and of course Belgrade Lakes. The Day Store is amazing for BBQ needs, fruit/veggies, wine and the ever necessary whoopie pies. They were amazing. Like mind blowing.

The owners are very accessible and kind. They left a welcome note and gift. We would recommend Twin Oaks! It suited us beautifully. Thank you!!

Owner's Response: Molly, Thanks for your kind review. We really work hard to make it as nice as possible and it is always delightful to hear it is appreciated by our guests. We may even add a portable fire pit and another 10' of length to the dock for easy mooring of the biggest bass or pontoon boats. We hope you come back next season. Tom

Perfect get away

Overall great. Loved the wrap around screened in porch. Swimming was great off the dock as it was nice and sandy. Kitchen was a little tight and not conducive to cooking big meals for the family which we like to do. Great time. Thank you.

Property was exactly as was advertising and was exactly what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property. The camp was exactly as described and had everything we needed. The property was wonderful, access to the water was great, as well as kayaks and a great dock for our boat. The owners were very helpful and did a great job communicating with us throughout the process. We would highly recommend this property and are in hopes of renting it again in the coming years.

Slice of Heaven !

  • 5 of 5

Can't rave enough about my Family's stay here the week before July 4th. We were looking for Rustic, quiet, peaceful and warm. Exceeded all my expectations .

The cabin was perfect, well maintained and clean. Dock was great for swimming, fishing ( which was Great) and parking the Pontoon Boat.

Finally the Owners were Great! Friendly , professional and very accommodating the entire stay........Only question is when can I get back there again!

Adventures of Contentment

  • 5 of 5

Lovely screened in porch where we spent all of our non-water time - all meals, playing cards, reading, listening and playing music, and communing with the ducks and loons. Kayaks were a great plus to meander near and far in the lake. Quiet neighbors and short walks in the area. Local well-marked hikes were available. Belgrade Village general store had everything one needed in a homey atmosphere. The local food vendors: Pete's Pig, Greek food truck were great. We look forward to returning again with our teenage daughters and our two dogs.
