Enjoy our our charming stone and shingle cottage perched the side of a mountain overlooking the Catoctin Mountain Valley for a get away! It is located only 12 minutes from great skiing at Ski Liberty in the former resort of Blue Ridge Summit , Pa. which was founded as a vacation site for nearby DC and Baltimore families, although many came from as far away as NY because the train went there. It is 5 miles or so from the famous Camp David. It is less than one mile from the Appalacian Trail. It is located in the area of Lee's retreat and the Battle of Montery Pass. It is 22 minutes to Gettysburg.. 1/2 hour to Monocacy, and about the same to Sharpsburg and Antietam. !!! The cottage has 2 large bedrooms upstairs(1 king- the other two twins that make a king on the second floor,) and a double bedroom on the first floor. Each bedroom has a bath. There is a living room , kitchen, dining room and small den. The deck is the best part! The large doors looking onto the expanse of the valley are an important feature of the house. We enjoy dining under the umbrella on the deck, sometimes cooking on the small grill. Our garden is very relaxing and has a fire pit for chilly evenings. We also have a small outdoor hot tub. Our little private lane makes the home a small enchanting estate with the feeling that you are far , far away in another place. The houses on the lane are all second homes for Washington families , except for one full time (house with the snow plow). It is extremely relaxing and we enjoy reading, walking up and down the lane, and just hanging out although we do go to Gettysburg to the movies and to Hagerstown to the Outlet Malls and amazing antique stores. Our favorite restaurants are the Cash town Inn (gourmet in the country) and the Carriage House in Emmitsburg (best crab cakes anywhere~) The local golf course is one of the oldest in America and is a challenge because of its wildness! . The Y in Wayneboro has very reasonable short term memberships for gym and pool . The Battle of Montery Pass and Lee's Retreat from Gettysburg were just around the corner. My husband and I live in Washington and for 30 some years have enjoyed coming to Blue Ridge Summit for the immediate relaxation in another world from the city. The area is steeped in Civil War history . It is beautiful in all seasons... Leaves changing in the fall.. In the winter Ski LIBERTY is 12 minutes. The summer is delightful and spring is awesome. We have made friends there and like to relax at the cottage. Now that the children are grown we want to travel more and thus decided to share our spot !
Slloyd purchased this Estate in 1999
Why Slloyd chose Blue Ridge Summit
Beautiful Vacation retreat- CENTRALLY LOCATED NEAR MOST BATTLEFIELDS IN THE AREA, CLOSE TO GETTYSBURG , WINTER SKIING, APPALACIAN TRAIL. There are many beautiful historic homes in Blue Ridge Summit, but we think ours has the best view and the feel that you could be in another country in such a short time. The privacy is terrific, yet there are families nearby. We love the casual decor and easy living.
What makes this Estate unique
Live in your own private world... a true vacation. Feel miles away yet have shopping and things nearby. View thousands of acres as your own from this mountain lodge. Robert E. Lee and Custer tied their horses (Traveler and ?) to the tree in our neighbors yard as they stopped in the retreat from Gettysburg. The Battle of Montery Pass was fought just around the corner from our house. Here is what one blogger has to say about it. You can veiw the whole article in North South Magazine of Feb. 27, 2010 which has the map with our street!!!
Pool / Spa
We had an amazing time staying here! We have 2 older teens and there was plenty of room for us all to enjoy time together and still have our separate spaces. Everything was clean and comfortable and the location was perfect for day trips to DC and battlefields. We enjoyed the games that were provided and the history of the area. Being from south Texas, the scenery and temperatures were a welcome change and we would love to visit again someday.
A lovely spring trip for hangin’ out and hikes nearby
This sweet place provided a wonderful get away for three friends reuniting for a few days. With three bedrooms and bathrooms, each set up sorta like suites gave us each our quiet and private space. Each room/suite would be perfectly comfortable for a couple as well. The master bedroom upstairs has a fabulous view of the mountains and lots of airy windows. The space in this fairly small house is well laid out.... the one slight challenge for some may be the spiral stairs up to the master bedroom; we had no problem with is. But it affords for a good size and quite comfortable living room as well as separate “library/TV” room. The owners have put a lot of attention into their decorating of the house...comfy couches and chairs, formal dining room as well as a kitchen eating area that can easily fit 4-6. The fabrics on upholstery and pillows have been carefully selected and quaint. The porch, while a bit rough, is delightful to sit out and look over the mountains. The house must be a get away for the owners too as much of their personal belongings are there in closets and cabinets but it also felt perfectly comfortable to share their space.
We were there very early spring so plant life was just beginning to show it’s glory. The side yard is welcoming and flat while the rest is a steep slope. What was a surprise and plus for us was a train track just across the street (opposite the Mountain View side). No, it’s not noisy! The train only comes by a couple times a day and goes so slowly as it winds its way around the mountain that it’s noise is more soothing than bothersome. I loved it!
The owner is really very responsive and attentive to her guests having an enjoyable stay. We appreciated her tips for outings in the area and info about the local history. We didn’t know much about that particular area ahead of time. I’d like to go back, stay here again and explore the area some more.
The scenery was so beautiful. It was a little too chilly to use the fire pit the time we were there but had a blast. My 3 & 4 year olds loved taking walks and seeing the trains pass through ( they never disturbed sleep). House was stocked w a brand new lodge cast iron and everything you needed to cook dinner. Such a Cute place. Will definitely be back!
Beautiful and cozy home. Highly recommend it! Wish we had more time there to hike and explore the local towns.
This property was beautiful! We came for a long weekend to stay with family and it was perfect!
Totally lived up to our expectations, and more!
The house was absolutely charming and we felt at home the instant we walked in. The view was breathtaking and we spent every minute we could sitting on the lawn or deck together.
The only thing on our wish list for next time, (and there will be a next time), is for the downstairs to be available. The gorgeous bar and larger bed located down there would have been a nice addition.
Thank you, Susan, for sharing your beautiful home with us!
So glad you liked it and do hope you will come back!!!
Fall leaves with 30 miles of views ... central to many battlefields. . Fall foliage and orange sunrises on our mountain are two more reasons to visit the cottage. We have the best beautiful mountain vista within 50 miles. Blue Ridge Summit is an historic area which was frequented by vacationers at the turn of the 20th century due to the cool mountain air. There are many surviving homes from this era, along with important civil war sites. Robert E. Lee and Traveler retreated along the road we live on, and the Battle of Monterey Pass was fought nearby. The retreat from Gettysburg by a portion of Lees troops also too place along our road. It is about 17 miles to Gettysburg... a 20 minute or so drive from our home. Our home is a great outpost for students of the Civil War but becuase it is in a resort town has another dimension. On the way to Gettysburg one passes Ski Liberty and the Carroll County Golf Course. Waynesboro Penn. and Mercersburg where Whitetail Ski resort is located is the other direction. The Duchess of Windsor was born in Blue Ridge Summit on the same site that Civil War troops later camped. The little 'Montery' Club golf course is open to the public and is only several blocks from out house. (It is $10 to play and if it is closed slide the moneh through the mail slot!). The house is close enough
to DC and Baltimore(one hour , 15 min) for day excursions to museums there, etc. One can drive through Emmitsburg, Md, home of the Mother Seton Shrine and Basilica. The Mount Saint Mary's University is there and there is an interesting film on its founding. There is a wonderful zoo on Rt. 15 in Thurmont which is about 15 minutes away (not sure if open in the winter) Great for all ages! Shopping is really great at the Hagarstown Mall and the Gettysburg Gateway Mall . Antiquing is also fun at Beaver Creek Antique Mall and Antique Crossroads..about 25 min. Fly fishing is availalbe in Beaver Creek (20 min) Visit Antietam, Sharpsburg, and Monacacy battle sites also only about 25 min. away.
