Originally built in 1937, the Gingerbread Cottage is ideally situated less than a half mile from the Carpenter Street/Highway 1 intersection allowing for easy access to all the sights and attractions on the Monterey Peninsula. The gate in the large privacy fence opens to a stone paver landscaped patio which gets plenty of mid day sun.
Upon entering the home you will find a cozy comfortable living room featuring a thermostatically controlled gas fireplace and a 42 inch flat panel 'smart' television. Or if you prefer to bring along your favorite CD or iPod, listen on the Bose Wave sound system. On your right will be the office/den with a desk, leather recliner and a queen size sofa bed if additional sleeping arrangements are needed. This room can become private simply by closing the pocket doors.
The well equipped kitchen features all new stainless steel appliances including a refrigerator with ice maker, a dishwasher, microwave and gas stove. To the right of the bay windowed dining area is the full size washer and dryer and entrance to the second bath and second queen sized bedroom.
Moving past the dining area is a sunroom/sitting area outside the master bedroom which also features a queen bed. The master bath has a walkin shower, separate toilet area and a walk in closet.
Virtually all Monterey Peninsula activities and attractions are within 10 minutes from the property conveniently located less than half a mile from the Carpenter Avenue/Highway 1 intersection. Ocean Avenue in Carmel is less than a mile away and within five miles of the home is the Lodge at Pebble Beach, the Monterey Wharf, Cannery Row and the Monterey Aquarium, and the Crossroads and Del Monte Shopping Centers. Add a few more miles heading south and you can be at the Highlands Inn or have a meal overlooking the Pacific at Rocky Point with many photo opportunities of Big Sur along the way.

About Bob Froese
The Gingerbread Cottage was originally built in 1937 as a two bedroom, one bath cottage which was perfect for Barrie Hart Froese's first home in her hometown of Carmel while serving as a vice principal at Carmel Middle School. She moved to San Francisco, met her husband Bob and has also lived in Barrington, IL and now in Montgomery, AL but has always kept this home as a rental.
Bob Froese purchased this Cottage in 1980
Why Bob Froese chose Northeast Carmel
As the old saying in real estate goes, Location, Location, Location.
What makes this Cottage unique
In 2011, the decision was made to totally renovate the house and expand it to its current configuration. All that was kept were three of the outside walls and the original roofline - and of course the gingerbread woodwork on the outside of the house. While still maintaining the cottage atmosphere, the house has all new stainless steel appliances, a full size washer/dryer and WiFi throughout.

Better than the pictures!
This charming cottage was even better than it was portrayed in the pictures! It is spacious with a well equipped kitchen and comfortable furnishings. It was a very convenient 2 minute drive into downtown Carmel, however being at the top of a large hill I would not recommend walking there unless you are looking for a workout on the way home. We would have loved a fire pit to enjoy the beautiful patio in the evenings, but that would have just been an added perk to an already wonderful place! Our only (minor) complaint is the bed in the master bedroom is extremely squeaky with the slightest of movement. Otherwise our stay was perfect! We will recommend it to any family/friends that travel to Carmel or the surrounding area!
This property is beautiful and well maintained. The gardens have been improved from last year,
We stay here every year and love it. We like being away from the town of Carmel yet close enough to eat and shop there.
Quaint, comfortable in great location
This cottage is nicely renovated and very comfortable in a quiet but central location. The cottage is super cute and very well equipped- you’ll have everything you need here. We could walk into town and really enjoyed the charm and beauty of Carmel. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, nice, comfortable place to stay- look no further!
Ideal Cottage in Carmel for golf and walking - Family of 4
The cottage is ideally situated within a mile of the beautiful town of Carmel by the Sea. We walked to town (downhill) each evening for dinner and took a $7 Uber back home. We spent a wonderful 5 days and enjoyed all the amenities of the cottage. Having a kitchen and washer/dryer was ideal for my active family. The "boys" (my husband and two teenage boys) played golf every day while I explored Carmel, Mission Trail, Carmel River/Valley, 17-mile drive, and Pebble Beach on foot. The foot travel was an easy access from the cottage and provided a comfortable retreat from the crowds in town. The cottage was very clean, well-equipped, beds were comfortable, sofa bed comfortable, cozy fireplace, TV, Wifi, updated bathrooms, and situated on a quiet residential street. To top it all off, we had great weather with plenty of sunshine and temps into the low 70's (12/28/17- 1/3/18). Perfect vacation! Thanks to Bob and Barrie for opening your lovely home and kudos to an amazing renovation while preserving the charm of the cottage.
Lovely cottage in great location
We were pleasantly surprised by this beautiful cottage in Carmel. It is much larger than you would expect; it is really well equipped with most appliances & furniture being new & of high quality and it is extremely comfortable. It is about 10 minutes walk (downhill) to downtown & although it's pretty dark walking back at night (take a flashlight!) it's great to be in such a quiet residential area.
I really can't recommend this property highly enough - it will definitely be my first choice next time we are in Carmel.
perfect cottage to relax and unwind
The cottage was everything we had envisioned...very well appointed and clean.
