Originally built in 1937, the Gingerbread Cottage is ideally situated less than a half mile from the Carpenter Street/Highway 1 intersection allowing for easy access to all the sights and attractions on the Monterey Peninsula. The gate in the large privacy fence opens to a stone paver landscaped patio which gets plenty of mid day sun.
Upon entering the home you will find a cozy comfortable living room featuring a thermostatically controlled gas fireplace and a 42 inch flat panel 'smart' television. Or if you prefer to bring along your favorite CD or iPod, listen on the Bose Wave sound system. On your right will be the office/den with a desk, leather recliner and a queen size sofa bed if additional sleeping arrangements are needed. This room can become private simply by closing the pocket doors.
The well equipped kitchen features all new stainless steel appliances including a refrigerator with ice maker, a dishwasher, microwave and gas stove. To the right of the bay windowed dining area is the full size washer and dryer and entrance to the second bath and second queen sized bedroom.
Moving past the dining area is a sunroom/sitting area outside the master bedroom which also features a queen bed. The master bath has a walkin shower, separate toilet area and a walk in closet.
Virtually all Monterey Peninsula activities and attractions are within 10 minutes from the property conveniently located less than half a mile from the Carpenter Avenue/Highway 1 intersection. Ocean Avenue in Carmel is less than a mile away and within five miles of the home is the Lodge at Pebble Beach, the Monterey Wharf, Cannery Row and the Monterey Aquarium, and the Crossroads and Del Monte Shopping Centers. Add a few more miles heading south and you can be at the Highlands Inn or have a meal overlooking the Pacific at Rocky Point with many photo opportunities of Big Sur along the way.
The Gingerbread Cottage was originally built in 1937 as a two bedroom, one bath cottage which was perfect for Barrie Hart Froese's first home in her hometown of Carmel while serving as a vice principal at Carmel Middle School. She moved to San Francisco, met her husband Bob and has also lived in Barrington, IL and now in Montgomery, AL but has always kept this home as a rental.
Bob Froese purchased this cottage in 1980

In 2011, the decision was made to totally renovate the house and expand it to its current configuration. All that was kept were three of the outside walls and the original roofline - and of course the gingerbread woodwork on the outside of the house. While still maintaining the cottage atmosphere, the house has all new stainless steel appliances, a full size washer/dryer and WiFi throughout.
Very clean, well-stocked, charming cottage. The location was great. We walked to downtown and the beach almost everyday. It is a bit of a walk with hills but manageable for us. We enjoyed our stay very much.
This darling cottage, nestled into a quiet little cul-de-sac, Was the perfect spot for our sisters retreat. The accommodations were awesome, the location was Convenient. And out of the cluttered weekend city streets . We had perfect weather. Even though this was out of the owners control !
This little beauty tucked away in beautiful Carmel was a wonderful stay! I wouldn't hesitate to go back. Totally equipped with absolutely everything one could desire! One thing we missed was our bed because we have very soft king size pillow top bed and these beds are very firm. It was fine because we slept on the lazy boy hide a bed and that was very comfortable considering it was a pull out, but if you are use to a firm bed you will be just fine! Give this little gingerbread home a try....you won't regret it! We would have given it 5 stars if not for the beds. Thanks so much for allowing us to stay in your home!

This home was adorable and met all of our needs. It is an older home that has been remodeled so there were a few not ideal things (like the plumbing is loud - someone took an early shower and it basically woke up the whole house!) but the pros outweigh any cons. The kitchen is well supplied, there is laundry, the courtyard is lovely, very central location between Carmel and Monterey.
Beautiful outside area to relax with a glass of wine, than go inside to a quaint cottage. The space is all updated with a fireplace and everything you would possibly need in a kitchen. Loved the sitting space behind the eat-in kitchen. The beds and couch very comfortable and loved the master bath shower. Would love to return.
