Private garden, bathhouse luxury!

Overview

About the property

Private apartment with deluxe bath - a perfect base for Northcoast adventures!

This is a pretty and private garden apartment, which comfortably accommodates one or two people. The space has a lovely tile bathroom, with a soaking tub and a double shower built for sharing. Inside you have a well equipped kitchenette, which tidies away behind closed doors, or you can barbeque outside in the garden patio area. This studio comprises part of a larger high end residence, but is fully self contained with it's own private entrance and a designated parking space.

Bayside is a sweet Arcata neighborhood with a semi-rural feel, just two miles from the very center of Arcata and Humboldt State University, and seven from downtown Eureka.

The property has panoramic views over Humboldt Bay and marsh areas that are part of the Pacific flyway for many kinds of migratory birds. Depending on the season, the sound of cows in the fields is complemented by the sounds of thousands of wild geese coming and going; frogs chorusing; coyotes yipping.

There is a delightful coffee house at the corner, or head into Arcata or Eureka to find a nice range of local restaurants. The closest supermarket is a mile away, but venture a mile further to find two remarkably well stocked natural foods supermarkets in downtown Arcata. Alternatively, stock up at one of the many local farmers markets - especially Saturdays on the Arcata Plaza - which offer great local produce and fun people watching. We also have an organic community farm with farm stand about a 1/4 mile down the road.

About Bella Holmes

I grew up in Brisbane, Australia, but have been based in Humboldt County, California, for most of the last twenty plus years.

I first left Australia as a 17 year old exchange student to Mexico for a year, and have since traveled quite a bit. One way or another, that first overseas adventure played a big part in me spending most of my adult life on the other side of the world from where I started.

My husband, Don, is originally from Florida, but has been in Humboldt County since the early 1970s. He's a general building contractor by trade, but these days we mostly work together on our collection of rental properties. We love remodeling and fixing places up and we have a lot of fun creating sweet places for people to live and stay. Most of our rentals are regular longer term tenancies, but we are considering opening a hostel/guesthouse in Arcata, so we are excited to be offering short stay options as well as a fun way to transition toward providing more traveler and visitor accommodations.

We have two girls who are 11 and 13, and a flock of backyard chickens. We are also in the process of setting up a big veggie garden and planting more fruit trees. We love to cook together, drink a little red wine, mountain bike in the forest, and run away to the beach or the mountains when we can wrestle our various projects into submission. It's a good life and a lovely place to live (and visit!).

Our favorite vacation rental, relaxing and luxurious

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at Bella’s and our second with our daughter who is almost 2. She was a baby last time. It’s our favorite vacation rental, not only in the area, but out of all the ones we’ve stayed in in California. We used to live in Arcata and love to visit Humboldt County. We love the quiet country location while still being close to town. My wife loves the bathtub. Bella makes everything easy and straight forward. It feels relaxing and luxurious to be there. The outdoor covered patio was great while our toddler napped and it was raining. We definitely recommend Bella’s!

Owner's Response: The above is a review copied from a different booking platform submitted by a guest who stayed in the same location two days after the previous malcontented guest - just offered a as a counter point :).

Scented bedding and towels offensive but peaceful and private

  • 2 of 5

Would have liked to have known how well stocked the kitchen is! Not only micro and fridge, but also cookstove, lots of pots/pans/dishes/utensils/serving bowls, dish rack and sink.

The place is Wonderfully peaceful, very private, super nice shower - best shower of any luxury place I've stayed. Almost too soft bed - I like firm, but felt pretty good in morning. I did need to sleep with head at foot of bed - box and mattress need to be turned.

Only a small portable heater but it worked and place held heat. No clock. Could use a nightlight somewhere. I am allergic to scented laundry so I asked and was told what detergent she uses which was one I'm okay with, and she'd do a second hot rinse, but I had to stuff all the bedding in a closet because the smell was too much, and used my emergency sheet and blanket and pillow. Should have brought more than one towel too since the towels smelled too much. I paid the "luxury" rate for the luxury of non allergy stay. The next morning I visited a local hotel in Fortuna and was surprised their bedding smells a whole lot less, so I'll go there next week.

Maybe you can advise me of any vacation rentals in the Arcata-Fortuna area that use non scented laundry products?

Owner's Response: This guest was fussy and implacable from very first contact. She did not pay any kind of "luxury rate" at all - just the standard rate for a single night booking. She also called ahead and asked about what laundry soap I use before she made the booking. I told her, and I agreed to double rinse the sheets and towels (which I did) since it seemed a particular point of concern. In fact, I encouraged her to not make the booking if she didn't think that would be a fit for her, since one night bookings are hardly worth the trouble at the best of times. I think it's terrific that the super 8 has what this guest is looking for - this will save other folks from going above and beyond to accommodate someone who is determined to be malcontented irrespective of your efforts.

A wonderful cozy nook in Arcata, CA.

  • 5 of 5

This place was lovely. It was a pleasure to meet up with Bella at the beginning of our stay. She gave us a warm and friendly welcome that made us feel right at home. The bed was super comfy and cozy, the decor was tasteful and clean and we had everything that we needed.

Careful attention to detail was very evident in every aspect of this charming studio from the superbly equipped kitchenette to the towels in the bathroom. Everything about it was warm, welcoming and comfortable. We'll be back!

Cozy, quiet, and convenient garden apartment in Arcata

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a couple of nights in mid-March and enjoyed the apartment and its beautiful and quiet surroundings. With easy access to roads into the center of Arcata and the University we were well situated for visiting with friends in town. The apartment isn't large but is very cleverly designed, and has comfortable and elegant furnishings. With a bit warmer weather that we had during our stay, I expect that the private outside patio would make it feel twice as big.

Well planned, neat and tidy

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just checked out of this property after a 9 day stay. Bella, the landlady, is very nice and helpful. Excellent use of room space has been made with two deep closets (one of which has all you need by way of a small kitchen), a comfortable window seat plus a small dining table. The bed is comfortable. The bathroom is neat, well-lighted and spacious. The neighborhood is quiet and there is a scenic view from the backyard plus a very nice porch up front.

A little further afield, explore majestic old growth redwood forests and beautiful seascapes among the many stunning National and State Parks that Humboldt and Del Norte counties have on offer.

Enjoy the temperate coastal weather or head a little inland for some serious sun and great river swimming. In fact, there are a terrific range of scenic rivers to be found in all directions, offering swimming, rafting and paddling opportunities for all skill levels.

Twenty minutes north is the picturesque fishing village of Trinidad with beautiful rocky coves and beaches to explore plus regular sightings of seals, sea lions and whales (in season). Kayak the myriad lagoons and sloughs in the area to get up close and personal with birds, otters and elk.
