Perhaps the best thing about our condo is the location and design of the resort. It is in the middle of the island, thus it occupies the most convenient location for diving up and down the coasts; and you can look out in wonder at the ocean from almost all rooms save the bathrooms (unless you keep the door open to the master bathroom) and the second bedroom. The ocean feels like it belongs to you, and the sky as well. And even though our condo is part of a resort, Sand Dollar is a quiet, peaceful, and private paradise. We love the choice of socializing with guests and residents or just keeping to ourselves. What a joy to be able to walk out our screened-in porch and jump into the sea at any time of the day or night for a swim, snorkel, or float. Our kids love it here, too. They like to go back and forth from the sea to the pool to the beach and to the condo (usually for food). They can disappear for hours and we have no worries at all about them. What a joy to see them waking in the morning with plans to spend the entire day outdoors using their imaginations, hunting for sea glass, sporting with the iguanas, and playing with other kids in the resort, making life-long friends. They too appreciate the soul-expanding, upward-looking vistas.
Sometimes a herd of goats comes marauding through the grounds of Sand Dollar, and we help to usher them away before they nibble away at the work of the many owners (like us) who take pride in their gardens; and sometimes a few wild donkeys wander through, seeking their own version of paradise.
So yes, the condo has the amenities you will need to enjoy your stay comfortably and amply, but the real reason to be here is the direct and broad access it affords to the ocean, through eyes, ears, and touch. They say you ought to try not to touch the marine live, but after a while the sun and salt and breezes and the dust blown over from the Sahara will touch all your senses and you will undergo a 'sea change,' as Shakespeare calls it, into something richer and better than before. But that usually takes more than a week to happen. It happened to us when we lived here for a year. So come and stay as long as you can. And come back year after year, as some of our guests do. We will do our best to make this possible for you. We offer increasing discounts on longer stays, and we are willing to negotiate these discounts further. For our aim as owners is to cover our expenses and invest in the condo by making improvements, so that your next stay here will be even better. So tell us what you think would make this condo and the life it affords approach the perfection that nature holds out as a model.
And let me not forget to mention how much we like living in our bathing suits or a pair of shorts and without shoes much of the time as we move in and out of our condo. And no wristwatch either: for there are two times on Bonaire, day and night, and two places, sea and land. Life is simple here, but elemental and close and real. It is not for addicts of the man-made, but for those who have the soul of the Psalmist and accept the call of leisure with delight in its many good uses.

About Eileen McFarren
Louis and I are teachers. Louis teaches the liberal arts at St. John's College in Annapolis (the quintessential great books school) and I teach Latin. We have also spent many years teaching outside the US, first with the Peace Corps in Czechoslovakia (Brno), and then Slovakia (Presov), Romania (Iasi), Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek), and Iraq (Kurdistan)! Yes, the kids went with us and attended local schools. We have settled down in Maryland, outside Annapolis. The four of us now live the typical fast-paced life of a suburban family, with sports practices and work demands! But every seventh year we take our sabbatical on Bonaire, where we live out the meaning of that word: rejuvenating ourselves while reveling in nature's riches. We have lived and worked in much of the world over the years, and have seen many wonderful and beautiful things, but Bonaire is the place we chose to make our second home, and Sand Dollar is that home. Our life on Bonaire at Sand Dollar offers a pretty good approximation of what philosophers call 'the good life.' We invite you to find this out for yourselves. It is real. It is not a dream. Every summer we escape to this diving paradise. Bonaire is our favorite spot in the world because of the never-failing, beautiful weather and 24/7 shore diving up and down the coasts--the freest and easiest diving in the world and possessing the greatest variety of Caribbean species according to REEF surveys. We also love being a part of a community of divers who believe in protecting and preserving the reef. We participate in clean-up dives, lion fish hunting, fish surveys with REEF, and water clarity studies. My daughter is committed to protecting all lizards, iguanas, parrots, donkeys, and goats that roam freely on the island. My son is falling in love with wind surfing...kite boarding comes next. We hope you stay with us and fall in love with Bonaire's nature and its way of life.

Why Eileen McFarren chose Hato
Louis and I were fortunate to spend a full sabbatical year on Bonaire in 2009 (and again in 2016). We became residents, and while the children went to a local Dutch school, we dived every site on the island multiple times and made life-long friends. We had thought that a year might be too long for such a small, simple, and quiet island, but when the year ended, we knew we were in love with this unique little place. The diving really is that good, and not only the diving. We started looking at properties on our next dive trip with a very patient realtor, but in the end we bought at Sand Dollar, where we first fell in love with the Bonaire way of life. Why? Sand Dollar is in the perfect location, and it offers spacious living, not only because of the generous size of its rooms, but also because the outside is a fluid extension of the inside. Such is the genius of its design, its unique and spell-binding orientation towards the sea. The view of the sea and sky is breath-taking, and the breeze from east to west is constant. It flows right through the condo. The on-site amenities (pool, tennis, beach) and on-site dive shop (Dive Friends) sealed the deal. We made the right decision. You will think so, too, when you come here.
What makes this Condo unique
Drive up to your front door and walk right into your home-away-from-home in this rightly-named 'Divers Paradise.' Drop your bags and keep walking through the living and dining rooms, out the sliding glass door, to your screened-in porch that opens onto the Sand Dollar gardens. The beach and the dock are only steps away. When you aren't diving, you can relax in your comfortable, family-friendly condo, equipped with air conditioning, free wifi, cable TV, the use of a mobile phone, an assortment of games, puzzles and books, a fully functional, newly renovated kitchen, and all you need to make yourself at home. The pool and lighted tennis courts are on site and ready for you when you aren't diving, snorkeling, wind-surfing, kite-boarding, hiking, kayaking, bird-watching, caving, or biking. You will be glad to tuck into the king-sized bed in the master bedroom and ready to do it all again the next day, when the birds wake you to song and the gentle waves beckon you to the blue! If you dive with Dive Friends, you can take advantage of their five locations for tank drop-offs and pick-ups and rinsing. And ask us how to arrange a guided dive on the east side of the island, where you will see eagle rays and large sea turtles and green morays and schools of large snappers and grunts in all directions!

Very nice place
We had a great time staying at B-7. The location was a perfect place to stay for our diving vacation. The condo is newly updated and has a well-stocked kitchen. We love the screened porch which keeps the bugs out. The dive shop is just a few steps away from the condo, very convenient.
Sand Dollar b7
We totally enjoyed our stay. The unit was large, comfortable and well furnished. The staff were excellent.
great stay at the sand dollar
great stay at the Sand Dollar. This is a nice unit, great location. Pretty much everything you need for a complete stay.
You can't beat the location. Close to the dive shop and the small beach area. Park at the condo door. Nice screened in area, place to dry wet suits.
Would stay again.
a month of seahorse!
Had another wonderful month at b7 February 2015.
Enjoyed the new living room furniture and made a pot roast in the crockpot. Thanks Louis and Eileen.
Outside, there was a seahorse in 12’ of water in front of the aquarium for the whole month. My first seahorse! There were also a couple of frogfish around.
Joined the Monday rum punch party at den laman pier a couple of times.
Restaurants we tried that were new for us included Zazu bar by Bistro de Paris on Wednesday burger night. $8 delicious burgers and free rum if you buy $2.50 coke. They nicely exchanged the coke for fruit juice for us.
Also went to La Balandra at Harbour Village. You need to have made a reservation to get past the security gate. Nice atmosphere and great appetizers.
We registered as snorkelers which let us use the steps at den laman pier for access. A typical outing we would enter at sand dollar steps and exit at den laman pier.
Also did a night snorkel with Dee from the Woodwind. Saw the cutest baby squid.
All in all, a great month.
Great December vacation on Bonaire
First, a few words about the island. Bonaire……If you are looking for vast, expansive sandy beaches, lush tropical vegetation, frequent rains, and a good potential for a random hurricane/storm, then Bonaire is NOT for you. If, however, you are looking for some fantastic, stable weather in the winter (we were there in December) coupled with excellent diving opportunities, then this is IT! My wife, our four-year old, and I stayed at the condo during the second week in December. Throughout the week the weather was a consistent 84-86F with a few, if any, rain showers that occurred at night. Escaping from a foggy and cold-humid December Northeast was thus a delight. The condo…..good and convenient location. Not too far from the airport (a mere 10-15 minute drive from the airport, depending on the traffic), close to the capital of the island, and grocery stores. The location is great in that it is close to pretty much everything, but at the same time there is no audible noise either from the road, airline traffic, or wild vacationers. It seemed like we did not have any neighbors next to the condo, or so it appeared, so I cannot really comment on this. The property owner is very responsive and helpful with any questions. One thing to note, though, a check is preferred for a deposit vs. a credit card or a PayPal payment. Not a problem, but could be a convenience issue for some. The owner also helped me to connect with the DiveFriends shop and arranged a discount for me. The diving on the island is great….so many dive sites from which to choose, and the dive shop goes out of their way to make the experience relaxed and stress-free. After all, Bonaire is known as a diver’s paradise. The rest of my family does not dive, and so they had a great time at the condo’s beach. The beach is small, though, but it was just perfect for my wife and our son; sandy, with calm, clear water, without any waves. Over all, I would stay on the island and this condo if I chose Bonaire again.
This property was just right for our group of four adult divers. The condo is ground level with a screened in porch facing the water and steps from two dive shops; it immediately felt like home for our week in paradise. The unit is as described and well maintained, with thoughtful extras like a well supplied kitchen, gear drying pegs on the porch, reading material and local art. It comfortably sleeps four (the maids rigged the twin beds so that our second couple didn't get shorted on sleeping arrangements) and is centrally located to everything on the west coast of the island. The owners were very responsive and took pains to ensure our comfort and enjoyment by providing information about the unit and the area ahead of time as well as checking in by email a few days after our arrival.
Divers - we recommend Dive Friends, with shops conveniently located along the west coast dive sites including a shop next door to Sand Dollar (don't worry, they don't fill tanks there so you won't hear compressors running all night...) Bari reef, right in front of the unit, is where you will do your check out dive - we saw tarpon and a turtle there on our first dive. (We also did both a night and a pre-dawn dive there; so easy!) We will be back for another stay in B7 in the not-too-distant future.
Sand Dollar Condominium Resort is located in the central part of the west coast, adjacent to Bari Reef, a three minute drive from the center of Kralendijk. Our condo is on the ground floor with beautiful views of the ocean and Klein Bonaire to the West. There is easy and quick access to the beach and dock, just steps away. A dive shop, a swimming pool, lighted tennis courts, a small grocery and liquor store, an ice cream store, a spa and gym, and two restaurants with bars are on site, adjacent to the resort, or within walking distance. Some of the best dive sites in all the Caribbean are minutes away by car to the north or south. Even the most distant northern and southern shore dives are only a short drive away. There is no better location on the island for diving the whole island; and if you dive with Dive Friends, you don't have to return to Sand Dollar for tanks and rinses, since Dive Friends has four other shops on the island for these purposes. This is truly the best location on the best island for shore diving and snorkeling freedom.
