Overview

About the property

Unbelievable ocean views from six bedrooms, kitchen, living, family & sun rooms.

Walk with your dogs to the center of Bar Harbor, but enjoy perfect privacy, right on Frenchman's Bay, with magnificent views of the open ocean as well. Your views include Bald Porcupine, Ironbound, Egg Rock and the Thrumcap islands. You'll not find such ocean views and intimacy with the water anywhere else on Mount Dessert Island!

You'll feel Rising Sun is Heaven on Earth! If, after a week's stay, you don't, then we'll refund you a $1000!

Renting in July or August? It can be in the 90's for an entire week. That's why we have central air conditioning for you, along with a whole house air filtration system. Combine these with our 54 large windows, and the salt air you breathe and the comfort you experience will be worthy of your vacation!

Our new luxury home was completed in 2014. Three floors. Two master bedrooms with king beds; three with queen beds; one with three twin beds. Accommodates up to twelve.

Our oceanfront is quite as spectacular as any you'll see in Acadia. But it's totally private, just for you. Many of the "oceanfront" homes rented in Bar Harbor are on the Shore Path, along which the general public walks day and night. Quite a difference!

And most of the other "oceanfront" homes advertised are on quiet inlets like Somes Sound, or other locations on Frenchman's Bay. Low tide brings mud flats for many of them. View our photos to see the difference!

Central air conditioning is most welcome during the periods (no longer so infrequent!) when temperature reaches the high 80's or above. If this happens during YOUR vacation, you'll love the air conditioning in our home. You'll not find this important feature in any other large oceanfront home on Mount Desert Island!

At all other times, because we carefully designed the house (with 54 extra large windows and 8 French doors) to benefit from the prevailing winds off the water, you'll love the zephery breezes that make the inside air heavenly. The whole-house air filtration system keeps the air pristine, even if all the windows are closed.

And just in case Bar Harbor experiences a power outage during a storm, you'll really appreciate our whole-house backup generator!

Our hot tub is nestled in a rock outcropping surrounded by trees, but with a lovely view of Frenchman's Bay.

If you love to cook, you'll find our kitchen and pantry (and equipment and food) make this the most enjoyable place you've ever cooked. We provide a complete array of herbs, spices, sugars, salts, peppers, pasta, rice, flour, etc for your culinary use, as well as wine and liquor. For cooking, you'll love our selection of professional, SHARP knives, as well as the other broad selection of pots, pans and cooking and baking equipment. You'll enjoy the incredible amount of stainless steel prep space; two large sinks; powerful exhaust hood... and all the ocean views, while you cook.

If you're proficient in yoga, you may be eligible (at your own risk) to use our yoga wall (after signing a liability release agreement).

At night, under the star-filled heavens, an easy walk along our very private road is delightful. Trees line the road on both sides, except for an occasional driveway. It's just as beautiful as any carriage trail in Acadia, except it's just you out for an evening stroll. You're unlikely to encounter anybody else. The Acadian heavens are largely free of light pollution, so you'll find the stars truly amazing. And the peaceful solitude of our private road, equally so.

If you're an early riser, the morning dew, the cool air, and possibly the fox family will share your walk of a mile or so (round trip.). We often continue along the National Park Trail that leads to Compass Harbor, with its spectacular views of the Porcupine Islands. This walk, round trip from Rising Sun, takes about 50 minutes.

If you're here during blueberry season (late July-mid August), please enjoy picking the wild blueberries (many, many plants) from the patch on our trail just above our cobblestone beach. It's nicely shaded, and there's always a breeze off the water, so blueberry picking is comfortable as well as fun. We highly recommend drowning them in cream from the local dairy farm!

If you were to never leave our property, you could easily have your most relaxing, meditative, nature-appreciating vacation ever. And at the other extreme, if you were to explore Acadia National Park to the fullest every day, coming home in the evening to cocktails, dinner and the hot tub, you would have your most invigorating, exciting, nature-appreciating vacation ever...

Though our location is extremely private, we're only a 5-7 minute drive to the center of Bar Harbor, and a 8-10 minute walk to the nearest trail in Acadia National Park.

Call us now at 914.962.4432 to learn more about Rising Sun. Enjoy a week or two of Paradise. And if you have dogs, please bring them... they'll love it too!

About Ned Tarasov

We've been vacationing on MDI since our children were two and four (1972). This is our dream spot, which we bought thirty years ago, and with the help of a good friend, we designed our home to be equal to the very special setting. I was the general contractor, and watched over every detail of construction, living in it with my beloved dogs even before the house was fully enclosed.

My wife selected and modified the magnificent colors on the walls (I personally enjoy the colors as much as the ocean views!); my own unique contributions are 'Notre Dame' (the Entrance Hall named after my favorite building in the world), 'Carnegie Hall' (the balcony designed for its accoustics for classical music), and the kitchen and pantry, which reflect my own design of space that makes the preparation of meals, from simple to complex, for groups small or large, a calm and fulfilling activity.

Our home is fully dog-friendly, including a dog room in which to leave them safely at home by themselves. A 1000 square foot enclosed dog run is being built. We provide dog beds, water bowls filled with fresh water for your arrival, etc. A high quality vet service is available 10 minutes away; and in case of a life-threatening, difficult emergency, one of the country's best 24 hour, tertiary care hospitals is in Scarborough, three hours away. (We mention it because Maine Veterinary Medical Center saved our beloved Amber's life, and if you have a serious emergency for which a 3 hour trip is possible, don't mess around... go there!)

We put out linens and dog covers on furniture for dogs who are accustomed to sleeping with their humans!

Most importantly, we do not allow any guests to bring onto the property cleaning supplies, vaping (e-cigarette) equipment or similar items that pose life-threatening risks to dogs (or human children)!

Why Ned Tarasov chose Mount Desert Island

We bought this land because, the first time we visited at Thanksgiving of 1982, it spoke to our souls. For all the years when our careers didn't allow us to spend more than a few weeks on Mount Desert, we felt blessed just to be able to sit on our rocky ledges and love Frenchman's Bay and the Gulf of Maine.

The photo gallery on our website hints at the natural beauty that'll surround you at Rising Sun.

What makes this estate unique

There is no other land like this, and we've put our creativity and love into making a home for ourselves and our dogs and our guests that befits land that our family views as sacred...

Guestbook comments from the owner

We really enjoy our stay here. The views were great, the walk to the beach was short, and overall the experience was amazing. The bedrooms fit our family perfectly and the kitchen was fun. We had a blast! Thank you so much!

Making Memories at Rising Sun

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a wonderful week with our family at Rising Sun Cottage. The home was beautifully appointed with a decor and color palette that was both artistic and soothing. The views were stunning from every vista point in the home and we loved watching the activity of the lobster boats, the incredible wildlife and how the lighting at different times of the day intensified and enhanced the beauty of the landscape. The grounds surrounding Rising Sun were quite private and we enjoyed the peaceful serenity and sounds of nature while sitting on the decks or outside patio and while walking the trail to the rocky and dramatic shoreline.

The living and dining areas were a perfect size to accommodate a large family celebration. The home offered ample room for all of us to gather together as a family while also providing the space for each of us to have our own individual areas of retreat. The sunroom upstairs greeted us daily with a gorgeous panorama while the media room on the bottom floor offered entertainment for the youngest family members. The kitchen had all the tools and equipment needed for us to cook and serve a very fresh and memorable lobster dinner. Rising Sun also provides a nice respite when the weather is hot as it is fully air conditioned with central air.

The owners of Rising Sun were a pleasure to rent from as they were so gracious and thoughtful.

They went above and beyond what is customary to make sure that we had a fantastic stay at their home. Not only were they available at all hours to answer questions, they individualized their home to meet the varied needs of four generations of our family and provided us with insight and tips with respect to dining and entertainment. Additionally, a birthday celebration was made even more special with their thoughtful surprise. Their kindness will always be appreciated and remembered.

We have great family memories of our stay at Rising Sun. It is truly a special place and a haven that offers tranquility and peace.

Take the dog on a great family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Spent the week at Rising Sun cottage and had a great time with family. House is beautiful and views are excellent. Lots to do in Bar Harbor and Acadia. Owners Ned and Emily sincerely want their guests to have a great experience and offer great suggestions for activities and restaurants. We hiked and biked Acadia, spent time in Bar Harbor, fished, whale watched, cooked lobsters, and more. It was great to be active in beautiful nature all day and then 'come home' and relax in luxury. And it was great to take our Husky, Juno, on vacation. Bar harbor seems to be THE vacation destination for dogs and dog lovers.

Best Place I Ever Stayed for My Writing Retreats!

  • 5 of 5

I’ve led my fiction writing retreats in 15 locations in America and Europe, including beautiful places in Tuscany, Venice, Glastonbury, London and throughout America – Charleston, SC.; Santa Fe, NM; Marblehead, MA; Abique, NM; Wolf Creek, MT; Glacier National Park, MT.; Taos, NM; Litchfield, CT; Pendle Hill, PA; and last, but not least, Bar Harbor, ME.

Rising Sun was far and away the location that my students and I loved the best. The ocean, the ocean views, the sounds of the ocean, the ocean’s salt breezes. The flower gardens. The hot tub. The wonderful, fresh air flowing through the windows (the other home in Bar Harbor I had rented prior to Rising Sun was nice, but it was definitely moldy.) The oh-so-comfortable beds. The air conditioning (it was hot outside for a few days while we were here, and the A/C was perfect!) Our chef loved the kitchen and pantry, which she said were more functional than any restaurant in which she had worked, and far and away better than the homes in which she catered dinners!

A high point was that all my students could shower at the same time in the morning and never run out of hot water! I had never experienced that in any of the other places I had rented.

But best of all, the privacy and the wonder of the shoreline on Frenchman’s Bay, looking out to the open ocean. One woman actually jumped in the water from the rocky ledges, and swam (for a few minutes). Brrrrr!!! Cold!!! But the water was deep, over her head, right off the rocks. Each to her own, Polar Bear!

The women sharing the master bedroom suite loved the skylight, with its panoramic view of the Maine starlit skyscape. And the whirlpool tub and the shower room with its magnificent view of the ocean and Frenchman’s Bay through its two windows.

So, in a nutshell, whenever I do a retreat in America, it’ll be at Rising Sun Cottage, on Mount Dessert Island! Nowhere else!
