Downtown Kyoto holiday lettings

We stayed in this gorgeous restored Machiya (tea house) and honestly, there were some days I didn't want to go out because I felt I was experiencing old Japan simply by sipping tea on the floor and looking out onto the perfectly manicured garden listening to the water drops. The location in Gion was fantastic and quiet; we could walk everywhere in 20 minutes like Nishiki Market, Hanamikoji Street, Shirakawa Street, and Pontocho Alley. 7-11 and Family Mart were 5 minutes walk away and there was so much to explore in the area. Our host Eri was very welcoming and kind, and couldn't do enough for us. She even left us an assortment of ice creams in the freezer! My husband who is 6'2" had to watch his head a bit due to low door frames and he would have liked to stretch out on a long sofa, but the house was perfect for me and my daughters, who incidentally soaked in the garden hot tub every night! I highly recommend staying here for an amazing experience surrounded by beauty.

We really enjoyed our experiance

Sublime experience, from the helpful host through to the location this was more than we could have hoped. Three good size bedrooms, a lovely bathroom and two toilets. Easy to cook and eat and be social as a family. The highlight was the location, far enough away from the big tourist areas to ge chaotic, but close enough to restaurants and super markets and to some temples and shrines we would never have seen if we hadn’t just wondered around. Recommend the Tofu restaurant around the corner. The host was so helpful and always available- including helping to convince the taxi driver we didn’t need a hotel! We used the metro after that as the stop was just around a corner. We hope to be back one day!!!

This place is amazing! It was very comfortable. They even left us a handwritten welcome note and some cookies as a treat when we checked in which was very nice and very much appreciated. The apartment is very stylish and has a relaxing feel. There is a small garden area that you can see from 2 tatami bedrooms and one of the bathrooms for soaking your tired feet after walking through Kyoto all day. We also checked out Sake Cube a few minutes away it was a really fun place! Also good bakeries nearby. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and would love to stay again one day!

This apartment has been tastefully restored, is beautifully warm with its heated floor and has all the facilities you could want. We were offered a free taxi to and from the station which we gratefully accepted, meaning we did not have to conquer crowded Kyoto's metro with our luggage. Mariko met us at the apartment and explained everything, her English being excellent. Our wifi was not working on the first day so she came around within the hour and sorted it out. We walked along very smart trendy streets (they look like back lanes) each night to find great restaurants and were able to get to all the attractions very easily. Nijo-jo castle is within easy walking distance as was the very smart shopping district along Shijo dori. Six days was not enough.
