Historic Renovated Cottage, sleeps up to 6
This 2-bedroom sunny cottage - originally built as a schoolhouse in 1847 and completely renovated in 2013- sleeps up to six people and provides guests a getaway on a 120-acre farm.
The cottage works well for friends' reunions, families with children, and as a peaceful, romantic escape. Writers have used the cottage for quiet inspiration. Climbers and hikers use it as a base for getting to the Cliffs and Mohonk Preserve.
Inside the Schoolhouse, the clean cozy design will leave you rested. Windows and skylights light the great, wood-beamed room where there is a pull out double couch, a renovated eat-in kitchen, and a dining table for six. The kitchen has cooking utensils, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. The Cottage has cable, a flat screen, Blu Ray, and WIFI.
The Master bedroom looks out on the farm and the second bedroom has twins that can be pushed together to make a king. There is an in-between room that has a stackable washer/dryer and an additional single bed. There are clean linens, towels, and fresh soap.
Just outside the Schoolhouse, guests enjoy using a Weber Grill for barbecues, sitting on Adirondack chairs and taking in the farmscape acres.
Depending on instructors' availability, guests can arrange to take beginning and advanced English riding lessons in our year-round, indoor riding barn or outdoors as they look up at the Shawangunk cliffs. Whether you ride or not, you're sure to enjoy walking the carriage trails, meeting the donkeys, ponies, and horses. Amateur photographers will love how the sun lights the farm the mountains, and the animals, etc.
The Cottage is a perfect location to enjoy the Hudson Valley. It is less than 5 minutes to the Mohonk Preserve trailheads and less than 10 minutes to Main Street in New Paltz and to the Village of Gardiner. There is a great variety of nearby restaurants, shopping and fun things to do.

Although we never imagined living on a farm - it is one of the prettiest places on earth. We love nature and never tire of cliff views, the changing light, and the chance to see hawks, wild turkey, deer, etc. New Paltz is a phenomenal place to live with a great vibe in town and nice people who love outdoor adventures, art, and delicious food. We used to live in San Francisco and thought we'd never live anywhere else, until we got here. Come visit our farm. It's a great place to be. If you've got kids, they will love meeting the donkeys, horses, ponies, chickens, and our friendly dogs: Charlie, Oscar, and Olive.
Tom purchased this House in 2007
Why Tom chose New Paltz
The dead-on views of the Gunks. Early morning sun hits the rocks and the day begins fresh. At night we hear crickets, owls, frogs, and in the summer, we see fireflies as night sets. Hard to imagine a prettier place than LaLuna Farm.
What makes this House unique
The Schoolhouse Cottage has been a fun project. We like to make places nice...in this case, we wanted the Cottage to be the type of clean, quiet retreat we always wish for when we travel. We hope that our guests feel at home and enjoy the farm, the walking trails, the horses and animals. The Cottage is a perfect base for exploring the Hudson Valley.

Beautiful cottage near New Paltz
A lovely little cottage in a very quiet location.
The cottage is very well equipped with a quality kitchen, cable TV and washer / dryer and is very comfortable for a family of 4.
The owners were very helpful and welcoming and our children (aged 7 and 11) enjoyed walking on the farm, feeding the horses and playing in the garden.
A great location for exploring the mountain hikes and walks around New Paltz
We rented the Schoolhouse for a girls weekend and were overly impressed. Everything about this cottage was wonderful, it is very warm and inviting. Tom stopped by to introduce himself our first night there and was more than helpful and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will certainly be back.
Thanks for the nice review : )
The Cottage turns out to be a great place for friend-reunions. This group of three came from three points and met, relaxed, caught up and found some fun hiking and wine-trailing. We look forward to their return.
Superlative getaway in nature
This is a fantastic choice for those visiting the New Paltz/Minnewaska/Monhonk area. Here's why:
1. The cottage could not be more comfortable and is really pretty. While the structure dates from the 1840's, it has recently been completely gut renovated. It therefore has excellent central air heating, which kept us toasty warm in every room, including the bathroom, on our January visit. While photo shows a low-slung building, in fact the living room has a cathedral ceiling with skylights, through which you see the tree tops and the sky. In fact, the whole interior is sunny, with windows framing pretty views to the outdoors in every room. The kitchen is small but wonderfully designed and has everything. Last but not least, we all loved the subtle but stylish interior decoration! During the renovation, every detail of the decoration was carefully considered, with lovely art work, comfortable and beautiful bedding, soft throws, and appealing rugs everywhere. A lot of thought must have been put into choosing the colors and making sure all the elements in each room would work harmoniously together. Just lovely...
2. The Farm. Again, the photos do not do this justice, and the farm came as quite a surprise. I wouldn't call this an average farm. All the 19th century farm buildings have been impeccably restored, with sobriety and elegance. As for the barn where one can ride, it is a beautiful, brand-new structure, and spotlessly clean, decorated with all the ribbons and trophies won by the champion horses that are bred here on the farm. While riding is not my field, I would think this would be a great place for serious, professional riders, or people competing at the national level. The facilities seem to be state of the art. However, the owners are very modest and seek above all to communicate to others their love of horses and other animals, and the last thing they would seem to want would be for people to be intimidated by the superb riding facilities!
3. Nature. Last but not least, this is one of the best places I have found to enjoy the Shawangunk Mountains and the beautiful countryside around New Platz. Here you are but minutes away from town, but also in the middle of nature, basically at the foot of the ridge, with a very short drive to Minnewaska state park, and maybe 15-20 mn at most to Mohonk and all its trails. The farm itself is spectacular, with breathtaking views of the Gunks, and wildlife.
We loved having Arabella and family at the Cottage and hope to have them return! Grateful too - this review must be one of the kindest ever. And a clarion call for better photographs both inside the Cottage and on the farm! Tom & Julie
Highly Recommended Stay!
Had a wonderful time staying here with my girlfriend for a winter wine trail tour! Most all major places were approximately a 10 min drive away: Mohonk, wine trail, New Paltz, State Park, list goes on and on...
Clean, warm, character, quiet, all things one could want!
Cozy home away from home!
My husband, 11 year old daughter and I so enjoyed our 3-night stay at Schoolhouse Cottage. It was a pleasure to walk on the property and see the animals. We made great use of the cottage's kitchen making our own breakfast one morning. We even made a batch of Christmas cookies on our last night! The beds were so comfortable. The interior is very charming. The master bedroom is very spacious and the kids room is perfectly sweet. We look forward to staying here again next time we're in New Paltz!
Thanks for your kind review -- Sharon, Sascha, and Madison are a lovely family. Makes us so happy when our guests enjoy the experience of visiting the Schoolhouse Cottage and seeing the animals at La Luna Farm. We look forward to their return visit!
Beautifully renovated 1800's school house.
I would heartily recommend this property. It is thoughtfully stocked, making it easy to assimilate into the space and quickly move on to your vacation activities. The property was very clean, well-maintained, and conveniently located to many sites to visit. My sister and I also enjoyed the opportunity to feed the friendly donkeys and horses on the farm. Tom was quickly responsive to questions and requests. We are hoping to return again next year.
There is so much to do - every day. Here's a brief list:
Apple-picking; pumpkin picking; Art: Storm King Art Center and DIA Art Museum; Brew Houses, wine tasting, a whiskey distillery nearby; Cuisine...there are loads of restaurants to explore on both sides of the Hudson River given our proximity to the CIA, the Culinary Institute of America.
HISTORY: Huguenot Street - the oldest stand of functioning stone houses in America; Hyde Park is home to FDR's presidential library and Valkill where Eleanor Roosevelt lived.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: Walkway over the Hudson - a famous and fun state park for walking, roller-blading, jogging, etc. Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park offer amazing carriage trails for hiking, and premier rock climbing.
It's hard to capture the area in a few words. Safe to say, the Mid-Hudson Valley is a piece of paradise.
