The Poipu Retreat, located at The Makahuena, is a small, quiet complex on the southernmost point of Kauai. Our condo is a ground-floor, single-level, end unit. One side of condo is almost all sliding glass doors. There is also a slider on the end. Adjusting how far these doors are open allows you to control the 'air conditioning' supplied by the trade winds. There's nothing worse than coming home to a place that is catching the late afternoon sun, after spending all day in the Hawaiian rays. You will get some morning sunlight in the unit, before it catches shade from the neighboring building for most of the day. This is truly one of the coolest condos in the complex.
The master bedroom has its own bathroom with a raindrop showerhead over the tub. The guest bath is just steps from the guest bedroom. The bedrooms are well-separated to provide plenty of privacy. The master bedroom contains a king-sized bed. The guest bedroom has two twins, but if you let us know ahead of time, it can be changed to a king, also.
We've replaced the high thread count sheets in the master bedroom with something even better! We now have bamboo sheets that are twice as soft as cotton! They're soft, cool, clean, and green! When the second bedroom is set up as a king, it also has bamboo comfort. And as an added luxury, we've stocked both baths with the same, eco-friendly, crazy soft, and absorbent bamboo towels.
There are sliders to the lanai from the master bedroom and the living room. Chairs and a table are out each of these exits. A slope of lush landscaping next to the lanai has a cooling effect, in addition to aiding the privacy of your stay. Only rarely will you see anyone walk by our condo.
You have a small view of the ocean from the lanai, but you are only steps away from watching the waves crashing on the rocks, and the turtles surfacing between forages underwater. In the winter, take the beach chairs to this grass area to watch the dolphins playing and the whales breaching. Or go here any time of the year to watch beautiful sunrises and magnificent sunsets!
We have a great view of the sea from the large pool area. Or take a relaxing dip in the jetted spa, where the view is just as good.
Since we plan to be here ourselves for over half the year, we have stocked the condo with all the things we, or our guests, might need. All the cooking utensils, dishes, small appliances, linens, and playthings are already here. If you don't see everything you'll need on our amenities list, let us know. Maybe we'll add it before your arrival!
We always hated checking multiple bags at the airport, just to make sure we had everything we thought we might need to have a fulfilling vacation. It's much more relaxing to just bring a carryon bag with a few shirts, shorts, and swimwear. We have a full-sized washer and dryer to get you through your stay.
We'll save you a ton of money on renting stuff. We have boogie boards, sand toys, cold bags, rolling ice chest, picnic gear, a Pack and Play, snorkel gear, tennis gear, beach chairs, beach towels, a beach umbrella, and much more.
If you're a serious golfer, your own clubs probably help you play better. But with my 25 handicap, I could probably score as well with a stick and a rock! If you don't want to bring your own clubs, we have two men's sets, and a woman's set. We've also added a fourth bag. We have enough extra clubs that we're sure you could spread them out to create four sets if needed. They aren't state of the art clubs, but they're good enough for my game. You're welcome to use them. And if my golf shoes fit, you are welcome to use them, too.
This may be the vacation of a lifetime for you, or just another trip to Paradise. In our many visits before achieving our goal of owning a piece of Kauai, we've learned how to squeeze the most out of a nickel. The best part of coming to Kauai is enjoying God's creation. You can spend a lot to enjoy it once, or we can give you some tips on stretching your budget so you can come back more often. Let us know which type of trip you want, and we'll help you achieve it!
While visiting Kauai in 1999 to celebrate our 25th anniversary, we said, 'Wouldn't it be great if someday, when we retire, we could live half of the time in Hawaii, and the other half on the coast of California?' That set the plan into motion. After 20+ visits to the 4 largest islands, it became obvious that Kauai was our favorite. When I retired, after teaching high school business for 32 years, we started to move forward with the plan. Having already purchase a weekend home on the coast of our home state, we searched for, and purchased the right property on Kauai. Now that my wife has retired, after a long and fulfilling career as a community college academic counselor, we are realizing our dream! Meanwhile, we want to share the beauty of our Poipu Retreat with you. Although we live here half-time, we hope to continue to allow people a glimpse of Paradise from Kauai during the other half of the year.

Dan Roton purchased this condo in 2013
My wife loves the ocean! She can sit and watch the sea and listen to the waves for hours. The sound of the surf lulls us both to sleep at night.
We've stayed at 5-star, large resorts that had all the amenities right on site. They are good in their own way, but they were too busy, noisy, and chaotic for us--especially now that we are living here half-time. Who wants to listen to the distant strains of a lounge singer, or piped music all day, every day? We love the sounds of our grandkids' laughter, but the giggles and screams of a few dozen other kids splashing in a humongous pool complex can wear on you after a few days.
We chose The Makahuena because it's a small, quiet, friendly complex, with a good mix of permanent residents, part-timers, long-term renters, and vacationing families and couples. There are always interesting people to meet from all over the world. Or we can take a dip in the pool or spa, both of which are rarely crowded.
We love to watch the sunset together. At this spot, on the southernmost point on Kauai, we get the bonus of watching sunrises, too.
We always look forward to watching the magnificent displays of spinner dolphins and breaching whales in the winter at Makahuena Point.
We have stayed in some condos that were air conditioned--and they needed it! The tropical sun can heat up a place in a hurry! But who wants to stay in an air conditioned place in Paradise--masking the sounds of the surf, the fragrance of the flowers, and the cooing of the doves? The first time we visited our condo with the real estate agent, we stayed for six hours, late into the afternoon. With only the trade winds for cooling, we were totally comfortable. Since we purchased, we've completed several three-month stays with the same impression. This IS the coolest condo in the complex.
We chose this particular condo at The Makahuena because it was cool, private, fully furnished, tastefully decorated, and had a minimum of stairs to reach the front door. (Because of the topography of the property, there are a total of 15 stair steps between the parking lot and the front door.) This unit was also just a few steps from Makahuena Point.
The walk-in closet is large enough to hold all the toys we, or our guests, will need to enjoy the island. Many of the toys were already here when we purchased, and we've added even more. Where else can you stay that supplies all the things you might need for enjoying the beach, the tennis court, the pool, and the golf course? Who else provides four sets of golf clubs and a couple of hundred golf balls?
Since we purchased in the fall of 2013, we've enjoyed making this condo our own. We've remodeled both baths and the kitchen, and we've made quite a few decorating changes that we're sure you'll appreciate. We've replaced much of the glass in the sliders that had become weathered because we are so close to the crashing waves. We look forward to sharing it with you.
Great place! Thank you! We loved hanging out at the point for sunrises and sunsets--the whales put on a great show! We did a 5-hour morning cruise on Holoholo Charters from Port Allen to the Napali Coast. What an unforgettable experience! This whole week we found great views and beaches and sea life. It was awesome! Condo was great! Thanks!

We went to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. My third visit to the island and my husbands first visit. The condo met and exceeded all of our needs! I had stayed at two other condo's in the Poipu area prior to this visit and can say without hesitation hands down the best condo I've stayed at.
We felt right at home and liked that it had everything we needed. Having the fully stocked kitchen with dishes, full size fridge and appliances made fixing meals (if you want to) a little cheaper, having the washer and dryer made for packing easier and lighter travel, Having the beach and pool towels was a blessing again not to have to worry about packing those.
I also liked that it was within walking distance to the beach and Brennecke's restaurant
Another great thing is the view sitting on the benches at the condo we watched the ocean, sea turtles, and sunset almost every day we were there.
The only downfall was only getting to stay for a week!!
When and If we get to come back we will definitely book this condo again!!
Thanks so much!!
The condo had everything you could possibly need. Its location is very private. We never saw anyone walk by except every once in a while someone would jog by on the other side of the fence which is shielded by bushes. We did not see the condo manager until we had an issue with our rental car and he assisted us immnediately even though it had nothing to do with his duties. We had breakfast in the condo every morning with our favorite coffee made on the Keurig! And we found nice goblets for our wine. We usually had sandwiches at lunch and dinner out somewhere. The stores and restaurants are close by. We had a full, fun filled week. The beach is within walking distance. In the condo we found snorkeling gear, beach chairs, umbrella, ice chests. Like I said. everything! We didn't have to buy anything or rent anything saving us money which we used to ride on a helicopter and go on a dinner cruise. Dan, the owner, answered all of my questions immediately making us feel that we were important. We loved the condo! This was mine and my daughters first time in Hawaii. We had a much needed girl's week and we reconnected. We would definitely stay there again! Thank you Dan and Marlese for sharing your lovely condo!!
Had everything we needed and then some. Very comfortable roomy. Good central location for southshore
My childhood friend who traveled all the way from Sweden and I spent 4 relaxing days in this comfortable condo. We loved the location and the sunset views from the point as well as the proximity to Poipu beach.
The condo is very well equipped and we felt safe and secure. The pool and hot tub were also appreciated!
We were more than comfortable and happy with our decision to stay here . Loved the private lanais on two sides of the bottom floor 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo. There was plenty of room to cook, eat, and relax. The winds blowing through the many sliding doors and windows kept it cool night and day. The sound of waves crashing on the rocks lulled me to sleep. We slept comfortably and loved the bamboo sheets! The condo had a washer and dryer, plus all the beach equipment imaginable. There were so many little extra things provided like tape, sunscreen, and asperin, etc. There were even more than enough hangers in the closet and drawers for clothes. The condo was very clean and decorated as a perfect island retreat. Dan took good care of us and even recommended a wonderful restaurant. The condo was conveniently located about 30 minutes from Lihue and the airport and had a shopping, grocery, and restaurant center less than 5 minutes away. We hope to come back to Kauai and will definitely stay at this condo. Mahalo, Dan!
Our group of 4 had a wonderful vacation in Sunny Poipu! We spent much of our time just hanging out on the benches near the ocean watching for Turtles, and enjoying the breeze and magnificent views!! This condo is located within walking distance of two great beaches which we visited several times during our week long stay.
As other guests have mentioned, the condo is well stocked with pretty much everything you will need for a day at the beach. Dan, the owner is amazing and was very prompt with communications and recommendations! The condo unit is very clean and the kitchen is well stocked for cooking meals! We cooked many fine meals at the wonderful BBQ's set up at the complex. I must say, they are some of the nicest we've seen! The pool was wonderful and we enjoyed meeting folks from all over, much of the time though having the pool all to ourselves.
The beds were really comfortable, and the bamboo sheets were great! The bed in the Master does have a "squeek" but we're both sound sleepers and it didn't keep us awake!! If the guest room gets a bit warm, there is a fan in the closet that helps cool it down!
Our memories of Kauai' are wonderful and we're very happy we chose your property to stay for the week. Thanks again for everything Dan, we'll be sure to recommend you to friends and family who may be visiting the area in the future!
Located on the southernmost point of the island, you can watch the sunrise and sunset from the same spot each day!
