Guestbook comments from the owner

I have had a fabulous week. The apt was great. I really liked not having to use AC. I just the left doors open at night.

I love anything to do with water. So I have done the whale watch, Bay Lady Sailing, the small lighthouse tour. Tomorrow at 12:40 I am taking the other light house tour.

I found out I like the ice cream factory. I really liked the book store uptown. I ate lobster at Fisherman's Wharf. It was very good and I ate chowder at the Chowder House.

I went to East Boothbay and was sure glad I stayed here (instead): So nice to walk everywhere and across the footbridge. The homes are beautiful on Atlantic Ave. I like sitting on the balcony and watching the Harbor. Went to the Botanical Gardens and it was worth the trip.

Hope it's ok if I leave the car parked here til I get back from the lighthouse tour, then I will start home after that. As you can see I am trying to delay going home. Thank you so much Tom

29 McKown - What's Not to Like?

  • 5 of 5

This property has a truly wonderful location overlooking the Boothbay Harbor, with restaurants, shops, and tours all close by the front door. The landlord Tom and 4-legged companion Ruthie were very friendly and helpful and responsive to all our questions and needs. We had relaxing days and busy days depending on our mood. We boiled live lobsters on two nights and they were great. We would recommend that visitors seek out the Maine State Aquarium on Southport Island and the South Maine Botanical Garden which we found to be special places. We couldn't have selected a property which better suited our needs for this week.

Just live going to grandmother's.

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was just what we expected and wanted. Lots of room, well appointed, just a door step away from food and fun. Good beds and our own parking slot. We had a great relaxing week visiting with relatives and chasing light houses. Will stay again when we are in the area.

Great location for downtown

  • 4 of 5

Property was very neat and clean and very convenient. Off street parking was a plus, but be ready for 3rd floor walk up to the apartment. We kept the deck doors open every night and never had to use the A/C. House renovation construction across the street was somewhat noisy but only between 8 and 3:30pm. Owner Tom was on site daily and very accessible for questions and recommendations on where to eat and shop. Loved his dog Ruthie!!! The kitchen is small and the stove not easy to cook on, but lots of places to eat all meals within short walking distance. We joined the Boothbay Harbor Country Club for the week and played golf there every day. It is spectacular. Also took our family (maximum 6 people) on a sail on the Sarah Mead, a friendship sloop that leaves from Spruce Point Inn 4 times a day and goes to several lobster traps so the kids can see how lobstering is done. Our grandkids 6 and 10 also loved the Maine Aquarium.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your stay and your comments. Yes - two flights (to floor 3) - but then the views over the harbor are fabulous and most guests there feel it's worth it. I was a bit surprised about the stove which is full sized on that floor (apartment sized on floor 2) - and it's like a lot of things in the building - in perfect condition (practically never used by guests) and vintage like me. Ruthie accepts the compliments - she has enjoyed the guests as much as they her. Come again soon.

We had a great week in Boothbay Harbor. Our host Tom answered many of our questions and was incredibly helpful. Our property was centrally located where we could walk to everything. It was a great week.

Above It All

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had been looking forward to our first trip to Maine for a long time. We were not disappointed. We like to rent with VRBO, and this experience was a good one. We stayed in the third floor apartment. The stairs were a bit tiring, but we needed the exercise and the view from the top is amazing. If I had done nothing more than sit on the balcony and gaze at the harbor, the trip would have been a success. The owner Tom greeted us cheerfully shortly after we arrived and gave us many helpful hints to make the most of our stay. It is so nice to have the advice of a local. The apartment itself is very clean and roomy. We only ran the air conditioner a short while. We slept with the doors open and drank in the ocean breezes. It was quite comfortable. Amazingly, there was little noise overnight even though we were right in the center of town. The sun comes up early in Boothbay Harbor, so be prepared to be an early riser. You will want to get up and get started on the many things to do and see in the area. My favorite thing was the sailboat ride. We just walked across the street and booked the ride as well as a trip to Cabbage Island for a lobster bake. We enjoyed shopping and browsing the Boothbay Harbor shops and eating in the local restaurants. The library was across the street and hosted a local arts and crafts fair as well. We visited the botanical gardens which were lovely. We drove to nearby sites such as L. L. Bean and Bar Harbor. There was so much to see and do in this state that we wished we could have stayed much longer. The only thing we did not enjoy was the whale watching/puffin excursion. It was too expensive for just brief glimpses of whales and tiny puffins flying in the distance. Plus, the boat goes far out in international waters which were choppy and made many people on the boat sick. We would highly recommend BoothBay Harbor and this property to anyone who wants to have a genuine Maine experience. The only drawbacks to the property were minor ones. Get ready to sleep in twin beds if you are a couple, and be prepared to wear wrinkled clothes. Even though the description says iron and board, there is none. There is a washer and dryer on site with detergent; this was quite helpful since there were only two towels to use all week. I want to end this review by saying a big thank you to Tom for being such a friendly and nice person. It was so nice meeting him and listening to his accent. Thanks!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review - it was pretty clear you didn't want to go! The great pleasure of the place has been in meeting people like you - who are open to suggestions and enthusiastic about the place - and our little piece of heaven on earth. The location is the best in town - as I'm told over an over again and you took full advantage of it - and the apartment is quite comfortable - but there's always things I'll need to do - it's an old building with lots of charm (a euphemism for "projects"). I have to laugh about the "accent" comment as I am (as I explained) from Boston and a Mainer would be offended if I didn't make that clear (!). And, mea culpa, there is no iron (I am fearful of fires) and did have a steamer (for those pesky rinkles) - but the truth is no one asks any more. The twin beds are as advertised and have been quite popular with Sisters, friends traveling together... etc... and I've been asked to stick with them (and they're antique frames - like me - so they don't join together well). Guests who want a queen bed are encouraged to rent 500093 in the same building. You both were a lot of fun and I really enjoyed meeting you in what is, in-the-end, a personal relationship between a homeowner and his guests. And you left the place spotlessly!
