About this property

Backcountry Glamping - Hiking, Biking, Reading, Writing, Dark Skies, Rural Fun

The Bungalow is a compact, rustic pine studio apartment for up to two people. The drop leaf dining table seats two and converts to a work space or kitchen prep area for creative meals prepared in the microwave or on the outdoor BBQ. Cookware, cutlery and dinnerware are provided in addition to a refrigerator, toaster, water kettle and coffee maker. Two lighted side tables, wardrobe and blanket chest provide space for luggage, clothing and personal items. Wifi and internet are provided and a small television can be viewed from the dining area and queen sized bed. A washup sink is located on the patio beside the entry door and an attractive and well appointed private 3/4 bathroom is located less than 50 feet down the covered walkway.

In addition to the cozy interior space, guests at The Bungalow enjoy the use of a comfortable private patio. Here, one can sit and savor good conversation and a simple home cooked meal, sip morning coffee or an evening cocktail, read, write, reflect, take in the fresh air and sounds of birds and farm life. As the sun sets, lie back in the lounger and take in the beauty of the oak silhouettes, the changing color of the sky and the twinkling stars which appear as day fades into night.

Free parking is provided in the space designated for The Bungalow. The Bungalow and it's enclosed private patio are located to the right of the parking area, while the private bathroom is less than 50' further down the walkway. Livestock and poultry in the barn and paddock areas adjacent to the parking area may be viewed from the fence and patio.

The ranch is in a remote, dark sky location with limited cell phone coverage. Free range cattle and wildlife are often on roadways. There are no streetlights and few street signs once you are on the Mesa. Black Canyon Road is a well graded, winding dirt road (1.3 miles to our gate). It is advisable to arrive during daylight hours to facilitate navigation and to allow you to fully appreciate the beauty of the area.

Groceries may be purchased at major supermarkets in Poway, Escondido, Temecula and Ramona. A small full service grocery store, Don's Market, is located at the intersection of Highways 78 and 79 in Santa Ysabel and stocks meat, alcohol, produce and staples. Local wines are available from wineries along wine trails in the area. Check websites for location and hours. Several restaurants are located at Lake Henshaw and in Santa Ysabel about 15 minutes from the ranch. Check websites for menus and hours.

Guests staying in the Bungalow have the opportunity to explore the back country of San Diego: *wine tasting in Mesa Grande, Warner Springs, Wynola and Ramona, *hiking, biking and offroad trails throughout the region, *wildflower and wildlife viewing areas, wildlife education, rescue and rehabilitation centers,* restaurants, pie shops, museums and antiques in the historic towns of Santa Ysabel, Julian, Wynola, Ramona and Warner and Borrego Springs, *art galleries, weaving and quilting classes and sculpture displays in Aguanga, Santa Ysabel, Julian, Ramona and Borrego Springs, *casinos in nearby Pala, Pauma Valley, Valley View and Rincon, *glider port in Warner Springs, *Luiseno mountain bike rentals and bike park, Sengme Oaks Waterpark and ziplines at La Jolla Indian Reservation, *Mt. About the host

Hosted by Richard B Macgurn

Host profile image
I spent my whole life avoiding doing anything I was not good at. There was a lot to avoid. To say I was not handy was an understatement. There was no repair or assembly which I could not screw up. Naturally after 44 years of practicing law I bought a ranch and moved to the country. Now I try to do all the things I do not know how to do. Raise livestock, repair equipment and fences, and enjoy the country life. It is better to laugh than cry.

Why they chose this property

Mesa Grande has not changed much in the last 100 years. Life here is slow, quiet and beautiful. The people are friendly and helpful, the wildlife is abundant and the vistas and night skies are spectacular.

What makes this property unique

This peaceful space is my paradise.
