About the property

Secluded Mountain Ranch, Serene, Peaceful, Beautiful & ONLY 15 minutes to Cd'A!

This magnificent and spacious home has 6 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. The unique setting of this home is at the confluence of two streams and surrounded by pristine natural beauty to stir your heart. Like a painting come to life with romantic rock bridges, quaint stone steps and walls, lush pastures, fruit trees, flowers and jade-green ponds; this is a dream come true! This enchanting home is located at the gateway into the vast National Forest. This 150 Acre ranch is surrounded on three sides by U.S. Forest land; 2 1/2 Million Acres extending to Montana and Canada! There are deer, elk, moose, bear, wolves, bald eagles, wild turkeys, and ermine on or visiting this ranch; and we have maintained the property as a wildlife preserve. There are no visible neighbors and this is a place of serenity, peace and complete quiet except for nature!

The two streams are Marie Creek, which has high water in the Spring and early summer, along with several large pools of water and log waterfalls into mid-July. By early to mid-August, Marie Creek goes underground by the ranch. It continues to run above the ranch in the National Forest. Searchlight Creek runs the north-south length of the ranch and in front of the house. Searchlight Creek runs year round and is a perfect creek for children to play in the creek and the pools.

Home is 4,000 S.F with 6 Bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, 2 Stone Fireplaces and a great Western Decor!

Elk Mountain Ranch was homesteaded in 1908 and the Deed is signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, on display at ranch. The center of the current house was built in 1930, and retains much of the charm of that time period. The later additions are very western and rustic.

This family ranch was offered as a Vacation Rental beginning May 1, 2014 for the first time. The furnishings and décor are that of a high quality, Western motif reflective of the love we have for this beautiful ranch.

The ranch is 150 acres with access into the National Forest. You can pan for gold in the creek! You can bring your Mountain Bikes or Cross Country Skis and stay for a fun-filled vacation summer or winter! We do provide sleds for our awesome sledding hill and snowshoes to use on the ranch or into the adjacent National Forest land.

About Michael Dickson

Elk Mountain Ranch has been in our family for over 40 years. My Dad was a German Artistic Stone Mason as is evident at the ranch. Our family immensely enjoyed and loved living at the ranch. We enjoyed foreign guests who came and stayed at the ranch, and it was such a wonderful experience, we decided to officially offer the home as a Vacation Rental. My parents lived there into their late 80's, as it was such a healthy environment. The ranch is now a wildlife reserve and timber farm. We live a short distance away which is convenient for care-taking the home and property. When you stay there, you have the home all to yourself!

Michael Dickson purchased this chateau / country house in 1970

Why Michael Dickson chose Idaho

Elk Mountain Ranch is one of the most unique and beautiful properties in the Northwest. We found it amazing to feel so remote, secluded and peaceful and yet we could commute into Coeur d'Alene in 15 minutes for Shopping, Groceries, Restaurants, Church, Social Activities, Art Shops, the City Beach, or Silverwood Theme Park. In the photo we are tubing on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River which is just 25 minutes east, via Interstate 90.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

At Elk Mountain Ranch you can imagine it is 1906 and experience the peace and observe the wildlife just like the first pioneers did! ....If you'd rather golf at the World's only floating green, that is only 15 minutes away!....If you'd like a 'Cowboy steak' that is so huge you can't eat it all, that is 10 minutes away at the famous Wolf Lodge Inn & Steakhouse!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a family from Kanagawa, Japan who stayed at Elk Mountain Ranch before it was officially a Vacation Rental. We and our three children watched "Little House On the Prairie," and were intrigued with the American West. We contacted the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce looking for a recommendation of a real western ranch to stay at on our vacation. Elk Mountain Ranch was recommended. We stayed for 10 days and it was beautiful, memorable, and the best vacation of our entire lives. The owners even had Western cowboy hats, prairie bonnets and clothes so we could dress up and take pictures. We went horseback riding, hiking, enjoyed the ranch and the easy drive to Coeur d'Alene. It was an experience of a lifetime and we wouldn't trade the memories for a million dollars!!! We still keep in touch with the ranch owners and love them like family!! Thank you so much!

A memorable holiday season.

I think the word that best describes Elk Mountain Ranch is "homey". It's clean, well-kept and inviting, and Mike and Susan do a great job of making you feel welcome. The floor plan of the house is ideal for gathering together in the great room, kitchen, dining room or rec room; or getting away from it all (or each other) in the bedrooms, playroom or bathrooms. The location is perfect. Just enough distance to be away from it all, but close enough to drive back to a major interstate in a few minutes.

My 3 year-old grandson had a great time, both inside and outside. He liked playing foosball in the "fish section" (his term for the rec room), and feeding the real fish in the trout ponds. We all had a great time on the sledding hill and trying out our snowshoeing skills. The dogs loved chasing the sleds down the hill and tromping through the snow during the day, and stretching out in front of the fire in the evening. It was a wonderful holiday, and I look forward to coming back sometime when the teepees are up.

Elk Mountain Ranch is wonderful. It was a perfect retreat for our family at Thanksgiving this year.

  • 5 of 5

The house is described accurately in the VRBO profile. Mike and Susan, the owners, could not have been more organized in providing helpful information about the property and its environs in advance. The setting is spectacular, bordering millions of acres of wilderness. The trout stream is twenty steps from the main house. Two trout ponds are located nearby the stream and are packed with frisky trout. We loved the kitchen (great appliances) and the overstocked pantry. Our group of eight enjoyed ample room for privacy and the oversized Great Room was a splendidly comfortable space for reading by the fire. In all, a memorable experience for everyone. Mike and Susan are the perfect hosts. Peter Doyle, Sherborn, Massachusetts

Wonderful Home - Great location, great for large groups

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 9 have rented many houses over the years for our annual retreat and this home is definitely at the top of our favorites list. The home was easy to find, had plenty of parking, the rooms were lovely and had everything you could need in the kitchen. In fact, if you forgot something, chances are, Susan and Mike had it there for you to use. Susan gave us a great tour of the house including some of its wonderful history and we all loved walking to the ponds to feed the fish.

Great location, comfortable home for large group

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Ranch. It was great for our staff retreat-allowing for comfortable accommodations, walking trails, everything you need in the kitchen. Mike and Susan were great as they showed us around the property upon our arrival and they gave us flexibility in arrival time. I would highly recommend staying here.

The home we would love to have

  • 4 of 5

Elk mountain ranch was a very nice and comfortable house. The property was beautiful and tucked away from any other homes. It was a perfect home to just get away and enjoy some peace and quite. We will definitely be looking forward to trying to come back some day.

We had a family reunion there and every single person loved it. It exceeded all of our expectations

  • 5 of 5

We were thrilled with our stay at Elk Mountain Ranch. Susan and Mike were wonderful. There are so many thoughtful extras that you would never find in a hotel. Even though it rained everyday that we were there, it didn't dampen our enjoyment at all. The children were thrilled with all the pioneer dress up clothes and props, and were entertainied with a pantry full of games and puzzles as well as a playroom full of toys. Speaking of pantry, there was coffee and cake mixes, pancake mix and syrup, soup and vegetables, paper plates and napkins, toaster, crock pots, griddles, electric skillets and anything else you could possibly want. The bathrooms were equipped with loads of towels and washcloths, blow dryers, curling irons, shampoos, conditioners and body washes. You literally don't need to bring ANYTHING except for food and clothes. If you forget your jackets, they even have a closet full of them for you to wear. The house itself is so quaint and unusual, which just adds to the awesome ambience. It was fun feeding the trout and we would have had a wonderful bonfire if it hadn't rained. They provide the wood, of course!!! We are already planning to go back next year. Thank you Susan and Mike for everything. This experience will be remembered for a lifetime by all of us. God bless you both for your many kindnesses. Susan and Pat Price and family
