North Lake Leelenau Retreat! Beautiful Lake Views And Frontage

Bedrooms 5
Space 3,500 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

5 Bedroom, 3 Bath, Sleeps 10 With Lake Frontage And Private Docks

Whaleback Retreat is a great place for a family getaway or a group of friends looking to enjoy a wine tour and all the beauty Leland and Norther Michigan has to offer! We are located on North Lake Leelanau just south of Leland Village. This spacious house overlooking the lake from Whaleback Hill has 200 feet of lakeshore across the street!

Everything you need for a perfect opportunity to be together has been given careful thought by the owners. The master bedroom in the upstairs is a getaway in itself with its comfy king-sized bed, peaceful woodsy views and roomy bath with walk-in shower. The other four bedrooms are beautifully decorated and each have a queen-sized bed. Three of the bedrooms have balconies with seating and lake views. The house has a full kitchen on both levels that allow for lots of room to cook or allows for guests to enjoy some quiet time separately. Views of the lake are enjoyed from the open living/full kitchen/dining area in both the upstairs and downstairs areas that can be closed off for privacy if needed. Lake gazing is required when savoring morning coffee on any of the balconies or decks and while grilling on the patio. Of course, it's then up to you if you head down the hillside stairs, across the street & jump right in!

Whether you are up to relaxing, wine tasting on Michigan’s largest wine trail, hiking Sleeping Bear Dunes, down hill skiing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or snowmobiling on many of the great trails, boating Lake Leelanau or Lake Michigan, ice fishing, sporting, staring at the water or blazing a mountain bike trail in the summer, Whaleback Retreat has it all!

This year around getaway will always make you feel at home.

About Rebecca

We fell in love with the Leland area and knew that we wanted to share our interest in the area with others. We enjoy kayaking, hiking, skiing, fishing and relaxing by the fire.

Rebecca purchased this house in 2013

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great View, overall it worked but not perfect

  • 3 of 5

I'd like to start with saying how great the owner, Rebecca, is to work with! She was very accommodating and always gave a prompt reply with any questions. Our kids, inadvertently, purchased something on tv and she was very patient about that and removed the charges. The view from the deck is AMAZING, for that matter, all the rooms in the front (lake facing) of the house have a fantastic view! We had beautiful sunrises every morning and this was a popular location for morning coffee. The house was clean and accommodated all of us easily. We rented the entire house with extended family and had kids ranging from 12-4 years of age. The driveway and yard are very spacious. We brought scooters/rollerblades and hockey sticks for them to play roller hockey. There was more than enough space outside for those activities. The house itself has an odd layout. The bedrooms that are in the apartment area share a bathroom just something to keep in mind(I didn't get this impression by the photos) and the shower doesn't have a door or curtain. To get to the master bedroom you need to go through the bathroom which became somewhat inconvenient if someone was using the bathroom. The main space of the apartment was very nice and had a larger kitchen than the downstairs. We didn't use this kitchen because we were on the main floor more often and the main deck is off the other part of the house. The kitchen on the main floor is small with very little space for prepping food. There isn't a dishwasher but the hot water is HOT, so the dishes do get sterilized. Might consider bring a pair of rubber gloves for dishes. The living room has a nice big TV for movie nights there is a sectional so for large groups some were sitting on the floor but that wasn't a big deal. Overall the house was fine. It's a rental and most are not perfect the things I pointed out aren't deal breakers. My BIGGEST complaint is the crossing of the M22 to get to the lake. The steps going down have a few nails that need to be pounded in and the kids got a few slivers from the railings. The road crossing is flat out dangerous. It's on a corner and the cars are going 55mph. We didn't cross with out having two adults to spot. There is a guard rail you have to climb over to get to the dock which makes it even worse. The sitting area on the dock could use an update too. The five steps that actually go onto the dock are steep with a rope as the rail??? Still enjoyed our stay but needed to point this out.

The property is beautiful and well kept!! It has a Northern Modern Charm!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at this property with 4 other couples for our ten year anniversary!! It was everything we wanted and more!! The house perfectly houses 10 adults without being in each other's space, but also allows gathering time by the fireplace! Watching the sunset from the dock was simply beautiful as well as laying in bed at night watching the stars from the sky view from one of the bedrooms! This house is fully equipped with two full size kitchens for everyone to cook and not get in each other's was as well as two sets of washers/dryers!! This house has a nice quaint charm!! It is cozy if you want to stay indoors and offers a great deck and fire pit to sit outdoors. Most of the rooms have a balcony if you want to just sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery! This house will not disappoint you! The owner was very friendly and accommodating during the booking! We plan to make this a yearly trip and stay right in this beautiful home!!

Beautiful home & view.. intriguingly large house

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing weekend with 5 couples.. so much room, stocked perfectly for us.. we enjoyed the outside fire pit and indoor fire place.. so much room we joked about staying in the "west wing." This is our 7th year coming to Leelenau for wine weekends and it's our favorite house that we have stayed at so far! Rebecca was quickly responsive throughout the booking and planning process and always available for questions..

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home..

Fantastic place! Highly recommend.

  • 5 of 5

This place provided my friends and I with exactly what we needed for our kid-free weekend. We had 5 couples stay here comfortably, each couple had their own room and plenty of space. Excellent patio and fire pit. Great location for Leland and Suttons Bay for food and to the Leelanu wineries. Highly recommend!
