El Dorado county is simply gorgeous. The Sierra foothills are packed with natural beauty and scenic views. Especially breathtaking are the region's waterways. In the summer, you can raft the American River or rope swing from the rocks into a hidden swimming hole along the Consumnes. In addition to local Jenkinson Lake, Loon Lake, Union Valley Reservoir and Ice House Reservoir rival each other in their beauty. Glass-like water surfaces are ideal for fishing and swimming. Bridal Veil Falls offers spectacular views and is a great place for family photo ops. Seasonal berry picking is also close by- best in June and July!
Fall welcomes the best of Apple Hill - apples and apple baked good galore, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, family festivals and beautiful sunny days and cool nights.
Dozens of U-Pick farms and orchards have many different varieties of fruit to choose from. The historically-minded may also want to spend a day in Coloma Gold Country where adults and kids alike can pan for gold and explore old-town California.
During the colder months, El Dorado county becomes a winter wonderland. You don't have to go to the big resorts to cross country ski, snowshoe, sled or just trample through drifts of snow. Although the weather can be unpredictable, some years has seen snowfall as late as May.
Every season is wine season - Camino, Apple Hill, Fair Play and beyond to Amador County and the Shenandoah Wine Region make for a wine tasting adventure all year long. Unlike the bustling, tourist-driven and often pricey scenes of Napa and Sonoma, the wineries around the county are typically small, family run operations where winemakers painstakingly produce small batches of their varietals. Tasting is free and owners are friendly and knowledgeable. The county's climate lends itself to the making of lush, full reds, light and crisp whites and so much in between. Ask us for some of our favorites!
The slopes at Sierra at Tahoe are only 30 minutes away. But, if nearby Lake Tahoe feels farther than you are willing to go, other options abound!
As a summer alternative, guests also have access to two swimming pools, tennis courts, shuffle board and the clubhouse of the Gold Ridge Forest Homeowners Association, located just a mile away from the house.
The main drag in Pollock Pines, Pony Express Trail, is home to basic amenities (Safeway, CVS, TrueValue Hardware, etc.), as well as a few classic country breakfast spots, an old school steakhouse, pizza and Chinese takeout. The town also has a great bowling alley as a rainy day option.
For the scavenger/hobbyist, a scenic meandering through the surrounding towns of Camino, Diamond Springs and El Dorado will turn up an impressive concentration of thrift stores bound to hold a treasure or two. The Jack Russell Brewery is also located in Camino, a favorite place of ours to pack some food, find a picnic bench and settle in for an afternoon of cards and craft beer. Or, go a few more miles down Route 50 to historic Placerville to browse the many antique shops, boutiques, specialty shops and eateries. The big hardware store on Main Street is reminiscent of Old Hangtown and sells everything under the sun. Go to Placerville for brunch or a night out, they have several restaurants with great food and drink and even live music.
We think Pollock Pines is a great place to do so many things...but we also know how perfect it is for doing nothing at all...
Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: We are a San Francisco family who bought this house when our boys were little, hoping to find a refuge from busy city life. We found it! Our two kids have grown up going to 'the country' as they call it - to cut down Christmas trees, select pumpkins, hold birthday parties and swim, snowboard and more! We feel very fortunate to have this house in our lives and want to make sure it is filled with happiness as many days of the year as possible.
Why the Owner Chose Pollock Pines, CA, USA:
This house has been refinished and decorated tastefully with love. It is a vacation home but it lives like a first home. We love to cook and entertain, and the house is stocked accordingly. As our boys have grown, we have kept their toys so that kids of all ages have some fun waiting for them. Even now, 10 years later, we still find little towns, nooks, and things to do that we never knew existed. This home is cozy, light-filled, private and easily accessible.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our home backs up on a greenbelt, providing backyard privacy and a beautiful canopy of trees. We are only 2.5 hours from San Francisco but, located at the snow line, we are blanketed in snow each winter. We snowshoe and sled nearby, and my two avid snowboarders are able to be on the slopes in 40 minutes. The home has a rustic cabin feeling but, unlike so many dark woody cabins, the house has big windows and lots of light. The small town of Pollock Pines is the last stop before entering the El Dorado Forest, so there is a Safeway, fast food, hardware store, drug store, nail salon, restaurants, gas and- our personal favorite-the best bowling alley. All in town only 2 miles away!
