Newly Renovated 2bed 2 Bath With Private Marina Access On The Harbor

Bedrooms 2
Space 800 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

Private balcony off master bed room on large lot close to harbor

Two bed rooms, two baths with a full kitchen and comfy living room. There is a very private balcony off the master bed room. We have a large property with nice gardens, lawns and paved parking. We offer access to our private marina 1/2 mile away on the harbor. We have kayaks on our dock and a small row boat for exploring the inner harbor. Barbecue grills and picnic tables on our ocean front decks and docks are the perfect place for a summer barbeque. We are located on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island a 15 minute ride from Bar Harbor's bustling little town where you will find, many bars, restaurants and a cruise ship dock. A nice place to visit during the day. Returning to our house for the peace and quiet of the village of Bernard. There is a public pebble beach 1/2 mile towards the harbor. Thurstons lobster pier restaurant is a 5 minute stroll and there are antique stores, our tiny old library and art gallery's all with in walking distance as well. The closest entrance to Acadia National Park is a 5 minute ride on route 102. This side of the island is blessed with fewer summer visitors making the park carriage roads, hiking and biking trails and the swimming in the ponds less crowded in the summer months.

About Carlton Johnson

I was born and raised here on the Island. After college I returned and started Redfern Boat a boat building and storage business. We also own Up Harbor Marina a private marina on the harbor. I can offer local knowledge for restaurants, hiking, biking trails and swimming holes off the beaten path.

Carlton Johnson purchased this house in 2013

Why Carlton Johnson chose Bass Harbor

This house is part of the historic old school house property. A large property where a town school was built in 1930. Over the years I have long dreamed of owning this important piece of our town's history. We purchased it this spring and have done a complete renovation to this house out on the back of the property that was built in the late 70's. The privacy of this back house and the neighborhood makes it ideal for families to relax and enjoy the property.

What makes this house unique

We wanted a nice house to live in close to the harbor. We also wanted a house that was away from the road and in this old neighborhood. Our neighbors are boat builders, lobster men, crafts people. Having a large green area also makes this property a great location for us to garden and find some shade on those hot summer days.

Apartment over a garage. Not as advertised.

  • 2 of 5

We made the best of it. Way over priced. Had we viewed photos of the outside we would have chosen another property. Very decieving. Loved the town and people.

Nice place to stay.

  • 4 of 5

The property is an above garage apartment. Private, unless the owners are staying in the

space below. The apartment is very nice. 2 bedrooms, 2 baths. Washer/dryer was very

convenient. No hair dryer. Enjoyed having the use of the kayaks, even though we only

used one day. Difficultly trying to find them based on directions. Good place, we would stay there again, some improvements could be made, like kitchen floor squeaks awfully bad and if someone is below, worry about bothering them.

Nice place on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island

  • 4 of 5

Very comfortable place to stay on the quiet side of Mount Dessert Island. Place was clean, beds comfortable and owners very friendly. This is a great home base if you want to explore the hiking trails on this side of the island.

Cozy and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were delighted to find this cozy and clean upstairs apartment for our first trip to Maine and the Acadia National Park area. With two bedrooms and baths, and a spacious kitchen, dining, living room area, this was the perfect retreat at the end of each of our fun filled days. The queen sized beds were very comfortable. We were surrounded by the beautiful Maine mountains, Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse was just a few miles away, Acadia National Park was an easy drive, there were several hikes along the bay within a couple of miles, and when we wanted to eat out it was a 1/2 mile walk or drive to Thurston's, where we could watch lobstermen unload freshly caught lobster while we ate their spectacular lobster rolls and haddock chowder fresh from the sea. Thanks Carlton and Kathy. We will be back!

Quiet Side@ The Nest

  • 4 of 5

My husband & I stayed at The Nest for our Nephew's wedding in Bar Harbor. It was perfect for him & I, and really didn't want to leave for home. The owners are very nice & he even let us use his kayak, which we enjoyed kayaking by his marina/dock. The Nest was not too close & not too far from busy Bar Harbor town. We actually loved the little towns/island (Bass Harbor, Mt Desert Island) we passed by on daily basis. These little towns are so quaint & charming, you get to meet the locals & try their fresh, home made blue berry or strawberry rhubarb pies. If you get to meet or see the owners-Carlton & Kathy, they will recommend some places you should try. So don't hesitate to ask owners with any questions or concerns. Thank you Carlton & Kathy, oh yeah Liam too for a wonderful vacation.

New Favorite on Mt Desert Island

  • 5 of 5

Our accommodations were comfortable and as described. Our hosts were friendly and easy to reach. We had use of the private marina and dock on Bass Harbor. This was the most relaxing spot for sipping wine and enjoying harbor views. our first night there we meet friendly local folks and watched fireworks from their dock. We enjoyed great restaurants minutes from our place without driving over to very crowded Bar Harbor. We will definitely return!

This completely renovated house is in the village of Bernard. Antique shops, Thurstons lobster pier restaurant, a town waterfront area, and a long heritage of lobster fishing familes make our little village quaint and quiet.

Bass Harbor is the harbor for our town of Tremont where all of the yachts and mostly lobster boats have moorings. We also own the private marina at the head of the harbor .We have around 20 boats tie up here and you will enjoy access to the barbeque grills, docks, decks and our kayaks and row boat on the dock. You can explore the inner harbor by boat!
