Staffed Villa - enjoy yourself! Unmatched Ocean-Mountain Views! Pool! Families!

Bedrooms 4
Space 2,950 sq. ft.
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 5 - 7 nights

About the property

La Paila is unique among most of the villas you will find!

-- broad panoramic views of the Pacific ocean are unparalleled. The house is set at one of highest elevations looking into Samara bay and valley offering dramatic views. The sky and light change throughout the day finishing often in spectacular sunsets over the Pacific.

-- staff will prepare meals, clean house daily and do laundry! The pool and grounds are professionally maintained. Relax and enjoy yourself! Staff live in a separate house on the property providing security and availability but also as much privacy as you want.

-- La Paila is designed with a huge open air living room that contains dining, sitting, entertainment and game areas. It boasts no walls so that you are directly connected to the views, breeze and nature! (All four bedrooms are secure and air-conditioned).

-- La Paila is very private, tranquil and quiet. We have only two close neighbors neither of whose houses can be seen.

-- designed in the colonial Costa Rican style of architecture, La Paila is appointed with art and artifacts that celebrate Tico and Guanacaste culture. The furniture is mostly locally made from tropical hardwoods. The staff is Tico and speaks Spanish. Immerse yourselves a bit in Costa Rica!

For your entertainment there is satellite TV with VCR/DVD, Bose stereo (with Ipod hookup) and free WiFi. But you can also laze in the hammock or lounge in the pool! We also have ping pong and backgammon tables and other board games, a volleyball/badminton court, darts and horseshoes! Take the boogie boards with you to the beach or use in the pool!

Nature abounds all around: flocks of parrots fly by each morning and evening, howler and capuchin monkeys will visit the trees, and maybe you'll see a coatimundi! Mangos fall off the backyard trees from May to August.

The sunsets can be stunning but also look for the Milky Way stretching across the sky, fireballs, green flashes, moon rings and rainbows!

Use the villa as a secluded retreat for pure R & R or as a home base for day trips. The daily destination for most?: just five minutes away by car is the iconic, palm lined, two mile-long Playa Carrillo (Carrillo beach), a certified 'blue flag' beach of Costa Rica (means it is safe and clean)! It offers unparalleled beach strolls, jogging, swimming and picnics. Horseback riding is available on several beaches. Go deep sea fishing for marlin, tuna, swordfish and mahi-mahi. Turtle watching is at nearby Playa Grande and Playa Langosta. Snorkeling. Zip line through local jungle canopies. Surfing lessons on the bucket list? Dine out in nearby Samara and Carrillo at numerous fine but casual restaurants. Explore the surrounding teak plantation. There is a small zoo in Carrillo and a crocodile to see. To the south, enjoy lunch or golf at Punta Islita, check out the macaw (parrot) reservation and explore Camaronal, a national wildlife refuge. You will not run out of things to do!

About Andy and Christine Durham

The owners are a husband and wife...she an architect and he a landscape architect. We manage the house ourselves -- not through a third party -- and make frequent visits to maintain and improve it.

Andy and Christine Durham purchased this villa in 2014

Why Andy and Christine Durham chose Costa Rica

The property has been in one family since construction. The site was selected for its panoramic views of the Pacific but also the cooler air and breezes provided thanks to its elevation. It faces directly west for sunset views year round. With virtually no light pollution, the night skies can be spectacular too. You can see as many as four bays from the pool terrace but the primary view is of Playa Samara and the town of Samara -- at night Samara's lights glisten gently in the distance.

Tico flavor! The house was designed by a Costa Rican architect in the Spanish hacienda style. Our staff is Tico so you'll be closer to Tico cooking and Spanish language at La Paila. The house is appointed with Tican artifacts and art: guaitil pottery, sugar-cauldrons, a Sarchi cart and ox yokes, and more. Immerse yourself a bit!

Families welcome! Dogs OK.

Guestbook comments from the owner

La Paila is one of the most beautiful places I have ever had the pleasure to visit. The Villa is open and inviting high up on the mountainside overlooking the Pacific. The view is spectacular. The villa comes not only with a wonderful women, Luz, who prepares your meals, her husband Gilbert, who attends to everything else, but also a charming black lab named Perla -- all of whom made us feel at home. There are a gadzillion things to do. We rode horses to the waterfalls. We zipped through the jungle and soaked in the sun and sand. This is a treasure. Don't miss out!

The house is located in a perfect area . Lots of things to see and do! Mary Lou ( our chef, house leader, now friend ) was wonderful and part of what Costa Rica has to offer. Always a smile always willing to please! I highly recommend a stay here and I can only hope my review doesn't slow or impact our return !

A true taste of Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

What a super experience! My family truly enjoyed everything about La Paila. The house was perfect for families with young children and teenagers. The best part of staying at La Paila was Marilu...she is amazing! She made everyone feel welcome and treated us so nicely. It was wonderful to have our meals made for us so we could enjoy more time at the beaches and pool. An added bonus was trying to hold conversations with Marilu in Spanish. Being at La Paila, we genuinely felt like we were in a different was very authentic. Also, the views from the property are stunning. We spent a lot of time gazing out at the Pacific Ocean while our kids enjoyed being able to jump in the pool at anytime of the day. The house is located near two exceptional beaches - Playa Carrillo and Samara. They are both a short drive away and are good for swimming. We highly recommend La Paila and hope to return there one day ourselves.

Great House with an Excellent Views and Excellent Staff

  • 5 of 5

Wow! Where do we start? La Paila is incredible! We had never stayed at a "staffed" home and we really enjoyed visiting with Marilu and with the owners Andy and Christine (who live in the USA). They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and enjoyed our vacation. Just about every morning, we watched monkeys eating mango's from the tree in the backyard of La Paila. The pool is great and has a great view. Each bedroom has A/C and their are two masters (one upstairs and one downstairs). There are two other bedrooms as well. We let Marilu cook for us for a few dinners and we had a few in town (i.e. Samara). Samara is about 10 mins away. Excellent food. Andy and Christina send a "pre-visit" sheet that helps explains the house and restaurants. Very nice to have!.We spent two afternoons on the beach in Samara at "Gusto Beach". They have "wifi" so the daughter liked that area! La Paila also has "wifi" which was nice. Visiting Costa Rica is a like being in a Jurassic Park movie. La Paila is an "open air" house that is beautifully constructed. If you have a problem with bugs or dont like wearing bug spray, I would not visit Costa Rica. La Paila gives you an opportunity to enjoy Costa Rica as it should be with the added benefit of closing the doors at night and turning on the A/C. All bedroom doors have locks and Marilu watches the home very closely. No problems with security even though it is an open air home. It was about a two hour drive from Liberia airport and I would suggest a 4WD vehicle. There are lots of dirt roads. I jogged every morning on Playa Carrillo. Beautiful! The "Polizicia" got used to seeing me every morning and waved. They even pulled up beside me and asked me if "I was enjoying paradise". My daughter and wife both loved it as well. We really enjoyed read the guest books and the history of La Paila as it was being constructed.

Book it! Enjoy La Paila as the Dr. would have loved you too.

Beautiful Views, Perfect Pool, & Amazing Beach

  • 5 of 5

La Paila has gorgeous views and the pool is great for both adults and children! My husband is Costa Rican and I have been visiting Costa Rica for the last 20 years so we've seen a lot of the country. Playa Carrillo is one of the few beaches which has not been developed and is as pristine and beautiful as it was 20 years ago! It is a great beach for couples and families and is never too crowded. If you want to get away from it all, and just rest and relax, La Paila and Playa Carrillo are perfect.

We reserved La Paila for 8 mights at the end of July, 2015 and had the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation we have ever enjoyed. The staff is attentive to your every wish, including privacy. Luz keeps the house spotless and her husband, Gilbert, keeps the grounds and pool and all maintenance needs better than you would have at home. The kitchen is fully equipped and we enjoyed the luxury of cooking for ourselves and experimenting with making "Tico" traditional dishes. Luz is available to cook any meals you like if you don't wish to play in the kitchen, and we were delighted with the tasty local fare she and Gilbert prepared for us. The owners were also a delight to deal with and accommodated every wish we had. If you love beautiful surroundings and accommodating hosts and staff, La Paila is a must for your vacation plans near the most beautiful beach in Costa Rica. Did I mention the mango trees in the yard? Fresh mangoes daily. We even made mango ice cream. I promised Luz I would send heer the recipe.

We loved every second of our stay at La Paila. We were there with our two boys, ages 6 & 9 and our parents who are in their 70's. The open air layout of the house was so awesome - the temps were in the 90's all week, but it was never hot - breezes everywhere. The drive up to the house reminds you that you're heading to a spot away from it all. We loved being away from town and the drive down to the beach at Carrillo was easy when our boys wanted to spend time on the beach. The views of the ocean are incredible, we could hear monkeys throughout the week, and the house and pool made our stay different than being at a hotel. During our week, we took an ecological hike, a dolphin-watching tour, ziplined, and the boys took surf lessons - all of that was within a 10 minute drive. We didn't eat too many meals at the house because we wanted to try different restaurants in Samara and Carrillo, but we had breakfast there each day and two dinners. The caretakers, Luz and Gilbert, were attentive and friendly. We loved La Paila - a home off the beaten path of a town that's off the beaten path nowadays in CR.
