La Paila is unique among most of the villas you will find!
-- broad panoramic views of the Pacific ocean are unparalleled. The house is set at one of highest elevations looking into Samara bay and valley offering dramatic views. The sky and light change throughout the day finishing often in spectacular sunsets over the Pacific.
-- staff will prepare meals, clean house daily and do laundry! The pool and grounds are professionally maintained. Relax and enjoy yourself! Staff live in a separate house on the property providing security and availability but also as much privacy as you want.
-- La Paila is designed with a huge open air living room that contains dining, sitting, entertainment and game areas. It boasts no walls so that you are directly connected to the views, breeze and nature! (All four bedrooms are secure and air-conditioned).
-- La Paila is very private, tranquil and quiet. We have only two close neighbors neither of whose houses can be seen.
-- designed in the colonial Costa Rican style of architecture, La Paila is appointed with art and artifacts that celebrate Tico and Guanacaste culture. The furniture is mostly locally made from tropical hardwoods. The staff is Tico and speaks Spanish. Immerse yourselves a bit in Costa Rica!
For your entertainment there is satellite TV with VCR/DVD, Bose stereo (with Ipod hookup) and free WiFi. But you can also laze in the hammock or lounge in the pool! We also have ping pong and backgammon tables and other board games, a volleyball/badminton court, darts and horseshoes! Take the boogie boards with you to the beach or use in the pool!
Nature abounds all around: flocks of parrots fly by each morning and evening, howler and capuchin monkeys will visit the trees, and maybe you'll see a coatimundi! Mangos fall off the backyard trees from May to August.
The sunsets can be stunning but also look for the Milky Way stretching across the sky, fireballs, green flashes, moon rings and rainbows!
Use the villa as a secluded retreat for pure R & R or as a home base for day trips. The daily destination for most?: just five minutes away by car is the iconic, palm lined, two mile-long Playa Carrillo (Carrillo beach), a certified 'blue flag' beach of Costa Rica (means it is safe and clean)! It offers unparalleled beach strolls, jogging, swimming and picnics. Horseback riding is available on several beaches. Go deep sea fishing for marlin, tuna, swordfish and mahi-mahi. Turtle watching is at nearby Playa Grande and Playa Langosta. Snorkeling. Zip line through local jungle canopies. Surfing lessons on the bucket list? Dine out in nearby Samara and Carrillo at numerous fine but casual restaurants. Explore the surrounding teak plantation. There is a small zoo in Carrillo and a crocodile to see. To the south, enjoy lunch or golf at Punta Islita, check out the macaw (parrot) reservation and explore Camaronal, a national wildlife refuge. You will not run out of things to do!

About Andy and Christine Durham
The owners are a husband and wife...she an architect and he a landscape architect. We manage the house ourselves -- not through a third party -- and make frequent visits to maintain and improve it.
Andy and Christine Durham purchased this Villa in 2014
Why Andy and Christine Durham chose Puerto Carrillo
The property has been in one family since construction. The site was selected for its panoramic views of the Pacific but also the cooler air and breezes provided thanks to its elevation. It faces directly west for sunset views year round. With virtually no light pollution, the night skies can be spectacular too. You can see as many as four bays from the pool terrace but the primary view is of Playa Samara and the town of Samara -- at night Samara's lights glisten gently in the distance. Tico flavor! The house was designed by a Costa Rican architect in the Spanish hacienda style. Our staff is Tico so you'll be closer to Tico cooking and Spanish language at La Paila. The house is appointed with Tican artifacts and art: guaitil pottery, sugar-cauldrons, a Sarchi cart and ox yokes, and more. Immerse yourself a bit! Families welcome! Dogs OK.

We had truly one of the most relaxed vacations ever, the house is located in one of the most beautiful spots I have ever seen, the open living space allows for a spectacular sun set viewings with a sun downer, and bird and monkey watching. The pool is great to wake up to, and even as amazing beaches are in close proximity, we did not leave the premise on 2 days as it was just too tranquilly. Lastly, Marilu, the housekeeper is lovely and made the stay perfect with her quite attention to all our needs. All in all, wonderful, thanks Andy and Chris for opening your wonderful home to us. The perfect place to relax
We had a great holiday. Nothing can compare to those views. My whole family miss Brisa
You'll feel spoiled in this beautiful villa in a stunning, private setting with gorgeous views!
We loved La Paila!! We were a family group of 9, which included 4 couples and one toddler (12 months old). The house was perfect for a group! The communal open-air living area extended out to the beautiful pool and property, overlooking gorgeous views of the mountains and foliage and beaches, and the sights and sounds of the beautiful butterflies and birds and monkeys and frogs and other animals. It is a party house! We enjoyed a delicious breakfast and coffee prepared each morning by Marilu and her sister Estelle (not sure if I have her name correct, if not I'm sorry!), before a dip in the pool and then heading to the beach/activities/lunch/shopping/etc. Arriving home sandy and full of sun later, we'd enjoy a few hours in the late afternoon/early evening with cocktails in/by the pool and music playing before heading out to dinner. We usually also had a late evening dip after returning from dinner, and enjoyed music, drinks, games and ping pong and the deck and living area. And the hammock! :) We had Marilu and Estelle prepare one lunch and one dinner for us in addition to breakfast each morning. They are excellent cooks and the food was outstanding, and the setting is so wonderful. But we also wanted to try the wonderful restaurants in the area and just relax and not have to shop for groceries. They discussed the menus with us and made up a shopping list. Having a full kitchen, we could also have snacks and drinks on hand. Marilu and Estelle also kept the house spotless and did all of our laundry! They are very sweet and pleasant and helpful yet unobtrusive. One thing I would mention is that the road up to the house is steep and rough, and to me, a bit harrowing. I just let my husband drive lol, but you definitely need a rugged, reliable vehicle with all-wheel drive, which I think is important to know. Also, the house could use some sprucing and updating, particularly the bathrooms. The master bath was updated and very pleasant, but the other bathrooms really need updating, in particular, their showers had very poor water pressure. Also, we struggled at times with hot water for showers. The air conditioner in the master bedroom needs replacing - it does not work very well, and the ceiling fan in there was so loud and squeaky we couldn't utilize that either. But the house is gorgeous and so much fun, and the private setting and views are to die for! A few fixes would make it perfect. We would definitely stay again! And hope to. :)
We chose Andy and Christine's house because we needed a place to hold our family of 9 people who traveled to share in our wedding. What we didn't know is how much we would fall in love with this place...we had planned the wedding on the beach, but quickly realized that La Paila was the perfect place for the wedding. The view is spectacular...the house is beautiful and Marylou and her sister, Estrella are amazing! They kept the place so clean and cooked the best meals for us! We took Marylou shopping and then she cooked chicken one night. The next night, some of our party caught tuna during the day and she cooked that for us! She went out of her way to add special touches to our wedding.
There was plenty of space for everyone and we LOVED the open living area and patio.
This was a dream come true!
Breathtaking view, peaceful evenings, and delicious meals!
This was a family vacation with friends - 4 adults and 3 kids (ages ranging from 4-12). The view was so spectacular (the pictures don't do it justice) and it was such a peaceful place to be, we didn't feel the need to pack in too many activities during the day. Coming from busy work lives in busy cities, it was great to just relax and unwind. The kids loved being in the pool from morning through the evening. The nearby beaches are quiet with perfect water temperatures, horses, and lots of surfers and surfing classes. The howler monkeys were fun to watch everyday in the backyard. The birds, geckos, and toads on the property kept everyone entertained all day long. The restaurant recommendations from Christine and Andy were fantastic, but the dinners prepared by Marilu were amazing (we chose to make our own breakfasts and grab lunch while we were out and about)! The house is about 10-15 minutes from Samara and just a ride down the hill to Playa Carrillo. There are grocery stores, banks and ATMs, butchers and fishmongers, between the house and Samara. While we came during the rainy "green" season with rain in the forecast everyday, we had sunny days with occasional cloud cover - the rains would come in the evenings to cool things off. There is a wonderful macaw sanctuary nearby and we drove up to Nosara beach to check out some larger waves. We love the outdoors, so the open air style of the house was perfect. Playing some music, sitting in the hammock with a good book, playing in the pool at night, working on puzzles, playing a game of chess or ping pong while watching the sunset - we miss it and can't wait to go back again. The rooms were kept nice and cool with the air conditioners at night. We also miss Brisa, the house dog - she loves music and loves to just hang out with the family by the pool. The house had everything we needed for the beach and pool - towels, beach umbrellas, pool toys and sand toys. Christine and Andy were very responsive and provided all of the information we needed in a pre-travel package. The offered menu at the house is amazing - we need to go back for more of Marilu's pineapple crumble!
Amazing place with incredible view!!
We stayed in La Paila and could not be happier. The place was amazing! Marilu was very attentive and her food was delicious! Will definitely be returning.
