"Sailing" review

  • 4 of 5

This 2 BR house has a great location on the ocean and is centrally located in the middle of the island.

The house is showing some interior cosmetic aging (needs repainting and new bed linens). Overall, a nice place to stay, but the cleanliness was sub par (dog hairs on wood floors upstairs, bed linens had hairs on sheets). Even after calling the rental agent concerning whether the place had been vacuumed and linens washed, no effort was made on their part to remedy this. The kitchen is lacking in being fully equipped (few utensils, plates and serving pieces). The outdoor grill did not work and the front door is incredibly hard to lock and unlock.

Were it not for the price to rent this in "Fall Season rates", we would have been really disappointed in these accommodations. We have been coming to BHI for 23 summers and have stayed in numerous beach houses, so I have a good idea what to expect in renting there. This place just needs some extra sprucing up, but overall I would rate it a B--.

Excellent location, good house. Small tweaks and some upkeep will make it extraordinary!

  • 3 of 5

Sailing is a solid 3.5* house and we enjoyed our stay. The location is great with boardwalk access to a deep stretch of South Beach. The layout, with the bedrooms on the bottom and the kitchen/common area upstairs, worked well for us as it allowed everyone a chance to experience the pretty natural light on the 2nd floor while soaking in the beautiful views. Overall, the house suited our needs fine. It checked all the boxes and there was no crucial failure. However, there were many small things which detracted from the "feel" of the house.

1. The second floor balcony is run down. The balcony has been covered with perforated rubber flooring to address holes in the floor, but when it rained, water leaked onto the covered porch below.

2. Since the front of the balcony is solid, you can't see the ocean and beach while sitting in the low adirondack chairs on the balcony. There is one rocking chair with two broken slats which provides a better view. There are better rocking chairs on the front porch and moving those chairs to the balcony would be an immediate improvement.

3. The main overhead light in the upstairs room was a harsh LED or CFL. Even my 10 year made an unsolicited comment about the harsh lighting. Given the plethora of cheap, nice LED bulbs available now, this is low hanging fruit. We generally avoided the light but it was sometimes too dim without it.

4. The light fixture over the dining table constantly flickered and we couldn't use it. Though the fixture is on a dimmer and has a max wattage rating of 100W, it had a 3-way 50-200-250 bulb in it. Thinking this could be the problem, we exchanged it for one of the 60W bulbs at the house but it didn't fix the problem. We ate without a light over the dining table which was suboptimal. It only stayed on without flickering for one dinner.

5. The curtains were all too narrow to cover the windows and multiple vertical blinds were broken giving the house a run down feel.

6. The door from the left bedroom to the covered porch was stuck and we couldn't open it. We finally got it open on departure day.

7. The shower door in the right bedroom was stuck and wouldn't glide on its rails.

Extras: TVs were 2nd rate/off brand. Kitchen could be better stocked. Ants! Back porch dirty!

Overall, this was a solid house though we felt it wasn't great value at these rates. But the difference between OK and great is small and we would stay again if the owner/manager addresses these issues.

Great Location, Nice Bedrooms, Easy Access

  • 4 of 5

Overall our stay was wonderful. Great location to the beach. My only feedback is the house needs so TLC. The upstairs patio has several holes that have been covered with some rubber flooring but still feels like you could fall through.

Great location but house needs a little TLC

  • 4 of 5

My wife & I and another couple stayed at this property for Memorial Day weekend. The house is in a wonderful location. Just steps away from the beach and you can see the ocean from the first floor and the beach & ocean from the second floor. Just a few minutes to the market and marina by golf cart as well. I really can't say enough good things about the location.

The house is in need of some TLC. You can tell it being so close to the ocean is taking its toll, but for our purposes it was just fine. We weren't looking for super fancy. The location is what sold us. It had all of the amenities we needed. Only a couple of minor issues such as tv remotes not working (even after the Property Manager gave us some new batteries). The golf cart is old but it works fine. The two bicycles were in fair shape. My wife had a little bit of trouble with the women's bike but it served its purpose.

Brandy Parker (the Property Manager) was a pleasure to work with! Other than the house having a little bit of wear on it we were happy with our choice. If you're looking for a small, affordable 2 bedroom/2 bathroom ocean front property on Bald Head Island this is a good choice.

One thing I would recommend to the homeowner...the upstairs deck needs some outdoor furniture. There was only one rocking chair and a tiny table outside and the view is AWESOME so guests will definitely want to sit out there and enjoy it!

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as described. The view was amazing and the house was perfect size for our group of 4 + dog. Can't wait to go back and stay at this same house.

Off Season BHI

  • 2 of 5

Off season Bald Head Island is not for everyone. NOTHING open except the Market. My mistake but not communicated by the agent nor the owner.

House needs some attention. Master bath shower door is problematic and upper deck need major repair.

I live in NC and understand spring time pollen but there is no excuse for not at least rinsing off the outer areas before guest arrive.
