About the host
Hosted by Heather Duncan
I am a Knoxville native with deep ties to the Smoky Mountains. Some of my best memories growing up were of my grandparents taking me on the various hikes within the Smoky Mountain National Park or to visit the old homesteads or churches, still scattered throughout its boarders. I love the flora and fauna of the area, and the scenery never grows old. I love sharing my knowledge and experience of the area with newcomers or returning guests.
Why they chose this property
The neighborhood surrounding By the Docks offers a rare combination of natural beauty and convenience. Tucked among unspoiled woodlands, wetlands, and scenic shoreline, the area is characterized by mature trees, abundant wildlife, and a mix of large private estates and lakeside communities. Despite its peaceful, secluded feel, you're never far from the essentials. Grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and everyday conveniences are just 7–10 minutes away, while downtown Knoxville, the University of Tennessee, and many of the area's top attractions are only a short drive from the property. It's the perfect setting for guests who want to enjoy nature without sacrificing easy access to the city.
What makes this property unique
From the nearby boat dock—visible from the property—you can watch a steady parade of boats cruising toward Neyland Stadium, creating a uniquely Knoxville experience, especially on game days.
From late spring through early fall, a finger of Fort Loudon Lake extends into the wetlands bordering our property, attracting an abundance of wildlife. Guests often spot wood ducks, great blue herons, geese, and other waterfowl along the shoreline. The surrounding meadow is frequented by deer, and it's not uncommon to see wild turkeys wandering the grounds. We intentionally positioned the home to take full advantage of these beautiful views and wildlife encounters.
For us, this location offers the best of both worlds: easy access to Knoxville's restaurants, attractions, and university events, combined with the serenity of a private nature retreat. It's a place where you can sip your morning coffee while watching wildlife, spend the day exploring the city or the lake, and end the evening surrounded by peaceful Tennessee scenery.
