About this property

Purple Haze 3BR Boone Log Cabin · Hot Tub · Long-Range Views · Sleeps 10

THE VIEW THAT NAMED THE HOUSE

As soon as you walk through the front door, you will understand the name. The great room opens into a cathedral wall of glass, floor to ceiling, and behind it the Appalachians stack up ridge after ridge, going blue and then purple as they roll north into Virginia. Purple mountains majesty, right there in the window. We do love Jimi. That is not where the name came from.

Purple Haze is a spacious luxury log cabin in the hills between Boone and Blowing Rock, about 15 minutes from each and 1.7 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Exposed beams, hardwood floors, a corner stone fireplace with gas logs, and enough comfortable seating that nobody has to claim a chair early.

THE MAIN LEVEL

The great room, kitchen and dining area all share the view. The galley kitchen is genuinely set up for cooking rather than reheating: a drip coffee maker and a Keurig, electric kettle, water filter, blender, mixer, baking pans and muffin tins, spices, and the dining table seats eight. Sliding doors open onto the large deck, where you will find the hot tub, the gas grill, and outdoor dining under an umbrella.

The primary suite is on this level too, with a private bath and its own deck access. No stairs to reach a bedroom, which guests traveling with parents or grandparents tell us over and over is the reason they booked.

UPSTAIRS AND DOWN

The loft looks out over the great room and into that same view: two twin beds, a leather sofa, and a reading nook that is hard to leave. Downstairs are two more bedrooms, each with a queen, sharing a full bath with a tub-shower. The den on that level has a queen sleeper sofa and a second TV with a DVD and video library, which is where the kids tend to end up, or where somebody watches the game without taking over the house. The lower deck is covered, so the view holds even when the weather does not. Downstairs, guests can also enjoy the covered deck’s fire pit, a cozy spot to gather, relax, and take in the mountain surroundings. Laundry is on this level.

SLEEPING FOR TEN

Primary suite: king. Bedroom two: queen. Bedroom three: queen. Loft: two twins. Den: queen sleeper sofa.

THE SETTING

The cabin sits on a rural, dead-end paved street with almost no traffic. It is quiet, private even with neighbors nearby, and an easy place to let kids and dogs be outside. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail passes within half a mile. Some of the best day hiking in the Blue Ridge is inside 15 minutes, with waterfalls and swimming holes if you know where to look. Blowing Rock is a pretty 15-minute drive for fine dining and shopping; Boone is 15 minutes the other way for a college town's worth of restaurants, live music and shops. Tweetsie Railroad is 10 minutes, Moses Cone Park and Mystery Hill are 8, and Appalachian Ski Mountain is 11.

GOOD TO KNOW

Central air conditioning and heat. WiFi throughout. Smart TV in the great room and a second TV downstairs. Washer and dryer. Dogs are welcome for a fee. Self check-in with a smart lock. Winter visitors: four-wheel drive or chains are strongly recommended.

Take care of trash: Bag all trash and secure it in the outdoor bins, closed and latched — bears are active here. Start the dishwasher if you've used dishes.

Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.

I sought out a place that had a bedroom on the main floor as I was traveling with senior family members, which can be hard to find in mountain properties. The mountain view did not disappoint and even though there were houses around us, it was very quiet and felt private. Bedrooms were cozy and clean. It was also nice to have a second TV area downstairs, away from the main room. Taking the dog on long walks was a challenge as there is no flat ground around, so we found the greenway in Boone and other parks. Owner was responsive and helpful when my booking dates changed. I'd come back.

We had a wonderful stay in this home. We comfortably slept 8 people here and felt right at home. We had to tweak our dates and the owner responded right away to our request. About the host

Hosted by Nick Reuter

Host profile image

Hi! I'm Nick, and along with my wife Kathi and our three amazing kids, we split time between sunny gulf-coast Florida and the beautiful North Carolina mountains. We moved south from Massachusetts back in 2017, but the Blue Ridge Mountains quickly captured our hearts! There's nothing better than knowing our guests are making memories in a place that means so much to our family. We're hands-on, responsive, and always just a message away to make sure your stay is perfect!

Why they chose this property

Purple Haze won out for its balance of privacy and access. The home sits on a rural dead-end paved street in the hills between Boone and Blowing Rock, quiet enough that wind in the trees outweighs traffic, and private enough for kids and dogs to roam freely even with neighbors nearby. With the Blue Ridge Parkway just 1.7 miles from the driveway and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail passing within half a mile of the door, outdoor access doesn't get much more direct than this.

The location sealed it: Blowing Rock's charming village of fine dining, galleries, and shopping sits about 15 minutes away, while Boone's lively college-town energy, restaurants, and live music are 15 minutes in the other direction. In between lies some of the best day hiking in the Blue Ridge, along with Moses Cone Memorial Park and Mystery Hill just 8 minutes out, Tweetsie Railroad at 10, and Appalachian Ski Mountain at 11. Fall makes the case on its own — the long-range views from the decks turn into a weeks-long color show — while winter brings skiing within easy reach, and regular visits from deer (and the occasional bear) keep the mountain feel front and center.

What makes this property unique

What makes Purple Haze unique is its rare balance of seclusion and access — a rural dead-end paved street quiet enough to hear wind in the trees rather than traffic, yet just 1.7 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and half a mile from the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The setting gives kids and dogs room to roam freely while keeping some of the best day hiking in the Blue Ridge, including waterfalls and swimming holes, essentially at the doorstep. Its position between Boone and Blowing Rock, each about 15 minutes away, means guests get charming village shopping and dining on one side and lively college-town energy on the other, plus quick access to Moses Cone Memorial Park, Mystery Hill, Tweetsie Railroad, and Appalachian Ski Mountain, all within an 11-minute drive. Long-range deck views turn fall into a weeks-long color show, winter brings skiing nearby, and regular sightings of deer and the occasional bear round out a setting that feels genuinely wild despite being minutes from everything.
