About Gary Gutowsky

I grew up in the Bay Area and my parents, my brother, and I have enjoyed vacationing in Lake Tahoe since the mid-60s. We bought the lot in 1972 and built the cabin ourselves in 1976. After retiring from the Air Force in 2011, my wife and I settled in the Sacramento area to be close to our kids and so we could spend more time at the Lake. Since then we have spent a considerable about of time at the cabin and love being there. When we're not there, I spend my free time volunteering with the American Cancer Society and Junior Achievement.

Gary Gutowsky purchased this chalet in 1976

Why Gary Gutowsky chose Lake Tahoe West Shore CA

We love the West Shore of Lake Tahoe! That's why we've been coming up here as long as I can remember. There is so much to do here, or not...it's up to you. One of my favorite activities is to walk down to the pier at Water's Edge in the evening and check out all the stars. It's amazing and so relaxing. Another fun activity is a bike ride around the neighborhood or through Sugar Pine Point State Park. As a very recreational skier, I love skiing at Homewood. It's only a few minutes away and it's a great family ski area with some of the best views of the lake. I think my favorite time of year there is the Fall. The days are still warm but the nights cool down so it's a perfect time to sit outside during the day and cozy up to the fire at night. And since the kids are back in school, it not crowded there at all. Lake Tahoe is my favorite place in the world...any time of year!

What makes this chalet unique

Our cabin is a labor of love. We built it in 1976 as a family project with the help of a few friends. Although it was built with many hand-me-downs is has always been cozy and comfortable. We updated the kitchen in 2006 and the bathrooms in 2013. Also in 2013 we replaced most of the furnishings and all the linens. We're very happy with the way it turned out--maintaining that rustic charm while providing all the modern conveniences. Come check it out!

Great cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cabin from April 9-11, 2017 during the spring break. The cabin was wonderful, clean, fully stocked and best of all, it had a heated bathroom floor! The area was near supermarkets, shops, and ski resorts. The staff was friendly and even gave us weather conditions on the day of our travel. We had a great time!

Warm, quaint abode that provided us with everything we expected!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed over at Gary's for the weekend of January 27-29th and it was absolutely wonderful. The house was a breeze to get to once we got to Tahoe. It's only about 2.5 miles from Homewood so it was very ideal. Our directions on how to enter the house on the first night was very clear and Gary did a wonderful job responding in a very timely manner for any questions that we had. He was very accommodating providing us with a bottle of lake Tahoe wine as well as allowing us to come back to the cabin to freshen up before leaving as there were no guests after our check out on Sunday.

Overall there were plenty of towels and blankets as well as ample beds for all our members. Additionally the kitchen had all the utensils we needed as well as cookware. In fact many of the items we brought as well as condiments werent even needed since the kitchen was essentially fully stocked. Gary was even nice enough to bring in a cast iron because on one of my emails I asked if there was one available.

Upon our arrival Friday night the water was still warm and the house was prewarmed for us. One of our favorite parts was that the restroom on the first floor even had heated tiles so our feet weren't freezing in the morning. (super awesome!).

To summarize:

Kitchen: A+ as it had more than what we needed and expected

Heat (air and water temperature): A+ as we were never cold

Space: A+ we had plenty of space!

Driveway: A+ nicely plowed, though maybe somewhat difficult to locate (not due to Gary's fault as there are 8ft snow walls along all the routes in tahoe)

We would definitely return here if we were to ski Homewood in the future!

Beautiful cabin! Awesome owner!

  • 5 of 5

FANTASTIC! The cabin was in phenomenal shape. It was one of our best experiences ever visiting Lake Tahoe. The cabin is so cozy and the living area was perfect for the entire cabin to just hang out. There's a super stocked kitchen with everything we needed to cook. The beds were very comfortable and the linens were awesome. There was a very handy guide full of tips for us to enjoy our stay. The fireplace was stocked with plenty of wood. The TV was full of HD channels with Netflix installed. The Wi-Fi internet was fast. Homewood, probably the most picturesque resort in the USA, is only 5 minutes away. You're also a minute walk away from the lake. There was even a baby playard, a folding bed, and so many other essentials for any group staying at the cabin. You can tell Gary, the unbelievably kind and resourceful owner, really thought the customer experience through.

Gary cemented the fantastic Lake Tahoe experience for us because he made it so easy to reserve and stay at his beautiful cabin. He was responsive with every email and was on top of everything we needed for our stay. He's such a kind and amazing person. Gary is, without the doubt, the best cabin owner in Lake Tahoe!

Great place to stay

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is beautiful and in a great location. We stayed here for almost a full week, only problem that we had during the stay was that almost two full days we were without power. On our last full day at the cabin the power shut off from 8am all the way until 3am the following morning. No backup generator or enough candles to light the house. One candle and one flashlight.

Other than not being able to really snowboard because of the storm, we couldn't enjoy two days of the cabin due to power outages.

It's a great place to stay, just don't during any storms haha.

The cabin was fully stocked, easy to find and completely clean when we arrived. They called to check up on us a few times which I thought was very considerate.

I'd give the full 5 stars but losing power a whole day and a half or so kind of wasted a good chunk of money.

Owner's Response: Hi Tyler, Sorry that the power outage happened during your stay. Sounds like otherwise, you had a great time. The power was out on the entire West Shore of Lake Tahoe for about a week and the power company had trouble getting to the downed lines due to its remote location and the incredible amount of snow. That being said, I take the safety and comfort of my renters very seriously and will be putting additional flashlights and even a couple hurricane lamps at the cabin this weekend. It's been years (even decades) since we've had a snow event of this magnitude so I've not considered the need for a generator. I plan to look into this. Thanks for your honest feedback. We're always looking for ways to improve our renters' Tahoe experience. Gary

Wonderful property, fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at this great home for a quick ski vacation. The location is perfect for skiing Homewood, a smaller yet first class ski area. The home is very close to the lake, and some great restaurants. During our short visit, we were caught in a snow storm, both the property manager, and the owners called us and ensured we were safe, and directed us where to get chains. The fireplace kept us plenty warm and there was plenty of space for us. Beds are comfy, and the kitchen is very well equipped. Would recommend this cabin to all groups. Ps there is a bed and bath with heated floor on the first floor. Would stay here again!
