Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, Living Room With Kitchen, 1 Bathroom With Shower, Terraces With View

This new, modern, 55 square meter (550 square ft.) penthouse loft with 2 outdoor terraces, built on top of a late 19th century apartment building in Vienna’s 15th, or “Fünfhaus” District, is owned and designed by an American, Harvard-educated architect.

Located on a quiet street in Vienna’s most multicultural district, the apartment is perfect for those looking for a unique place to stay in an interesting, diverse, up-and-coming neighborhood, removed from the typical downtown tourist areas.

Not to suggest that the apartment is in the middle of nowhere: it is only a 20-minute walk to the Schönbrunn Palace; a 3-Minute walk to the underground U3 subway station, bus, tram & taxi stand; a 10-15-Minute Subway ride to all major attractions and historical sites in the heart of the city, as well as in the thriving, fashionable 7th district (St. Stephan’s Cathedral, Vienna State Opera House, Ringstrasse, Mariahilferstrasse, Spittelberg, Museumsquartier); and a 5-Minute subway ride to the Westbahnof train station with regional / international train and airport bus connections.

This sleek, state-of-the-art loft faces a quiet courtyard and includes a large, beautifully designed bathroom with a toilet and shower, spacious living room with a fully-equipped kitchen and HDTV, and a cozy bedroom separated from the living room with sliding doors.

And to “top” it off: both living room and bedroom have direct access through large glass doors to a secluded apartment-level terrace, which is connected to another upper roof terrace with lounge chairs for relaxing in the sun and enjoying the beautiful view of Vienna!

The apartment is ideal for romantic getaways for couples, vacations for small families, as well as business trips for executives.

About Monika Makowicka

I (the owner) am an American-born, Harvard-educated architect. I grew up in New York City, and have been living and working in Vienna for over 20 years. My firm, which I founded with 2 Austrian partners, specializes in building luxury penthouse apartments in Vienna.

Monika Makowicka purchased this apartment in 2014

Why Monika Makowicka chose Vienna

As an architect and part-time developer, I fell in love with Vienna because of its fantastic architecture, culture, and urban amenities. I personally and specifically hand-picked this property (at that time, an empty attic space) in Vienna’s 15th district, which is Vienna's most multicultural neighborhood, and reminds me of the diverse ethnic areas of New York City where I grew up during my youth. The area is quickly being developed, but at the same time maintains an authentic feel not found in other touristic parts of the city. The street is very safe, and the neighbors are friendly. Also, the excellent public transportation connections (subway, tram), which are just a 2-minute walk away, make it an ideal place to reside.

What makes this apartment unique

My tenant, the beautiful and friendly Monika, rents, manages and administrates the apartment and lives next door on the same level with her young son, Adrian, in the adjacent penthouse loft. She is a native of Vienna, and will take great care of you. And I'm quite sure you'll enjoy relaxing on the spacious outdoor terrace spaces after a long day exploring this beautiful city!

great stay

Had a great stay. The Apartment was clean, located near a subway station and only a few stops from the center of town. Monika was easy to communicate and greeted us on our arrival. She was a perfect host and we would greatly recommend the place.

Excellent neighborhood apartment

  • 5 of 5

Our seven day stay was fantastic in every way. The rooftop apartment was exactly as described, and was better eqipped than most we've stayed in. We like to cook and there was no problem putting together meals, especially since the neighborhood grocery options are great. A few blocks away, the Meiselmarkt is a wonderful indoor food bazaar (the Turkish bread was to die for) and above it is a well-stocked supermarket. Plenty of other prepared food options nearby, including a nice family bakery steps away.

The neighborhood is loaded with interesting restaurants and bistros. Within a short walking distance, the very authentic Heidinger's Gasthaus was perhaps the best meal we had in Vienna. Also nearby, amidst a fascinating community of garden homes, there's a classic Austrian beer garden that also seves food. (Look for the Auf der Schmelz sign.) No tourists at either of these spots, but they were totally welcoming.

Both of these were recommended by our host Monika, who was friendly, helpful, and totally into making our stay a pleasure. She said she tries to keep in mind what she wants in a rental when she travels, and it shows. I haven't come across a more accomodating host.

Some travellers might be reluctant to stay in a real Vienna neighborhood rather than in the Inner Ring. Again, I can only say that discovering Rudolfsheim/Fūnfhaus, "the Fifteenth," made our experience of Vienna incredibly richer than if we'd only marched around the marquee sites with the thousands of other tourists. Vienna has an amazing transportation system, and there's a subway stop five minutes away. Leaving the hordes and getting back to our quiet neighborhood each evening after a 15 minute subway or tram ride was a relief. Streetcars, subway and walking get you anywhre fast. The area is perfectly safe and no problem getting around if your German is shaky.

If you're looking to sample a bit of real life in your travels in addition to the well-trodden tourist spots- and why bother visiting great cities if you're not?- the ViennaApartment is a lovely, modern, extremely quiet, perfectly situated accomodation, and well-worth the reasonable rate. Would stay again in a heartbeat.

Very nice apartment on top floor with roof terrace.

  • 3 of 5

We really liked the apartment and it's close proximity to the subway. Area around apartment is a little run down without nice cafes and resturants you would expect in Vienna.

Owner's Response: Dear Dave, I am happy you enjoyed our apartment. However, I feel compelled to respond to your 3-star rating and critique of the neighborhood. Yes, the block where the apartment is located is primarily residential, as most blocks just outside of the touristy city center are. But if you had spent a few more days here (as you had originally planned), you would have been able to enjoy many of the great, interesting, ethnic restaurants and cafes in the area – including a beautiful “Biergarten” and wonderful farmer’s market – all within a five-minute walking distance (all of which are described in the binder we keep for guests in the apartment). As we mentioned in the property description, the apartment is “located on a quiet street in Vienna’s most multicultural district, the apartment is perfect for those looking for a unique place to stay in an interesting, diverse, up-and-coming neighborhood, removed from the typical downtown tourist areas.” I believe this is a very honest description. Of course, if you wanted to stay in a penthouse apartment next to the St. Stephans Cathedral in the tourist center of the city, you probably would have had to pay at least double the price. thanks a lot for your stay again Very kind regards from Vienna Monika

You won't be disappointed.

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful owner, an outstanding flat, in a great location. You can't beat the location of this flat. It is located less than 2 blocks from the U-3 U-Bahn, which will get you to anywhere you need to go. The neighborhood is quiet and anything you could need from food to shopping is just a few minutes walk. The apartment is well equipped and the pictures accurately depict the apartment. We received prompt responses to messages before and during our visit. Our security deposit was quickly refunded after the visit.

All of the comments dated before ours regarding the owner, the apartment and the location, are accurate. You won't be disappointed if you rent this flat from Monika.
