About Louise Baranowski
I was born and raised in London and now reside in San Francisco. When we were looking to buy a place we decided to get a place with land and peace and quiet for our weekend getaways. I love being near water and riding by bike on quiet roads.
Louise Baranowski purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2002
Why Louise Baranowski chose Sutter Creek
We have had many fun parties at the house and camping on the land. There is a great sense of release as you lay in the hammock as the sun sets or sitting in the hot tub underneath the stars. We never feel the need to leave the house as it is relaxing and you can explore up and down the creek. We also have fuze ball and horseshoes and an outdoor shower at the end of the deck
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
It has a great indoor/outdoor living space with dinners on the deck and lots of lounge area's. It has been used as a yoga retreat as well. The best part about the Red house is it is very private
Please consider the following guidelines when booking this property:
100% refund if canceled at least 14 days before arrival date. 50% refund if canceled at least 7 days before arrival date.
Nice out of the way retreat to unplug and unwind from the real world.
We had a total of 6 people (2 kids, 4 adults) at the house, and it accommodated all of us nicely. Wi-Fi is excellent, but there is no cell phone service, so it makes it a little difficult to plan get-togethers without going into town. We did see deer and the fish in the creek were great fun for the kids. I liked the country feel.
The whole house and grounds need a good cleaning. We had ants in the bathroom and on the kitchen counters and found a wasp in the bathroom. There was nothing in the way of a cleaning cloth to wipe down counters and tables. We bought some ourselves instead of using paper towels. Some one should go through the pantry and refrigerator to clean up the expired condiments and spices left by to other guests. We arrived on a day that was 105 degrees. It took a while for the house to cool down. Especially the upstairs. A couple of window AC units would probably be beneficial to guests and to the life of the house.
All in all we had a wonderful stay at Red House and would recommend it to those who like country living.
Thank you to our host for allowing us to take part in your quiet little oasis.
Comfortable but dirty..reason I loved it was because the family was together
When we got there the coffee pot had coffee in it and the grounds were full of mold... we had to put boiling water in it to clean.... refrig was dirty..... someone had made what looked like pancakes and the dried batter was flung all over which we had to scrap off and clean... the dish drainer had dirty forks in it and was dirty itself... the place needs a thorough cleaning... big dust balls under the beds and behind the couches (I dropped an earring and had to go looking for it)...
My son (who's house is high tech so understands these things) could not get the TV to work so we missed the Warrior championship final game as well as the Preakness where a triple crown winner was declared... so disappointing.
No one could use their cell phones... we connected with the wi-fi so if you have something important going on you need to have the landline number which wasn't given to us.
The tables are dirty so take tablecloths.
Overall we had a good weekend just being together and it's fun to "play" in the creek... there are no horseshoes and the pit needs work. We had wanted to play.
The house is old and a eclectic mix of decor and furniture. The only wash cloths we found were badly stained. If the owner is going to try to make money off this place they need to spend some. And our paying a cleaning fee is a joke as we spent a lot of time cleaning before we settled in. It is well supplied with linens and kitchenware but everything is very old and obviously has seen better days.... think that they probably bought a lot of it used. The beds were comfortable but they have a strange bed set up in the master... headboard doesn't match the mattress. Very little lighting so if you want to read at night you're kinda out of luck.
Like the location and the weather was fantastic. The Gold Dust pizza downtown Sutter Creek has some of the best pizza I've ever had and we had a wonderful dinner at the Ledger Hotel in Mokelumne City ... also the coffee shop in Volcano was great for breakfast.
The day before we left a pig came wandering onto the property. I was really frightened because she went running toward our dog and I was afraid she was wild... turns out she is very friendly and is a pet... the person who owns her has a business card in the kitchen but we didn't read it before as I thought it was a realtor's card and ignored it..anyone going be aware... she loves to be petted but when you first see her she is startling
So sorry you had a bad experience at my house. My cleaning lady of many years moved out of state and I was dealing with a new cleaner she had trained but there were a few hiccups in the beginning. The house was purchased in 2003 and remodeling began after that and everything was brought new over the years as we got it set up. I charge $250 per night and it sleeps 8 which works out at $33 per person with a hot tub on the hillside and 5 acres to wander around on. The hot tub, laundry and cleaner are all are all costs I incur and maintenance as things break and constantly need to be fixed.
The master bedrooms is a platform bed and doesn't have a headboard just a bolster behind the pillows so you can sit up, so not sure what you meant. Texts come through but phone coverage is spotty in the valley and the house number is in the manual.
sad you didn't enjoy it as much as other guests have
Wonderful hideaway, quiet, yet not far from things to do
We just spent four nights over the Fourth of July, wanting peace and quiet for our dog, who hates fireworks, as well as some time away with friends, and some friends who came up for a day. And this rental fits the bill perfectly.
The view off the full back deck is beautiful; you look at trees and nature; we ate breakfast almost every day on it. Neighboring houses are hardly noticeable. Wildlife abounds; I saw deer twice on the property, and several times on the drive into or out of Sutter Creek.
Facilities are very good; the kitchen is above average for a cabin-type rental, and two grills are provided, one charcoal, one propane. The house sits above Sutter Creek, which this year is flowing nicely, and our Golden Retriever enjoyed very much. (Note that the hillside is a bit steep). We also drove to the nearby North Fork of the Mokelumne River and spent some time on a beach. (The water was higher and faster than normal, so no chance for our dog to get out there.)
Inside there is a large sectional, and one of the largest ottoman/pouf/lounging thing-a-mabobs I've ever seen. You can even fall asleep on it! The TV is upstairs, part of a little entertainment area/sleeping area (with foosball table). The downstairs bedroom was very nice, opening on to the deck, with a great mattress. Our friend reports her bed was comfortable as well.
The cabin's location is about 10 minutes from the city of Sutter Creek, 15 minutes from Jackson, 20 from Plymouth and the Shenandoah Valley AVA. From Sacramento, it's a little over an hour away, and is well worth the drive.
One caveat this time of year: there were quite a few wasps flying around. I suspect a lot of this is due to the good rains we've had the past couple of years.
We will definitely be back.
Bad Experience and costly lesson.
First the communication was poor with owner. Never received directions and access info to place or checkin times from owner - had to call VRBO who gave me her number and texted her to get info. Once we got there, unpacked the car, dogs and family. When we walked upstairs, noticed an infestation of wasps, located around every window and in an unfinished bathroom. Killed about 20 of them then texted owner (since VRBO gave me her text number from above). She called the phone at the property and advised she just got back from vacation and could not make it out that day as she was too busy and had a hair appointment. She didn't know if she could get a service to come out and thought we could get some bug spray to resolve. She acknowledged that they have issues with ants but not with wasps. There were many wasps around the outside of the place so just killing more of the ones inside was not going to stop the access given to them by the unfinished bathroom (exposed studs).
Advised her the place wasn't habitable with this situation and that we couldn't stay here. She advised to call VRBO for a refund. After I hung up with owner, went back upstairs to take one more look to see if we could make it work, but in the time of a phone call downstairs, there were already another round of wasps in the windows. Since I didn't want my family exposed to either potential stings or inhalation of bug spray fumes, we packed up and left. Since we planned to travel with our pets, we were left to cancel the rest of our planned vacation as staying in a hotel was not a viable alternative. Very disappointed.
After the fact, the owner decided not to refund some of our rental after all, as she thought we didn't give her ample time to fix the issue, which was not disclosed during our earlier discussion.
All the details of check in and check out are on the websiteand I give out address the week of renters coming in As soon as I got a message I called and I was working and doing clients so I told the renter I could get someone out but would have to call inbetween clients. It is a country house and sometimes things out of our control happen. There had been rain for months and the sudden change in temperature brought out bugs. They had been caught in that room and when the guy came in he explained there was no nest. He said there was no need to spray. The room upstairs is covered and there is no way for them to get in and just the regular small amount you see outside. The renters really didn't give me a chance to fix it and someone was out and it was sorted by 3pm.
I kept a $240 deposit for calling out the guy as it wasn't necessary and feel that was small compared to money lost from a last minute cancellation
Lovely spot for a get-away!
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay there in early March of this year - even with the storm that passed through, we had a great time. We loved the large deck, and the layout of the house was very nice. The owner was easy and pleasant to work with for our reservation and appreciated her quick responses. We would highly recommend this property to get away for a break.
Great Weekend in Gold Country
We had a great stay with our 2.5 year old triplets. So good that we had a hard time getting them to leave. The house is tucked away in the trees and feels wonderfully secluded, while being just a few minutes down the road from the town of Sutter Creek. We loved sitting in the hot tub under the stars, and relaxing on the big hammock on the porch. The house has everything you'll need for a comfortable stay. We look forward to coming back (we promised the kids!)
The Gold country has great wineries, Black Chasm and panning for gold, Indian grinding rock and museums. 8 miles from the house is a great Restaurant in the town of Volcano. The surrounding towns are quaint and worth a visit. An amazing Bakery in Amador city. There is a casino in Jackson and for those that ski it's an hour to Kirkwood ski area. There are some great bike trips from the house following the road along the creek
