About Susan Chaney

The home you see here was once a simple sketch on a piece of paper! As so many dreams come and go they often start just like this. 'The Mountains are Calling' is a home built with Love, a home for gathering and a home meant to enjoy and to make memories. The house was built in 2011 and is complete with the things that make coming up to visit simple and carefree. Heated floors make up the entire 1st level living area, zoned for comfort, later, a water filtration system was added, and finaly to top off the perfect vacation home a Hot tub was added 2014.

Why Susan Chaney chose Blue Ridge Mountains

For many years working in the Raliegh area coming to this peice of Heaven was a simple weekend trip! Shortly after construction was complete the family moved further east making the commute less and less until it was time to offer it to others to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

The zoned HVAC system was added in 2013, but the Heat for the house is actually zoned radiant heat floors. There is also a fireplace with a gas lighter that is wood burning. With the house being so new we also have wonderful stainless steel appliances and have tried to add some comforts to the home for additional enjoyment like spices for cooking, extra pots and pans, plenty of cooking utensils... little things that we hope everyone can enjoy! On the back porch there is a fire pit along with some Restoration Hardware Wicker furniture... if you were looking for a place to read a book in the summer... you found it.... Upstairs we have a piano and some other instruments for guest to use... we hope it makes your stay just perfect!

Derek N from Raleigh, NC recommends this vacation rental

We initially booked this property for 4 days and ended up staying a month because we loved it so much. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing time in the mountains.

Reviewer Comments:

This wasn't exactly a planned vacation. My daughter, son-in-law, 5 grandchildren, and our dogs got chased out of Florida by Hurricane Irma. This property provided us with all the amenities of home. We were amazed at how comfortable the beds were. Susan Chaney was an absolute saint. She also gave us a discount because of our plight. We all loved this place and the kids had a ball. We would most certainly rent the property again.

Reviewer Comments:

Loved the space! Easily slept our two families (4 adults, 2 teens, 3 kids) and could have slept a handful more with no need for added air mattresses or couches. Loved the open living spaces and clean interior design and furnishings. Had all the kitchen stuff we needed as well as a ton of extra comfy pillows and blankets for snuggling. Great outdoor spaces and lovely community to explore. Yes, the drive to stores is not short, and the climb to the cabin is not easy, but both are absolutely worth it for this space. Host was lovely and totally accessible. We had a dog and the space is great for pets and kids.

Reviewer Comments:

We spent three nights in the cabin with a total of 9 people (5 young children and 4 adults). It is a very nice cabin overall, with a few tweaks that need to be made. On the positive side, it was spacious, had nice linens, mostly clean, nice accessories in kitchen (had what we need for cooking) and some pantry supplies provided, and nice furniture. We loved reading about the owners' building experience in the provided book. Downsides: back porch was dirty/messy upon arrival, some towels smelled like cigarette smoke, cigarette butts on back porch, several bulbs were out so it was dark inside, and guest room mattress was terrible. Powderhorn mountain is beautiful, but remote. Buy LOTS of groceries before you arrive because closest grocery store is about 20 min. up and down a very windy road. Very nice pool and gorgeous hiking trails/swimming spots at campground that we loved. With a longer stay, visitors can venture out around the surrounding areas, but it is not an easy location to get to. Wouldn't want to go up and down Elk Creek Rd. in the snow or ice personally. Overall, a satisfactory experience in a nice cabin, but there are definitely a few kinks to work out.

Poor choice on my part

Reviewer Comments:

The cabin has potential but the owners have not done one thing to update this cabin since they started renting it out. It was advertised as a smoke free rental. When we arrived and went into the master bedroom the smell of smoke was so bad we had to open the windows to be able to sleep the first night. All of the bedding smelled of smoke. The oven does not work, we had purchased food to cook in the oven and had to throw it out because there was no way to cook it. The outdoor area was so dirty we could not even sit there. There is a fenced in area for the dogs but it has large rocks for them to walk on rather than grass or even mulch. There was no way they could go there to go to the bathroom. Mileage wise it is close to Boone. But with the back roads it took us over 40 minutes each time we went out. So you definitely have to plan your trips out. I own a beach rental at North Myrtle Beach and I know that you have to replace items every year. Spend money to make money !! Unless they clean this cabin up I would definitely not stay here again nor recommend to anyone.

Reviewer Comments:

Beautifully built cabin but so many small flaws added up to disappointment. There were at least 4-5 light bulbs burnt out in the kitchen/main living area so it was very dark in the house. When we showed up I smelled cigarette smoke and saw ashes in the kitchen trash can left by the cleaning crew. The tub in the downstairs bathroom was very very slow to drain. The four bar stools looked to be on their last leg so I wouldn't even let my children sit on them for fear they would break. The outdoor furniture/cushions were very moldy and dirty that relaxing outside was not an option. There was only one hammock, not two as pictured, and was also on its last leg with tears in the rope. The community pool was under construction and therefore closed. If we had known this we would not have chosen any cabin in the Powder Horn Community. And finally I was very upset when someone showed up our final day at 9:30am and sat in their car waiting for us to leave at 10. I felt completely rushed and it ruined my whole trip.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback! We take our reviews VERY seriously. Since we received your feedback we have made several improvements and hope you can come back to enjoy them! The tub is now draining properly! The outdoor cushions have all been replaced. I added 6 new adirondack chairs to the front porch and I am removing the second hammock swing(They are just worn out too easily) As for the pool it should be open by the end of the month of July 2017. The good news is we also have plenty of local swimming holes and sit on a state stocked trout stream so if it is water that you want I am always happy to recommend other options! Our cleaning crew is one of the best and we love and adore them. Every once in a while we have back to back bookings and just want to make sure the cabin is ready for the next vacationer. It was my fault they showed up early... we have been trying to change the check out time to 10 am instead of 11 and for some reason I can not get the booking coorespondence to cooperate! Needless to say we will always keep trying to improve our service to each of our guests and appreciate any and all feedback to make us better at what we do!
