About John Perry

My name is John Perry and, in addition to owning the Clark Fork River Lodge, I also operate John Perry's Montana Fly Fishing. This business is an outfitting company specializing in fly fishing some of Montana's finest waters such as Clark Fork River, Rock Creek, Bitterroot River, Blackfoot River, and the Missouri River, as well as many of their tributaries.

John Perry purchased this lodge in 2002

Why John Perry chose Paradise

I chose this location because of the solitude, beauty, serenity, fly fishing opportunites, wildlife viewing, and proximity to a wide variety of outdoor and recreational activities, such as hiking, skiing, bicycling, etc. The Clark Fork River is one of Montana's best kept secrets for fly fishing.

What makes this lodge unique

This timber frame lodge was built with the guest in mind.

The Clark Fork River Lodge is located on the National Wild and Scenic River section of the Clark Fork River. We have a state of the art generator and solar panel system which allows the guests to enjoy their stay in this pristine environment. This area has cell phone service.

This is a beautiful lodge as well as the location. Our time there was amazing. The views of the river and mountains are spectacular!!! Great area for walks, hikes and fishing and a special place for avid hunters.

A little slice of paradise--great fishing, great food and great people.

  • 5 of 5

I'd been out in the area for business functions a couple of times in recent years, and had used John Perry's fishing guide services and stayed once at the Clark Fork River Lodge. When a couple of friends and family members started talking about putting a fishing trip together, the Lodge was at the top of my list of recommendations. A quick email to John Perry had our arrangements confirmed in a few days. As I expected, all involved came back from our early September excursion in total awe of the area, the fishing, the accommodations and the people--great guides and cooks! When the members of our travel group talk about it today, all agree it was a trip of a lifetime. If you're looking for the Montana mountain wilderness experience, yet you don't want to sacrifice 21st century amenities, the Clark Fork River Lodge offers just the right combination.

Be Prepared

  • 3 of 5

I have to begin by saying this was a really fun place for our large family reunion. We rafted and kayaked, watched wildlife from the deck, enjoyed nightly campfires and hiked local trails. We make the most of our reunion location, wherever we go! But, before staying at this house you should know: 1)trains run so close that no one can sleep through their passing (3 times a night or more while construction happens summer 2016) 2) The outdated solar power system means you can't use any heat producing electric items (blow dryers, curling irons, toasters, etc.) It also means that lights in the basement won't stay on at night and people using a CPAP machine were unable to run it through the night. The refrigerators are very small, propane refrigerators. 3) Grills outside did not have enough propane to even be used once without going to town to refill tank. 4) There are NOT 8 bedrooms. There are 5 bedrooms with 3 sleeping areas that people have to walk through. One of the beds was broken which made for a rough night until we rearranged beds. 5)Many windows don't open making it very hot and difficult to cool at night. Some of the windows that did open had ripped out screens. 6) A pile of larvae of some kind was on the floor in the downstairs refrigerator room (after the cleaning person had just left.)

Owner's Response: We learned long ago that one cannot please everyone, and we appreciate feed back, earned or unearned. We have had hundreds of very satisfied guests through many years and have never had any serious complaints until this one. We appreciate all constructive criticism, as that helps us do better. But this one was a bit over the top. In this case, we had a customer that we, or no one else for that matter could please. It happens and it is what it is. In hindsight, we should have figured that out and should not have rented to them. We will be more selective in the future. Since we have never really encountered this before, the behavior took us off guard. Trains do run by the river, as that is the way the West was settled. Most of our guests find this to be a very neat and special thing. Our power system was just upgraded and is state of the art with no limitations. Even though the Lodge is in a wilderness setting, the power system is just like home. As far as the rooms, there a 3 levels to the lodge. Upstairs is a big rooms with 4 beds and in the loft area upstairs there is abig queen bed and two single bunks. Upstairs can sleep 10 if need be, we suggest 6-8 to be comfortable. The main level has 3 separate bedrooms all with large beds-a king, California King and a queen bed. The downstairs has two seperate bedrooms with double beds and an additional custom made log futon. There are 6 seperate bedrooms where the doors are shut and you are private and the big one of those can sleep 4-6. There are bathrooms on all three levels. We encourage really no more that 16 at the Clark Fork River Lodge at one time to be truly comfortable. We will gladly share references of many of our return guests-including phone numbers.

Perfect week at a truly great Montana river cabin

  • 5 of 5

My family and friends and I stayed at the Clark Fork River Lodge for a full week in August, 2014. We had a full house for most of the time and the lodge was large enough to accommodate all of us. It was beautifully situated on the Clark Fork. The walk down to the river needed to be navigated carefully, but nobody fell or injured themselves on it. Once on the river, there was ample space for fishing, floating, or just sitting back and enjoying the scenery. The girls in the group visited the Superior Rodeo on a Friday night and had a blast. The boys rafted down the Flathead and also had a great time. Both were pretty close and did not require too long of a drive. St. Regis is only about 10 minutes away and great for grabbing the essentials. I would absolutely recommend the Clark Fork River Lodge for those trying to getting away from it all who enjoy the outdoors.

Still cold in mid June

  • 5 of 5

Owner is extremely good to work with. This location is set up as an amazing hunting/fishing lodge. At this time would not recommend for families with small children , however owner is working to make improvements so it can be more family friendly. If you are looking to get away and spend quality time with your family this is the place for you. Great access to multiple rivers and Glacier National Park(2 hrs) - Plains was a really nice surprise. Great people, grocery store and church. Stang's in St Regis is a amazing store with the best people who go out of there way to help you enjoy the area. Great fishing and wildlife- caught fish, saw Bald Eagles, Beavers, Elk and deer.

Also found out the Montana Railway is the #1 train watching destination according to a train magazine my step father receives which was very cool as the trains are a short walk from the property and run throughout the area.

Lastly be aware even in middle of June the highs can only reach into the 50's and the lows into the lower 40's/upper 30's . Just make sure you check before you go so you have the correct clothing.
