ABOUT THE OWNERS:

We are Kate and Norbert, a British/Canadian couple who, with our two kids, have recently bought Villa Caracol having fallen in love with the Riviera Maya. Villa Caracol is perfect for us and we hope it is for you too. It is away from the high tempo of typical tourist resorts but within easy access of all amenities. It offers the perfect base for exploration of Mexican and Yucatán culture, the glorious natural features of mangroves, cenotes and beach, and the relaxation of a beach holiday.

THINGS TO DO

Villa Caracol

Relax at Villa Caracol; in the pools, on the roof-terrace, on the beaches at Villa Caracol or along the coast, both north and south within a five minutes walk. Have quiet time inside with TV, DVDs, internet and reading.

Puerto Morelos

The nearest village is Puerto Morelos, a charming fishing village which has been escaped the ravages of construction and tourism. Previously the centre for the production of gum for the US chewing gum market cultivated from the chicle, Puerto Morelos is now better know for having the second largest coral reef. This is protected by the National Marine Park and local commitment to preservation of the environment which has kept development of the area to a minimum. The original lighthouse leans askew since Hurricane Beulah in 1966.

Puerto Morelos has numerous restaurants, bars and stores. The fishing boats are moored along the seafront and local fishermen bring their catch to the pier

Take a course in Mexican Cooking and join in yoga on the beach at 8.15 each morning. There are many yoga centres in Puerto Morelos.

Have a massage on the beach or make an appointment for the masseuse to come to your holiday home.

There is a variety of shops in and around the town square. Souvenir items, jewellery, and clothing are all available. The handicraft market shows and sells regional folk art, clothing, and crafts. View hammocks being made at one family’s craft booth.

Alma Libre Libros –the largest English-language bookstore on the coast holds thousands of English language books and is useful for guide books. Trade in your used books for credit. Open October – April.

Snorkelling – See the fantastic coral refs just offshore from Puerto Morelos. Hire a boat and guide from the various businesses in Puerto Morelos.

Diving – Explore the world’s second largest reef. Hire a boat and guide from the village of Puerto Morelos and float above the glorious corals, fish, sting rays and turtles.

Fishing – The fishing boats can pick you up form Villa Caracol. and take you for a few hours of deep sea fishing. You can catch barracuda, grouper, and billfish. Cook your catch at home in the evening.

Croco-Cun Zoo – At the touring from Highway 307 to Villa Caracol is the Croco-Cun Zoo with a collection of crocodiles and other indigenous animals . Offers immensely informative tours (available in English) and opportunities to hold baby crocs and feed the deer.

We entered the warm and welcoming home and saw the brilliant blue of the ocean just yards away

  • 5 of 5

Leo greeted us upon arrival, and was always accessible and helpful throughout our stay.

The soft and gentle sound of the ocean could be heard throughout. Each of the four bedrooms has an oceanview, all are roomy, and each has a tiled full bathroom. We would gather on the rooftop for cards, cocktails, or just sink into the jacuzzi and bring the night in.

There were 7 of us, ranging from 20's to 70's, and always had space for privacy or partying.

The large kitchen was fully furnished. The home was immaculate, and Leo had the beach and lounge chairs cleaned and ready each morning. We rented 2 cars, and went into Puerto Morelos almost daily, in addition to exploring many other areas.

Thank you for being so accommodating, answering our many questions prior to booking. We would highly recommend this beautiful home to anyone.

Beautiful house with amazing view

  • 5 of 5

This house is absolutely gorgeous. The views are even better. All of the reviews are 100% accurate. Leo was there to greet us and extremely friendly and helpful. We arrived a little later than expected and he was still there to greet us. There was welcomed food when we arrive which came in handy since we have no idea where we were going and it was late at night, so we didn’t stop for food. Like the other reviews said it is very hard to find the first time you get there. There is not a long walkable beach, but that didn’t matter to us, certainly was not a necessity for us to not love the place. We rented a car and visited Playa de Carmen, Tulum and Cobá. We never felt unsafe. The beds were definitely extremely firm but 6 of 7 of us had zero issues sleeping on them. Waves crashing into the sea wall all night was the perfect white noise to go to bed. Fans in all the bedrooms were nice to have. I honestly can’t say enough about how much we loved the house and the view. We all felt like we were in paradise. Definitely the nicest place I have ever been and I hope to come back in the future. I will always look for availability on this house if I come back to this area in Mexico!!! Thank you for a great stay!

An ideal vacation spot.

Beautiful House, No Beach

  • 3 of 5

The house was so beautiful and comfortable, we were very pleased with the accommodations. Leo the groundskeeper was absolutely lovely and super helpful. However, there are a number of pretty problematic characteristics of the property that were somehow never mentioned in any review.

1. Remote Entrance - There are many beautiful homes along the Riviera Maya that require driving down unpaved roads. This home is situated in a very remote area that required a 7 minute drive on an unpaved single-car jungle road. It was not the worst thing ever, but it was definitely daunting to drive on at night and made coming and going feel very overwhelming.

2. Extremely Hard Beds - The beds in each room are set atop a concrete block. The mattresses themselves are super hard. The combination is really quite uncomfortable. An investment in a 2-3 inch thick memory foam topper would go a long way. It was not a comfortable bed to sleep in and definitely detracted from our relaxation.

3. No Beach - This is really the most egregious issue with this home. There is straight up no beach. Directly outside the home is a sandy area on top of a sea wall. So, that's not a beach. To the right of the property is a very narrow sandy area that is not accessible, so that's not a beach. And then to the left of the property is about a 200 yard "beach" area that is private property. So... there was no beach for us to walk along. You can't go out for a morning stroll along the beach. You can't walk in either direction of the property. The sun goes behind the house around 1pm, leaving the pool shaded all afternoon - no beach to go out onto to get more sun. I am really shocked that this was not even mentioned by any of the many reviews I read ahead of time. We were extremely disappointed by this and frustrated with the restricted area in the back.

All in all, we were pleased with the house itself, but the location is far from ideal.

Beautiful property and very well maintained.

  • 5 of 5

Little hard to get to the first time. Seems best to tell taxi to go to hotel tourkesa off of punta caracol road and then continue past hotel down very narrow road. it was very easy to get to a variety of places from the villa. Something to do for everyone in the area from puerto morelos to playa del carmen. We usually took the back road way into puerto morelos except when going for groceries. The town is not very commercialized and that was fun. The villa itself was spacious and the bedrooms and balconies afforded alone time when needed. The beach is pretty narrow especially at high tide but we swam in the pools and saved our beach walking for in town. The views are spectacular from every room and there are plenty of beach loungers. Leo the caretaker was there every day if we needed anything.

Overall it was a nice relaxing stay.

Close to Villa Caracol

Villa Caracol is an ideal base for further exploration.

From the highway to the coast, you will travel though peaceful mangroves full of herons and white ibises. At the coast, watch the pelicans flying overhead and diving for fish.

A kilometre south of the turning to Puerto Morelos is the Yaax Che-Jardin Botanico Dr Alfredo Barrera for native Yucatán plant life, spider monkeys and birds. Labels are in English, Spanish, and Latin. There is also a nursery, orchid garden, a reproduction of a chiclero, a Mayan house, and an archaeological site. A nature walk through the mangroves makes for excellent bird watching and occasional monkey sightings. A tree-house lookout also provides an sensational view.

Further south, take the Ruta de los Cenotes, though an orange archway, inland to Central Vallarta. Along the way are many cenotes, limestone sinkholes, some developed for visitors and other still hidden and unused. The Mayans considered cenotes to be scared gateways to the underworld. These are both underground and open. Swim, snorkel and scuba dive in them either as part of a tour or independently. Many of the cenotes have been developed with zip wires, All Terrain Vehicles and jumping boards. There is a charge for these. See Boca del Puma at the 16 km mark on the road to Central Vallarta but there are others.

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen – Located just 25 minutes south of Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen is definitely worth visiting. Its main street, 5th Avenue, is teeming with shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Playa is also home to beautiful beaches and the ferry to reach Cozumel. At least plan on spending one afternoon enjoying the town and having dinner at one of its great restaurants.

Cancun

Villa Caracol is located within easy distance of Cancun airport, a 20 – 30 minute drive and just beyond that is Cancun centro itself.

Cinepolis VIP has large leather recliners, waiters, and restaurants. Most movies are in English with Spanish subtitles. Yak is the finest Bingo you’ll ever play. As numbers are called they light up on giant number boards (convenient for those who are not familiar with Spanish numbers) and every round has several winners. You can also bet on horse and greyhound racing upstairs in the sports bar.

Golf – Whether you brought your clubs along or want to rent some for the day, there are several fine courses available for public play.
