About the property

2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in a charming cottage with nearby gorgeous beaches.

This lovely cottage gives you access to the best island beaches-Lucy Vincent's, Squibnocket & Menemsha., all 10-15 minutes drive. Come back to the outdoor shower & hammock.

Turnover dates are on Saturdays and are available with ferry ticket, which we have purchased and which are transferable once you reserve with us!

Dates for 2018:

Aug. 4-11

Aug 11-18

Please Note: Since we purchase the ferry tickets in advance, these dates can not be changed.

This traditional Cape-style home can be your perfect secluded getaway, tucked in the woods.

Drive 5 miles to our wonderful Chilmark beaches--then eat lobster and watch the sunset over the ocean at Menemsha. Come back to our outdoor shower and relax in the hammock Or you can cook dinner on the deck with the Weber propane grill and eat outdoors while you watch the birds and the sunset. .

Downstairs, the kitchen windows look out on the sunset, you can open the curtains in the bedroom if you like the sunrise. Downstairs there's a bedroom, full bathroom, and a charming living/dining room with a wide board floor and large fireplace. The newly remodeled upstairs includes a bedroom, sleeping loft, and a delightful bathroom with its sink in a dormer window.

Chilmark is considered the most desirable town on the island because of its glorious beaches, restricted to the use of town residents and guests. It also has a wonderful Community Center, which provides camps and activities for kids as well as movies and other activities for adults. In near-by Menemsha, you'll find fish caught the same day that you can have cooked to order or bring back to make on the grill. Great restaurants include Home Port, the Chilmark Tavern, and State Road Restaurant. Be sure to stop at Chilmark Chocolates for mouthwatering treats!

This part of the island, called 'Up Island,' is known for its beauty, its great beaches, and its seclusion. If you like uncrowded beaches and enjoy seeing vast numbers of stars at night rather than lights, this is the place you're looking for!

Our house is on a dirt road which is well maintained but can get bumpy, especially after storms. We do not recommend cars that have especially low clearance.

Tennis courts are available in the neighborhood for a small extra charge.

Check-in time is 3:00 PM Saturday and check-out time is 10:00 AM Saturday. This is essential in order to have time for the house to be cleaned before each guest arrives!

About Jane Katch

Our family built this house 40 years ago and lived in it year-round. We moved in full time two yearsago, but will be renting it for the month of August, when we travel and visit our grown children. We are both retired teachers and work part time in the education field. Jane is a writer and speaks at conferences for early childhood educators. Jed teaches math for children who are both needing extra help and who want extra challenge. We are happy to be able to share our love of our 'Up Island' home with others who will enjoy being in a quiet part of the island where the deer, birds, and trails for walking abound, along with access to Chilmark's pristine beaches.

Jane Katch purchased this cottage in 1972

Why Jane Katch chose Chilmark

Jane's family first came to the Vineyard in the '50's by bicycle and stayed at the Youth Hostel. Her father had ordered two of the first bicycle child seats anyone had ever seen--people would stop and stare as they biked by!

Her parents bought this property and built the house in 1970 and lived here year round. Now we are following in that tradition--we love the quiet winter here as well as the beautiful summer!

What makes this cottage unique

Walking into our living/dining room space, with its big fireplace, with its mantle that my parents built from driftwood they found on the beach, guests say, 'This is so warm and comfortable!' This year we completely renovated the upstairs, which now has a bedroom area and an open sleeping loft (the area does not have doors but there is a more private bedroom space and a more open loft space.) It also has a charming bathroom, with the sink in the dormer window opposite a shower and the toilet under the eaves!

The kitchen and bathroom downstairs will be our next big renovation project-- they are not yet updated but are clean and comfortable.

Wonderful, private cottage

  • 5 of 5

Great location! Private cottage within a 1/2 hour drive of all the best Martha's Vineyard has to offer. The house was so charming, perfect for our family. The upstairs sleeping area was very spacious. Great to have access to a full kitchen. Loved being able to obtain a private beach pass.

comfortable , rustic home with AC

  • 5 of 5

we had a lovely week at this perfectly located home. a very easy property - has everything one needs. If you're looking for pristine or fussy this is not the place for you. But if you don't mind a rustic family home - that has AC!!- it's a great spot. Owners were lovely and easy to communicate with.

Quiet Escape in Chilmark

  • 5 of 5

Had a very nice, relaxing week at this house in Chilmark. Very quiet location and great for walking. Good outdoor table and spot to have outdoor meals. Access to Lucy Vincent beach only from Chilmark and this address allows you to get the sticker from the town hall to get there. Great outdoor shower as well. Owner very easy to communicate with and responds quickly to requests. Great base to explore the island and get a good night's sleep.

Responsive owner, peace and quiet, and access to one of the best beaches in the world!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great week on the Vineyard at this house. Chilmark is the place to be on the Vineyard as you must be an in-town property owner or renter to gain access to Lucy Vincent. If you aren't aware of the place, Google it right now! Aside from that, Up-Island has a different feel than the more populated side- a lot more relaxed and understated.

This house is set in the middle of the woods and could easily be mistaken for a Vermont cottage over one just over 10 minutes from several amazing beaches. It is an old-fashioned country type of cottage so if you're looking for high-end, this probably isn't your place. However, it is big, clean, and the owners provide most of what you need for your family to have a great time on the island. My wife spent several evenings reading in the hammock in the front yard while I grilled some of the best fish we've ever eaten that we grabbed from Menemsha that night.

Great Rock Bight was also just 10 minutes away and was a fantastic place to take the dog every morning before 10am- just a 1/2 mile hike in to a nice beach on the Sound.

We had an issue with my dog putting a hole in the side screen and the owner responded quickly and reasonably with minimal headaches on my side. She was very helpful all along the way before and after our stay. We left a few items and gladly shipped them back to us once we figured it out.

All in all, we'll be returning to Chilmark and would be happy to stay at the same house again.
