Exclusive Beach Community Minutes from Cedar Point Park/ Sports Center, Kalahari
Welcome to the hibiscus House.
The basic description of our offering is a quaint cottage in a lake side community on the shores of Lake Erie. We have a community private beach access with a walkable high bank perch just a 2 min slow walk from the front door. Located 15 minutes from Cedar Point, Kalahari, and even closer to Cedar Point Sports Center. There are two bedrooms that are equipped to be comfortable for sleeping and an adequate living space for hanging out. There is a fully functional and stocked kitchen with amenities that will save you time and money. A front patio perfect for grilling a meal, reading a book, or enjoying a game with family. If you packed light, no worries there is an in house laundry facility.
That would pretty much sum it up. If you are just looking for another place along the lake with reasonable access to the local attractions, the Hibiscus house is indeed that. But if you are looking for a more in depth and personal experience, then please read on.
The Hibiscus house is somewhere between accidental and a planned that came sooner than expected endeavor. I (Dwight) was caring for my father who had dementia when it became evident that the house had some issues that needed addressed immediately. What started as a plan to just address those issues became an opportunity to just fix it right the first time. Dad had been pretty successful before his diagnosis and there was a kitty for us to do the remodel right. Both Kristy and I are travelers and have stayed in vacation homes. We imagined all the good and bad experiences we have had and thought about what would make the ideal space. Location was already a given, so we needed only to make sure we did a good job of setting up the house itself.
The first and most obvious is that I am a coffee snob and Kristy a tea drinker. So we set up a cart with the multiple options and ways to enjoy both. I am a sailor, I have spent many hours in small spaces designed to feel “big”. So designing a space that fits the bill was as easy as a Sunday sail. Adding a laundry facility for busy week stays with lots of beach time was clearly going to have to be part of that design.
Beyond the physical aspects of the Hibiscus House, there is the intended character. I come from a large extended family and value that very much. Dad and Mom would take me and my 2 siblings on family vacations to the East Coast every year. In my adulthood I cherish and get emotional when I think back on our time. I wanted the space to be inviting to family time. The bedrooms are small. We wanted people to congregate in the main room, sit at the counter while dinner is made or breakfast is served. The game selection is designed to invite families and friends to “play”. I have even included a “Raspberry Pi” game emulator with classics many of you will recognize from your childhood. I can tell you that every minute on a vacation is a chance to make a memory that lasts a lifetime. Something they will talk about decades later.

The home was super clean, well stocked, and the host went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. It made our last-minute mother-daughter birthday trip extra special. Would absolutely stay again!
Thank you for taking the time to leave a five star review. It is our goal to provide a space that enables families to make the most of their stay with us.
The owners have literally thought of everything you could possibly want or need during your stay. They are very good hosts. Our family had a great stay.

The Hibiscus House is as described, super clean, and the best stocked place we have stayed in: they have everything you need! It's close to the lake, and the owners go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. We highly recommend!
We highly recommend and very much enjoyed our stay. It was super clean and close to the beach. The coffee bar was a nice touch, as well as the cottage is stocked with everything you would need. Loved the beautiful beach and benches at the bluff to just sit and relax watching the waves.

Lannea, thank you for the lovely, five-star review. We are so pleased that your family enjoyed your stay at Hibiscus House and all that Mitiwanga has to offer. It would be the highest compliment to host your family again.
Dwight and Kristi are wonderful hosts and make your visit accommodating and welcoming. When asked if we could check in early to help us make our plans work with the times we'd be staying, they allowed us to check in the night before our stay with no extra charge. This we so sweet and considerate. The house was stocked with coffee and tea. We are coffee lovers so this was wonderful! The community is beautiful! They had everything we could need to make our trips to the beach simple and enjoyable. The beauty of the sunset from the beach was stunning! My husband and I will likely stay again because this place is perfect for a relaxing couple getaway. The house is also so perfect, especially for a family with small kiddos!
Dwight was so nice, responsive, personable, and proud of his cute little property! The property was cute, clean, comfortable, well stocked, the grounds were well kept and pretty! I would highly recommend this property!
I was so impressed with every little touch and nicety- the entire place was thoughtful and purposeful. We have stayed at MANY VRBO’s and this was definitely in the top 5!!
We really enjoyed our stay: it had a comfortable beds, great little kitchen, and It was very clean. It had all the little amenities you would need while you stayed. We also enjoyed the porch area in the evenings. It is a wonderful private community and located a short walk to the very nice beach. I love the area and will want to return next year!
Loved our stay here this past weekend! Loved being able to walk a short distance to see the lake and enjoy the view. Great host and property!!! Bringing the family back for sure! We loved it ❤

Thanks for taking the time to post a review. We look forward to hosting your family again.
We had a very short stay at the Hibiscus House but enjoyed our time here. The home was very accomodating with many things we might need for a day at the beach, books and games indoors, and the best water/coffee/tea setup I've seen anywhere :)
We hope to come back someday for a longer trip!

Thank you for the kind words and detailed five-star review. We're sorry that the rains cut your trip short this time around. Hopefully next time Mother Nature will provide ample sunshine so your family can get the full North Shore experience.
The Hibiscus House met all of our families needs and more! We enjoyed the indoor and outdoor space. The beach is beautiful and very short walk away. The hosts were wonderful and available during our stay. We enjoyed everything from riding bikes to collecting sea glass to relaxing on the patio. We would definitely return!
Very nice and clean little house. Great location! Would have rather been given the door code versus having to announce our arrival and meet the owner but that’s just our preference and what we are used to.

This is our second non five-star review in the three seasons since re-launching this property, formerly operated by my father before he succumbed to dementia. We hold the mantra "we will learn from any negative marks we receive". However, like our first non five-star review, there is nothing more we could have done. This is a passion project, carrying on a tradition started by my father. I could have opted to rent this property out long-term and made more income with less effort. Myself and my fiancé both work solid, full-time jobs and enjoy the rewarding experience of hosting our guests.
It is clearly noted in our property description and in our welcome guide that we attempt to meet all of our guests. There are two reasons for this approach. First, during our first two seasons we did not meet guests and found that a notable portion were not forthcoming regarding their pets. We had guests bringing in undeclared pets or pets that exceeded the size limit of our house rule. Guests also misrepresented the number of guests in their party. Meeting guests affords us the opportunity to ensure that these factors are verified. Secondly, we are interested in meeting new people, engaging with our guests, even on a limited basis, helps us get to know them and hone in on how we can best enable them to make life long memories during their stay. Many of our reviews mention that we are wonderful hosts. Several of our guests have enjoyed their experience so much they returned for additional stays. IF you want the hotel room experience, Hibiscus House may not be the place for you. We are sorry that arriving at the time this guest provided and spending five minutes with me was a discomfort, but we have to protect ourselves. Hibiscus House is a very well kept gem, we have put so much of our own time and resources into it. We will make sure each guest finds it as if they were one of the first.
It is true that guests have things that they prefer. We do our best to represent our property accurately and completely. As hosts, there are things that we prefer. For example, we prefer to not find dog feces and urine under the beds in both bedrooms. We prefer to not come in and have to identify the source of a variety of foul odors, like pebbles of poo under our bunks or diarrhea splats under the queen bed or used feminine hygiene products in an un-lined wastebasket, which was lined when the property was turned over. We prefer to find that the dishes that were put away to actually have been cleaned. We prefer canine guests to not bark the entire time their humans are not present. This is a duplex with a very patient 30+ year long tenant in the other unit.
We granted this guest an exception to our single dog under 20# house rule. When I met them, the husband chose to remain in the car with their second dog, giving reason to suspect that the other dog was bigger than represented. Our reward for bending our rule was a disgusting mess and a four-star review.
Cottage was just as described in a lovely, quaint beach community. Many thoughtful amenities have been provided for guests. Excellent communication from Dwight. Would definitely book again.

You guys! Simply the greatest compliment a host could receive is a return guest. It is appreciated when kind words are offered, but when they are complimented with a return visit, we are seriously humbled. We don't know if we are doing things right. We try to be guided with "what would we want if we were guests" and "What can we do to add value to the stay that can't be had via a normal hotel experience. "
I hope you have a great summer. See you again soon. Calm winds and following seas to you and yours.
Like our first visit, everything was clean, comfortable, and well stocked (which was wonderful since I forgot to pack coffee). Dwight was in touch to ensure that our trip was fun, even suggesting places of interest to visit. We hope to return soon.

Thanks for the five star review and rave recommendation! It was a pleasure to host your family of 4+2. The highest compliment would be for you guys to stay with us again. We look forward to it!
We stayed 6 days at this lovely place, and it exceeded our expectations.
The location is perfect, very close to the beach and relaxing atmosphere. It is 20 min away from Sandusky/Cedar Point.
The beach house worked out great for the four of us and it has everything you possible can need on a vacation.
The owners are very helpful, fast response on the questions we had, and they had prepared the place perfect to make our visit comfortable. Lots of things you can borrow to use at the beach.
Can not go wrong with this place!! We would love to come back in the future
My daughters and I had a lovely stay. Owners provided lots of extras- wonderful coffee bar, hot and cold water dispenser, extra toiletries if needed, first aid, beach toys, chairs, etc. The lake/beach access is a two minute walk so it was easy to go back and forth. Gorgeous sunsets! A wonderful, peaceful neighborhood. Thank you for sharing :)

We will update this later.
Why they chose this property
Along with the location, we are happy to offer access to sporting equipment. From basketballs and tennis rackets for the local courts to fishing poles, kayaks, and sailing dinghy's. I am a skilled sailor willing to provide lessons for those who wish to engage in experiencing a challenging and fun new sport. In the future we at Offshore Breeze hope to have our own big boat to offer. Sunset cruises, island adventures, dinner sail to one of the riverside restaurants. Before having to dedicate my time to dad, I used to take enjoyment and pride in taking people who had little to no experience out to for a sunset sail. Most of them are still thankful year later.
So please, come and let us enable you to make lasting memories. Come for the local attractions, but stay with us for a unique and unforgettable experience that will inspire dreams and draw your family or friends group tighter together. Elevate your vacation to a true adventure.
What makes this property unique
Access to the private beach. Walking distance to two pubs. Options for sailing, diving (There is a dive shop about 20 minutes away. ) , and fishing adventures at discount rates. less than a half hour from a small boat Marina. We are still working out the details as this is new. There are 3 golf course near by. If you are a avid golfer there are some very unique and reputable ones for a small drive cost. Maumee Bay has once of the few Scottish Links style course in the area.
We are accepting dogs with responsible humans up to 20lbs for a small fee of $100. We too are dog parents and understand how much comfort (not to mention value) there is in traveling with our 4 legged companions.
So Please give us a chance to make more than a vacation, make a memory that you and your party will treasure for a lifetime. We have been guests many times, we know what we liked and didn't like. We are going to bring that wisdom to our guests.
